In September 1978, while the country was still accessible to tourists, I left with a small group for Afghanistan. At an altitude of 1900 m and far from any agglomeration, in a steep valley at the confluence of the rivers Hari-rud and Jam, I found myself in front of the splendid minaret of Jam. 65 meters high, it is entirely covered with a geometrical decoration in relief with a kufic inscription in turquoise tiles. It would have been built in 1194 by the great Ghurid sultan Ghiyas-od-din (1153-1203).

Since 2002, it is registered by UNESCO on the list of the world heritage in danger. Scientists have not had access to it since 2010.

In the late seventies I travelled through Afghanistan. This is a picture I took during that time, a slide. Just a few of those slides I changed in a digital photo.
