Adinkra (ah-DEEN-krah) cloth is a hand-printed fabric made in Ghana. Developed by the Ashanti people, Adinkra cloths were traditionally made for royalty to wear at religious ceremonies. Through the years, people have also decorated the cloths to tell a story or to express their thoughts or feelings.

Adinkra cloth is stamped and patterned with traditional Ashanti symbols. Each symbol has its own meaning. People in Ghana decorate the cloth by using a black dye made of bark. This dye is called Adinkera aduru, and it is what gives the cloth its name. Using the dye, they draw lines on the cloth to divide it into squares. Next, they carve symbols into calabash gourds, press the gourds into the dye, and stamp the symbols onto the fabric.

From left to right: Rotation, Scaling, and Reflection transformations

Stranger 68/100 - Shima

“We’re from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, so we’ve come a long way.”

Meet Shima.

“So, we’re here for this convention (Termis, a medical convention focusing on regenerative medicine) as poets… we’re spoken word poets. We’re doing poems on stem cell therapy and regenerative tissue engineering.”

Now how does poetry relate to that? “We write poetry about that. We have a doctor, a patron of the arts person, who’s brought us here kind of on his dollar. He just kind of fed us material and literature from his practice and we wrote poems based on those documents.”

Are you trying to be as interesting as possible? “{laughs} Yeah, we ration it. {laughs} But, yeah, so that’s why we’re here.”

What advice would you give to your younger self? “To my younger self, I would say… speak my truth from my guts. Because I think that’s the one thing I didn’t do very often when I was like in my early twenties.”

What woke you up? “A massive mental health crisis actually… and then I recovered through poetry. So, I just kept writing, got gigs, got jobs, furthered my skills with creative writing instruction as well as spoken word.”

So it was writing poetry that helped… “Yeah, the writing and the performance aspect. The performance aspect is becoming more and more prominent and prevalent in my life.”

How would your friends describe you? “My friends would describe me as strong, generous, probably like a little bit moody, moody is the thing, outspoken... and I guess wise. My pen name is Dwennimmen, it’s a West African name, from a dictionary of symbols called Adinkra. It means strength, humility, learning and wisdom. That’s why I chose it as a pen name.”

What is your biggest challenge now? “My biggest challenge is to cobble some kind of a living out my skills and education. I’m a spoken word poet, and there’s not a lot of paper in that.”

You just gotta grab that big spoken word poetry money… “Yeah, you know, I just gotta reach out and take it. {laughs} It’s an interesting thing trying to create a job description out of that or trying to find a role in my local economy that will keep those skills sharp and keep me rejuvenated and healthy. Because that is something that pulled me out of my crisis… it’s like I have to keep doing it.”

Technical Notes: This stranger encounter was a comedy of technical errors. About a third the way in, I realized that my camera was set to f11 aperture. Those pictures came out dark and flat. While trying to hastily fix the camera settings, I somehow switched the camera to manual mode. Then I ended up taking the rest of the photos in whatever settings were already dialed in which produced overexposed images. I was sick when I got home and discovered this. However, I was able to convert this image to black and white, dial down the exposure and add contrast and coloring. Ironically, all of those errors forced me to be more creative in Lightroom and helped me produce an image that I wouldn’t have otherwise created.

This picture is #68 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

A US made shirt from the 2009 Obama commemorative print produced by Akosombo Textiles Limited. A June 2009 Ghana news article says, in part:

"Accra June 18, GNA- Akosombo Textiles Limited (ATL) and Tex Styles (formerly GTP) have released two fabrics to the market in commemoration of the two-day visit to Ghana by Barrack Obama, the 44th President of the US from July 10.

The fabrics released last Friday are being sold at GH¢ 47 for 12 yards while one yard goes for GH¢ 4.50 with a muffler of the two presidents being sold at GH¢1.00.

During a visit to the Central Business District (CBS) of Accra, Ghana News Agency spotted the fabrics on display in a number of shops. The cloth printed by ATL has the portrait of President Obama with inscription "Barrack Obama, 44th President of the United States". It also has the inscription "Akwaaba".

It has blue background with Adinkra symbols as well as yellow spots embossed on it.

That of the GTP, which has a yellow background, has in addition flags of Ghana and the United States, portraits of Professor Evans John Atta Mills and President Obama together with their spouses Michelle Obama and Naadu Mills."

Adinkra symbols is one of the highly valued hand-printed and hand-embroidered cloths. The production and use of Adinkra is associated with the Asante people. Around the 19th Century, the Asante people developed their unique art of adinkra printing. Adinkra cloths were made and used exclusively by the royalty and spiritual leaders for very imported sacred ceremonies and rituals.

She put her arm down on the scanner, then flipped it over, and I photoshopped the two images together. Images include a Ghanaian adinkra symbol, luna moth, Saraswati (the Hindu goddess of music), a stylized tulip. and a grapevine.

These runes are handmade by Sheloya with the symbols embedded, not just painted on. They're as simple to use as Norse runes, but with a few differences. They are read by the four planes, not just the four directions, and there is a direction/orientation bone and Oya's mirror. Oya's mirror tells you whether the reading is telling you about the past and present or the future.

These were designed as they were for two reasons. One was so that a person who has the drive in them, but not the resources to train in diloggun (Yoruba shell divination) can read them. Secondly, many in the diaspora have incorporated symbols from other cultures, and those are legitimate modern adaptations.

Though I'd be happy for people to buy my bones, I'm also just as happy for people to make their own and post them on Flickr. I'd like to see more people trying out this method and what sort of symbols they use too.

At top: Gye Nyame (importance of God), Nyame Biribi Wo Soro (hope); row across: Hye Won Hye (imperishability), Nkyinkyim (dynamism), Eban (security); can't identify the two at the bottom.

Ghana 2011. Cotton.

I went to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery exhibition of African cloth today and this caught my eye.

It was displayed in different colourways, but this was the one that I found appealing.

Making adinkra cloth is a very interesting task. This young man was working on making such a cloth in the village of Ntonso.

Introducing my new and improved wedding band. I'm sure Mr. Grimm will elaborate upon this... we are not the 'typical' couple in the sense that we both are not fans of the stereotypical 'bling' (diamonds, gold, etc) because of all the falseness & evil that goes along with mining and selling these metals. For a while, I didn't even want a wedding band because I felt like we could not find a reputable company to deal with. And then... I discovered a place online that not only customizes jewelry but also does work with ankhs and adinkra symbols. I wanted a very simple band with sankofa & ankhs--and I finally got it!!

In this Ghanian village the world famous Adinkra cloth is woven and the dies are applied to it for the designs you see on these hanging on the clothes line.

Moonbear's shadow - also known as the one where the bear goes fishing. He tries to get away from his shadow. Themes - passing of time, natural cycles, changing position of shadows.

Frog and Toad - always a favorite.

No fighting, no biting! - A story within a story. Mia likes Cousin Joan who wants to read and be left alone. A little scary "...when big alligators are hungry, even little alligator children are not safe."

Dora loves her abuela - "...but I don't have an abuela" says Mia.

Old Bear - I love the illustrations and colors. It gets a little psychedelic, the sun is a daisy, it rains blueberries and leaves are butterflies, maybe something the bear ate before hibernation.

The Talking Cloth - Great story, family, African roots, adinkra cloth from Ghana, "...this child just grew an inch or two, inside, for knowing that." is a great thought about what makes us 'grow' as people.

Yoko's Paper Cranes - This was my favorite of the bunch. Cranes, migration, seasons, oragami, obaasan and ojisan, boat to america, letters and cranes in the mail, returning home. Also maps made from cut paper.

Lotus Seed - For older kids, didn't read it.

To maket, to market - Chaos in the kitchen. Cool mix of b/w photos with color illustrations.

Big and Little and More, more, more - Nothing special.

Eye Guess - Animals in habitat. Riddles and flaps to guess who the eyes belong to. Each illustration foreshadows the next animal. So nice to see animals not in the zoo or anthropomorphized.

The Mightiest - Power brings out the worst in people (animals). Grandma is the mightiest, but she doesn't need the crown to prove it.

Costume Party - What wacky dogs do on a rainy day.

Owl Lake - Gorgeous wood cut illustrations. Especially like the the sun rising over the lake.

Around the Pond - More animals in habitat, value of observing the environment and kids looking for berries.

The caterpillar and the polliwog - Transformation. Cartoony illustrations not my favorite.
