The Quran describes the oppressor or tyrant as "deaf, dumb and blind", which is essentially the spiritual reality of the tyrant. He cannot hear the cries of his victims; he cannot communicate with those he oppresses because he imperiously views them as representatives of a lower order of being than himself, and thus as mere commodities to be exploited or, even worse, as plagues to be cleansed; and he cannot see the harm he does. Aristotle (d. 322 BC) reminds us that all tyrants invariably surround themselves with sycophants because they cannot bear the truth. But the tyrant also needs these sycophants because he demands tacit approval of his beliefs and actions, and most of all he fears an honest and critical view of himself. The more the tyrant's power grows, the less he tolerates dissent. What is true of the tyrant is also true of the tyrannical nation. He demands that everyone agree with him and affirm his position because he cannot see, hear or speak to anyone but himself. He believes that his vision is clear, his understanding is unsurpassed, and his words, and only his words, are worthy of utterance or consideration. As human beings, only through others can we truly see ourselves, hear ourselves and talk to ourselves; but in his fixation on himself the tyrant is totally incapable of such reflection.

There were days when I thought I had full confidence in an affirmation. When the immensity of the universe surprises me among the mists, sitting alone, as a simple guest to be a spectator, ... a thought occurs: "I only hope to have the ability to discern who will be the person who will accompany my future and luck to share my desires. Goals that will not be approached by my perseverance in the wait, in any case I distrust in she.

i had a great night last might watching Afro Celt Soundsystem in Cardiff. Their music is infectious and so full of life and colour so I needed a photo to try and give that sense of fun and life affirming enthusiasm. After so much dancing everyone was Breathless, by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

“The mermaid is an archetypal image that represents a woman who is at ease in the great waters of life, the waters of emotion and sexuality. She shows us how to embrace our instinctive sexuality and sensuality so that we can affirm the essence of our feminine nature, the wisdom of our bodies, and the playfulness of our spirits. She symbolizes our connection with our deepest instinctive feelings, our wild and untamed animal nature that exists below the surface of outward personalities. She is able to respond to her mysterious sexual impulses without abandoning her more human, conscious side.
Which Way to Happy is by the Magic Numbers. It's often very hard to know which way will bring happiness. To me a beach visit always guarantees happiness , and wonderful memories. The ever changing light, clouds and tide mean every visit and every minute is different and life affirming.
When I wake up each morning I feel so privileged to be able to spend another day enjoying our beautiful world. So many people don't have that privilege.
“Sweetheart, darling, dearest,
it was funny to think that these endearments,
which used to sound exceedingly sentimental in movies and books,
now held great importance, simple but true verbal affirmations of how they felt for each other.
They were words only the heart could hear and understand,
words that could impart entire pentameter sonnets in their few, short syllables.”

Hi again everyone. I've decided to take a small break from flickr because I have some things to attend to before we start our trek through central Australia in September.
I'd particularly like to say thanks for all of your support and comments. No doubt I will do the occasional upload during this break but I won't be here on flickr anywhere near as much as I have been in the past. I'll be back online properly in September and I hope you'll come along and join me on our journey to Uluru, Alice Springs and Central Australia.
Just so nobody is worried by my absence, I'd just like to say that everything is going good for me at the moment and that is a big part of why I'm so short on time. Those of you who have been around for a long time know what I'm talking about and I'd particularly like to say a big THANK YOU to all of you who have been there to support me in the past. Your love and kindness has been a HUGE part of my getting better and I'd like to dedicate this photo and this song by Savage Garden particularly to you!
Who would have thought I would find such inspiration from the friends that I've found on flickr? I'm constantly amazed at all of my contacts' and regulars' talent, ability, empathy and kindness. You guys are an affirmation of everything that is wonderful about photography and flickr!
The town hall of Liège, nicknamed La Violette, is a building on the Place du Marché in Liège built in 1714.
It was in fact in the thirteenth century that the magistrates in charge of municipal administration, wishing to assert their independence with regard to the prince-bishop, chose to hold their meetings a bourgeois house on the Place du Marché, designated by its sign "La Violette".
La Violette was the place for the election of mayors and the publication of municipal regulations.
It is the first town hall, located not far from the princely palace and opposite the Perron, the proud symbol of Liège freedoms. Destroyed and rebuilt several times, it will however remain faithful to this privileged location.
It is indeed on August 14, 1714 that we finally see the laying of the first stone of the current town hall. D'Auberat, the official architect of Prince-Bishop Joseph-Clément of Bavaria, the engineer Sarta and the Dominican brother Colomban abandon the regional Gothic style of the old building for a classic construction with strict and rational lines, based on a U-shaped plan based on arched substructures. A bronze medal dated 1714 attributed to Gondolphe Duvivier commemorates this event: on the front side are the coat of arms of the prince-bishop and the two coats of arms of the mayors of the year and on the other side, the Violet surmounted by the statue of Saint Lambert, patron saint of the city, followed by a long text.

In the background appears the beautiful Nabateaen Amphitheater carved right from the mountain rock. It's a little different from the other ancient theaters in Jordan because of its (grand) setting and the pinkish-red color. It was surrounded by many small Nabataean tombs, affirming that it was a part of Petra. The panoramic views of this place from the trek to the Treasury viewpoint are also spectacular.

Home, Saint-Hippolyte, Quebec.
As I said before, I had a lot of unexpected work on the new house, mainly outside, so I left my camera on the tripod not far from where I was working or on the back terrace, and when I saw something interesting, click… click… click, since the new technology of the new cameras allows shots up to 30 and even more per second!!! Lots of sorting of photos after a session OUF… In August, the young came out of the nest, and it is fascinating to watch them when they beg for food from the parents. In the case of the American Goldfinch, it seems to be the father who does most of the work, and this would be perfectly normal since the female has done a lot. However, I cannot affirm this theory since this is the first time I have had the opportunity to observe this ritual of feeding the chicks. Here, the juveniles are almost completely independent, but, like all teenagers in this world, they like to take advantage of the generosity of their parents, who must, at a certain point, abandon them so that they can fly on their own. One of some 500 photos taken during this session, more to come.
°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°
American social media users woke up this morning to find that they no longer had access to TikTok after the much-anticipated ban was implemented.
Multiple U.S. agencies and public officials have stated that TikTok poses a national security risk to the United States because, at any time, the Chinese government could compel the company to hand over a huge trove of U.S. citizens’ data.
TikTok says it has “invested billions of dollars to keep U.S. data safe and our platform free from outside influence and manipulation.” While adding that the ban will “devastate seven million businesses and silence 170 million Americans.”

Genesis 2:17 King James Version (KJV)
17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of abandoned homes strewn throughout the countryside in Alberta. They did not fall out of the sky, but rather, were thoughtfully placed with the intentions of building a life within the four walls and a roof - a very long time ago.
When I come across these homesteads, I just have to stop. I don’t know why I am drawn to these old relics. Fossils of the past. It is as if can hear their heart beat in the solitude of the countryside.
Who lived here? What kind of life did they have? Did they conquer their hardships or challenges? It is without a doubt that the occupants encountered insurmountable struggles.
I try to imagine the essence of the house. Were there moments of joy and contentment despite the harshness and difficulties of the environment? I find it incredulous that it still stands even though it has been ravaged by time.
My imagination begins to percolate.
I want to hear the happy, contagious squeals of children giggling as they raced to the warmth of their beds at night; the sound of Mother humming as she lovingly brushed her daughter’s hair by the fire, or Father whistling with an air of fulfillment at a satisfying day of work that had been done and in anticipation of the hot meal waiting for him as he walked in, through the door. Goals, dreams and aspirations were quietly shared in the secrecy of night. Stolen kisses and affirmations of love and commitment were whispered as the children slept.
I wonder if this house had been enough for them? Why did they leave? What were their parting thoughts as they turned the key for that one last time? So many questions. No answers…
I snap a photo of the old gal.
I start driving down the lonely road but take one last look in my rearview mirror. I see a house surrounded by mass plantings of flowers, a thriving garden, chickens milling about and a clothesline that has a congregation of well worn clothes that are being gently seduced by an unusually warm summer breeze. The children are playing Kick-the-can out in the fields.
The joy of their laughter is a welcome sound to their Mother and Father who are sitting together on the porch sipping lemonade and enjoying a respite from the monotony of chores. No words pass between them. They bask in the silence of their mutual contentment.
I see a house that was once brimming with life and love. It stands proud and tenacious as a testament to those who happen to pass by on this lonely country road and those who have the ears to hear the echoes of laughter wafting in the wind, proclaiming that this house was more than four walls and a roof - it was a home…
Completely unlike the fleur-de-lys, the lush dark red lily in the silver field of the coat of arms is a proud emblem of beautiful Florence. The presence of such a lily in the coat of arms explains the magnificent motto: «A flower in full bloom - so flourishes the blooming Florence.»
Anatole France used the image of the "red lily" as the title of his novel. "Red Lily" is a novel about love in the world of politicians and prudent businessmen.
The play based on this novel made a huge impression on the young Marcel Proust. The red lily, which gave the title of the novel, is not just a flower, but a symbol of Florence, where the love of the social beauty Countess Marten-Bellemm and the talented sculptor Jacques Deschartre blossomed.

Sometimes the reinforcement of gracious qualities and love can be a good thing.
So I decided to start an Album on Flickr doing just that.
I like to take shots of the things I have collected over the years that are sharing their presence with me in my home.
Some of my Grail shots have this quality, but often the poem ends up being longer than an affirmation, to me they end up more like a prayer. You can see the Album that contains those works in my Flickr account as well.
But in a sense this is the same principle, as the things I have collected over the years often have a sacred presence or meaning, so I thought I would start to share them here.
On rainy days or when I am not in a writing mood, it is good to still keep working, using the camera in this way, and it is not only enjoyable, it is an opportunity to appreciate these wonderful sacred items and sculptures all over again, and listen to what they have to say.
This Garuda is a modern piece, but the history, energy and protective instinct is the same as from his first incarnation.
This shot is from where he resides, in my glass cabinet, where I keep many other precious things..

EVERY DAY
You can leave me in the light
And not worry about finding me
You must surely know
That I will always seek you out
When you feel your sanity
Might be in doubt
When your heart feels sore
And you can’t take anymore
When you hide in dark corners
Shunning the current conversation
All so trite and full of spite
Come and find me
Where you left me
Just look for the light
Because that is me calling you
Every moment of the day
From the light
Look it’s alright
From the light
I love you

Thank you to my Friends and Followers,
an Affirmation for Every Day.
Dear friends and followers, and those who have viewed and faved recently on my last batch of work. I have been thinking of you all and wanting to get back to you before now.
The past few days I have been unwell however, but recovering now.
So this was just a little offering to keep you all going until I can cast my eyes over your lovely work and thank you all for supporting me.
Grail Keepers do not forget their friends. Grail Keepers are people who do not forget and have loyalty as their middle name.
Behind the scenes I have been working, thinking. Seems to me we need beauty and decency back in this world. We need the sort of values that anybody, regardless of who or what they are, or what faith they follow, can have.
A Grail Keeper in my mind is someone who will help in this way, even if its only in small ways, it all adds up to something bigger.
Martin Luther King was a Grail Keeper. John Lennon was a Grail Keeper. Mother Teresa was a Grail Keeper. Alexei Navalny was a Grail Keeper. There are so many, the list could go on.
These are courageous well known examples. But there are also Grail Keepers who work diligently in their own communities. There are Grail Keepers who perform small acts of kindness every day.
I want to start to expand on this idea, and the work I do I hope will bring some light into this dark uncertain world of ours. It doesn’t have to be this way, and Grail Keepers even if its only in a simple, small way, need to find their courage and continue to hold up a light.
This work is from Glynde Church, in Sussex in the UK. I take my Grails out into the area I know and have lived in all my life. With them I seek to find a connection to the spiritual world that will heal and enlighten.
Short of having you there with me, the least I can do is share my work in images and words.
And as always, if you would like to see more of my work, have a look at my website at:
March 13th, 2024. Dear Friends...I am still catching up...if I haven't got to you yet, I will.
Meanwhile...The Grail is obsessing me again, when does it not you might ask. Fair point. I really think there is going to be more written as I think upon it. I mean, I have thought about it pretty much all my life, but I think it has a poignant relevance now. I can see some Blogs might get written in the future, especially on the Grail Keeper theme. Modern Grail Keepers are also our future.
Think of any? Might be somebody in your local community.
Like the Post Master in mine, who helped me sort out the right postage to get my new Driving License there and back safely. He got it in the right envelopes and everything for me.
My notes are expanding. But then so is love for the Grail.
All my love everybody, Shell x

I may not be the pretty skinny girl who has her picture gawked at, but I am me. I am a human being, and I am happy with myself. I have curves, and I don't wear a size 2. Call me what you want, I know I truly am.
I believe the sun should never set upon an argument
I believe we place our happiness in other people's hands
I believe that junk food tastes so good because it's bad for you
I believe your parents did the best job they knew how to do
I believe that beauty magazines promote low self esteem
I believe I'm loved when I'm completely by myself alone
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe you can't control or choose your sexuality
I believe that trust is more important than monogamy
I believe your most attractive features are your heart and soul
I believe that family is worth more than money or gold
I believe the struggle for financial freedom is unfair
I believe the only ones who disagree are millionaires
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
I believe forgiveness is the key to your own happiness
I believe that wedded bliss negates the need to be undressed

I believe in love surviving death into eternity
I believe in Karma what you give is what you get returned
I believe you can't appreciate real love 'til you've been burned
I believe the grass is no more greener on the other side
I believe you don't know what you've got until you say goodbye
Until you say goodbye
-Savage Garden "Affirmation"
Ours is a rich, decadent, spiritually exhausted civilization. The sickness of the modern West comes from our having cut ourselves off from the source of enchantment. That is the belief that all life has ultimate, transcendent meaning, given to us by God, and that we can live in palpable, participatory relationship to that meaning. Recovering this belief, and making it not just a proposition we affirm in our heads but an embodied way of life, is the most urgent task facing us today.
-Rod Dreher, Living in wonder : finding mystery and meaning in a secular age / Rod Dreher.
