... of the matriarch!

'The elephant’s trunk, which is called a proboscis, contains 16 muscles. It’s very similar to that of their ancient ancestors, the mammoth and mastodon, with a large muscle on the top and sides of the trunk allowing elephants to raise it. There are also thousands of smaller muscle fascicles, or bundles of muscle fibers, that allow for finer movements of the trunk."

"Because they migrate for food according to the seasons, elephants need quite a lot of room to move around and find their food. Not having enough space is detrimental to elephants."

Musth is a completely natural phenomenon seen in mature bull elephants.

Generally characterised by the secretion of a hormone rich substance called temporin from the temporal gland (on either side of the elephant’s head) and a steady trickle of urine down the back legs of the elephant, musth involves a rise in the reproductive hormones in the elephant’s body. This causes the animal to feel more restless, energetic, aggressive or unpredictable – and generally irritable and oversensitive to sounds and movements. Musth is seen in healthy adult bull elephants.

... than just one day a year,

I have decided to make it a personal "Elephant Week 2019"

Elephants take such good care of each other,

so why couldn't we care for them

while we are the only reason for their declining numbers?

Thank you for visiting. Your comments and faves are much appreciated.

This is just how I wished to come across an African Elephant. Certainly unlike many seen in zoos it wasn't pretty but seemingly happy in its natural environment. That being said lone bull elephants are almost certainly outcasts from the herd. They will have failed to maintain that position of seniority within the breeding herd and a a result tend to live their lives alone.
