The in 1364 by king Casimir the Great founded Cracow Academy is the oldest Polish university and after Prague (1348), the second oldest in this part of Europe.
After the death of the king it had to temporarily cease operations. Only in the last decade of the 14th century acquired an agent of king Ladislaus Jagiello and queen Jadwiga (Hedwig), inter alia, from a foundation in the will of the Queen of Szczepan Pęcherz, the lord of Rzeszotary, a magnificent brick-built house in the former Jewish quarter at the intersection of today's Św Anny and Jagiellonian street.
This was the beginning of the Collegium Maius, the first seat of the in 1400 renewed University. In the following decades it had constantly to be enlarged and expanded as more and more students and professors moved to the young university. From the first extension phase (1440) stems the common chamber (Stuba Communis) with the characteristic bay in the Jagiellonian street. Once gathered here the professors for meal, today meetings and consultations take place here.
The continuous flowering of the university was the reason that other properties had to be purchased in the neighborhood. Great services rendered also the historian Jan Długosz, which south of the Collegium Maius bequeathed houses to the University. Paradoxically, was the question of expanding by two fires in 1562 and in 1492 settled, after which a thorough remodeling of the building was necessary anyway, whose effects we can admire till today.
In the years 1507-1509 master Marek rebuilt the hall and furnished the oldest part of the building at the corner with a stepped gable, which is characteristic for the Malopolska region (Lesser Poland) architecture of the era. Shortly thereafter was began on the south side with the construction of a Librarium, so the university library. This work went on until 1540. To the Librarium leads a richly ornated door, the Porta Aurea (Golden Gate). It has an L-shaped plan and is with an in Krakow rarely encountered net vault and a star-shaped reticulated vaulting with narrow brick ribs covered.
A result of the then conversion is also the courtyard, which is surrounded by a one-story archway, a work by stonemason January (1493). Special attention deserve the rare crystal vaults. Apart from the representative halls and the library were located in the converted Collegium Maius also Lektorien (rooms on the ground floor where the lectures were held), in the upper floors were housed apartments for professors.
The Academy attracted students from all over Europe to Krakow. Particularly proud one was about the high level in mathematics and astronomy. However, the rejection of the ideas of the Reformation in the 16th century led to a crisis of the university and to its gradual decline until the 18th century, of which also the buildings were not spared. The Collegium Maius to a large extent was abandoned, containing only the library. Luckily there was no place to which the books could be outsourced what probably saved the building. The library remained here until 1940, when it moved into its new headquarters in the Mickiewicz Avenue.
In the Collegium Maius now the Museum of the Jagiellonian University is located. A special attraction is the mechanical movement with a procession of moving figures daily at 9:00, 11:00, 13.00, 15.00 und 17.00 o'clock.
Among the many notable alumni of the University are Nicolaus Copernicus and Karol Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II.
