Lapwings grow a new set of feathers in the autumn and the upperpart feathers have a narrow buffy tip that wears off by spring leaving the glossy breeding plumage. Nearly all of my Lapwing photographs were taken on the breeding grounds in the hills so I think this is the first adult in its buffy-scaled winter plumage that I have uploaded. Also in winter they tend to live in skittish flocks so they are not as easy to photograph close. Young Lapwings also have more extensive buffy edges but the glossy colours and long crest show this to be an adult. Here's a young bird for comparison with a short crest: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/36052348383/in/photolist Adult male Lapwings have black all over the front of the face that join up with the breast band so this white faced bird is a female. Here's an adult male: www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/36953431185/in/photolist I photographed this winter-plumaged female at Martin Mere in lowland Lancashire where they are common in winter. They usually vacate the hills in winter but their noisy return in March (sometimes earlier) is one of the first signs of spring.

Grey heron (Ardea cinerea)

Meaning behind the name:

Ardea = "Bow, rainbow," A Roman legend says a town called Adera (capital of Rutuli) was raised to the ground and from the ashes rose a pale bird uttering mournful cries.

Cinerea = "Ash-grey, ash coloured" The connection here to the herons colour and the legend from Ardea.

In 1300, the name for heron was spelt "hey-roun" and "heyruns" by 1302. The current name comes from French using forms such as "heron, heiron and hairon" starting in 1381 (if I understood my references correctly - believe me, the name origin is far more complex than this simplified version I've done for you) which became more established by 1667.

Fiercely predatory habits of their larvae, which in many species dig pits to trap passing ants or other prey. The adult insects are less well known, as they mostly fly at dusk or after dark, and may be mistakenly identified as dragonflies or damselflies; they are sometimes known as antlion lacewings, and in North America, the larvae are sometimes referred to as doodlebugs because of the strange marks they leave in the sand.

An adult male American Oystercatcher using his beak to widen the already cracked clam shell brought out by a smaller gull who could not raise it high enough in the air with flight and drop it to successfully crack it open. No worries, the Oystercatcher had no issues getting inside with his long beak.

I know, I know, ya'll are sick of me posting this bird! Last one for this Creation adventure. This is the adult stage with the bright red frontal shield. with a golden tip! There's tons of these birds in Florida! Probably equal to the numbers of American Coots! I'm just saying if I only had a dollar for every Coot ...

Featured on The Sunshine Group Blog for the week of March 26, 2012.

Widespread and often fairly common in the Andes, mainly in fairly open habitats from scrub to bogs and rocky slopes. Often relatively conspicuous, running on the ground with tail strongly cocked and often dipped, or singing from a prominent rock. Plumage rather plain overall with brownish upperparts and dark-centered, bright rusty tail.

This shot was taken back in August, off the East coast of America.

A pretty unremarkable shot on the face of it, but this really marked an amazing & memorable moment for me.

This adult Male Humpback whale passed directly under our boat, before surfacing just a few yards away.

I'd been watching Shearwaters bobbing on the surface, when I was suddenly aware of this huge shape looming out from beneath the boat, with those fabulous white pectorals stretching out like the wings of an aircraft.

You can just make out the bubbles beginning to escape from his blow-hole & mouth here, just before he broke the surface & blasted a jet of spray high up into the air.

The sight, sound & the feel of the spray on my face was just incredible.

Adult Wood Storks preening along the boardwalk at Wakodahatchee Wetlands are a familiar sight that I have

photographed many times. Seeking to elevate this ordinary scene into a more visually captivating image, I framed the Wood Stork within the branches and leaves set against a brilliant blue sky. The Wood Stork was remarkably cooperative, tilting its head while preening at an angle that mirrored the line of a nearby branch.
