******************Handroanthus impetiginosus**************

Handroanthus impetiginosus, pink ipê or pink lapacho is a native Bignoniaceae tree of America, distributed from northern Mexico south to northern Argentina. Lapacho is the national tree of Paraguay, and it is also a common tree in Argentina's northeastern region, as well as in southeastern Bolivia. It is said to be indigenous to Trinidad and Tobago.

It is a conspicuous and well-known species with a long history of human use. Consequently it has a range of local names ipê-cavatã, ipê-comum, ipê-reto, ipê-rosa, ipê-roxo-damata, lapacho negro, pau d'arco-roxo, peúva or piúva. The timber is sometimes traded as "Brazilwood", which properly refers to the unrelated Pernambuco tree (Caesalpinia echinata).

Description

Foliage

Inflorescences

A single flower

The pink lapacho is a rather large deciduous tree, with trunks sometimes reaching 8 dm width and 30 m height. Usually a third of that height is trunk, and two thirds are its longer branches. It has a large, globous, but often sparse canopy. The tree has a slow growth rate. Leaves are opposite and petiolate, 2 to 3 inches long, elliptic and lanceolate, with lightly serrated margins and pinnate venation. The leaves are palmately compound with usually 5 leaflets.

Its bark is brownish grey, tough and hard to peel. The wood is of a pleasant yellowish colour, barely knotted and very tough and heavy (0,935 kg/dm³). It's rich in tannins and therefore very resistant to weather and sun. It is not very useful for furniture since it is so hard to work by hand. It can be found as beams or fulfilling other structural uses where needed outdoors.

Pink lapacho flowers between July and September, before the new leaves appear. In India, the flowering season is December to January, after the leaves are shed. The flower is large, tubular shaped, its corolla is often pink or magenta, though exceptionally seen white, about 2 inches long. There are four stamens and a staminode. The fruit consists of a narrow dehiscent capsule containing several winged seeds.

The flowers are easily accessible to pollinators. Some hummingbirds - e.g. black jacobin (Florisuga fusca) and black-throated mango (Anthracothorax nigricollis) - seem to prefer them over the flowers of other Handroanthus species, while for others like the stripe-breasted starthroat (Heliomaster squamosus) it may even be a mainstay food source.

Ecology

Harvest of wild Handroanthus impetiginosus for lumber to make flooring and decking (in which case it is referred to as ipê in much of the timber trade) has become a major cause of deforestation in the Amazon. Because the trees do not grow in concentrated stands but instead are found scattered throughout the forest, logging roads have to be built long distances to locate and harvest the trees. In most cases, once these trees are logged, the rest of the forest is cleared for agricultural use. Scientific examination of current logging practices, in which 90% of mature trees can be legally harvested, found that recovery from juvenile populations within 60 years was not likely under any feasible scenario (five were modeled). The parallel to the overharvesting of Swietenia macrophylla (big-leaf mahogany), a tree that grows in a similar distribution in the same areas as ipê, is interesting, yet ipê continues to be logged at prodigious rates with no sign of a listing in the Convention on Trade in International Species or other drastic actions likely necessary to prevent extinction. Swietenia mahagoni and Swietenia humilis (other species yielding mahogany wood) were so thoroughly depleted that by the early 1900s there were essentially none left to harvest in the wild. Unfortunately the current scenario is one in which Handroanthus is headed for similar unsustainable depletion of wild populations.

Uses

Lapacho tea

Handroanthus impetiginosus, as well as other species of this genus, are trees naturally found in the wild of central to South American forests. It is also used as a honey plant, and widely planted as ornamental tree in landscaping gardens, public squares and boulevards due to its impressive and colorful appearance as it flowers. Well-known and popular, it is the national tree of Paraguay. It is also planted as a street tree in cities of India, like in Bangalore.

The inner bark of Handroanthus impetiginosus is used in traditional medicine. It is dried, shredded, and then boiled, making a bitter brownish-colored tea known as lapacho or taheebo. The unpleasant taste of the extract is lessened when taken in pill form, or as tinctures. Lapacho bark is typically used during flu and cold season and for easing smoker's cough. It apparently works by promoting the lungs to expectorate and free deeply embedded mucus and contaminates during the first three to ten days of treatment.

In ethnomedicine, lapacho plays an important role for several South American indigenous peoples. In the past decades it has been used by herbalists as a general tonic, immunostimulant and adaptogen. It is used in herbal medicine for intestinal candidiasis.

However, the main active compound lapachol has since turned out to be toxic enough to kill fetuses in pregnant rats and reduce the weight of the seminal vesicle in male rats in doses of 100 mg/kg of body weight Still, lapachol has strong antibiotic and disinfectant properties, and may be better suited for topical applications. Lapachol induces genetic damage, specifically clastogenic effects, in rats. Beta-lapachone has a direct cytotoxic effect and the loss of telomerase activity in leukemia cells in vitro.

The ethnomedical use of lapacho and other Handroanthus teas is usually short-term, to get rid of acute ailments, and not as a general tonic. Usefulness as a short-term antimicrobial and disinfecting expectorant, e.g. against PCP in AIDS patients, is yet to be scientifically studied. Handroanthus impetiginosus inner bark seems to have anti-Helicobacter pylori activity. and has some effects on other human intestinal bacteria.

Rhodiola rosea. Native to the arctic regions of northern Europe, Russia, sothern Siberia and Canada (coastline of Newfoundland, northern Quebec and Nunavut). The name "roseroot" refers to scent of rose petals present in the fleshy roots. Also called "golden root" due to the plant's perceived value in the medicinal trade. The roots have been used in traditional medicine in Eastern Europe and Asia.

The roots are harvested and dried before the bioactive components (rosavins, salidroside, tyrosol) are extracted. The extract is an adaptogen and helps the human body to resist stress (chemical, biological and physical). It stimulates the nervous system, relieves depression, enhances work performans, improves cognition and memory, fights fatigue and prevents high altitude sickness. The plant also contains a number of antioxidants.

In the past, the plants were harvested from nature but due to the growing demand, these plants have been commercially cultivated in Finland, Norway and Canada (Alberta). During 2010, 30 ha of Rhodiola rosea was already in production in Alberta, making Alberta the leading supplier of cultivated Rhodiola in the world. The roots are harvested after 4-5 years since the concentration of the bioactive compounds is then at a peak. The income per 1ha of Rhodiola is equal in value to 250ha of canola.

Ocimum tenuiflorum, Holy Basil (also tulsi, tulasī), is an aromatic plant in the family Lamiaceae which is native throughout the Old World tropics and widespread as a cultivated plant and an escaped weed. It is an erect, much branched subshrub, 30–60 cm tall with hairy stems and simple, opposite, green leaves that are strongly scented. Leaves have petioles, and are ovate, up to 5 cm long, usually slightly toothed. The flowers are purplish in elongate racemes in close whorls. The two main morphotypes cultivated in India and Nepal are green-leaved (Sri or Lakshmi tulsi) and purple-leaved (Krishna tulsi).

Tulsi is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely known across South Asia as a medicinal plant and an herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda, and has an important role within the Vaishnavite tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving tulsi plants or leaves.

Ayurveda

Tulsi has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda for its diverse healing properties. It is mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Ayurvedic text. Tulsi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded in Ayurveda as a kind of "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity.

Pharmacology

Recent studies suggest tulsi may be a COX-2 inhibitor, like many modern painkillers, due to its high concentration of eugenol (1-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-allylbenzene). One small study showed it to reduce blood glucose levels in type 2 diabetics when combined with hypoglycemic drugs. The same study showed significant reduction in total cholesterol levels with tulsi. Another study showed its beneficial effect on blood glucose levels is due to its antioxidant properties. Tulsi also shows some promise for protection from radiation poisoning[7] and cataracts.[8]It has anti-oxidant properties and can repair cells damaged by exposure to radiation. The fixed oil has demonstrated antihyperlipidemic and cardioprotective effects in rats fed a high fat diet. Experimental studies have shown an alcoholic extract of tulsi modulates immunity, thus promoting immune system function. Some of the main chemical constituents of tulsi are: oleanolic acid, ursolic acid, rosmarinic acid, eugenol, carvacrol, linalool, β-caryophyllene, β-elemene (c.11.0%), β-caryophyllene (about 8%), and germacrene D (about 2%). β-Elemene has been studied for its potential anticancer properties, but human clinical trials have yet to confirm its effectiveness.

From Wikipedia:

Tulsi ( Ocimum tenuiflorum, तुलसी), which is Sanskrit for "the incomparable one", is worshiped throughout India. Tulsi has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda for its diverse healing properties. It is mentioned by Charaka in the Charaka Samhita, an ancient Ayurvedic text. Tulsi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded in Ayurveda as a kind of "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity.

Tulsi’s extracts are used in ayurvedic remedies for common colds, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation, heart disease, various forms of poisoning, and malaria. Traditionally, tulsi is taken in many forms: as herbal tea, dried powder, fresh leaf, or mixed with ghee.

Ginseng (/ˈdʒɪnsɛŋ/) is any one of the 11 species of slow-growing perennial plants with fleshy roots, belonging to the genus Panax of the family Araliaceae.

Ginseng is found in North America and in eastern Asia (mostly northeast China, Korea, Bhutan, eastern Siberia), typically in cooler climates. Panax vietnamensis, discovered in Vietnam, is the southernmost ginseng known. This article focuses on the species of the series Panax, which are the species claimed to be adaptogens, principally Panax ginseng and P. quinquefolius. Ginseng is characterized by the presence of ginsenosides and gintonin.

Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) is in the same family, but not genus, as true ginseng. Like ginseng, it is considered to be an adaptogenic herb. The active compounds in Siberian ginseng are eleutherosides, not ginsenosides. Instead of a fleshy root, Siberian ginseng has a woody root.

Over centuries, ginseng has been considered in China as an important component of Chinese traditional medicine, but there is no scientific confirmation of it having any clinical benefit to human health.

ETYMOLOGY

The English word ginseng derives from the Chinese term rénshēn (simplified: 人参; traditional: 人蔘). Rén means "Person" and shēn means "plant root"; this refers to the root's characteristic forked shape, which resembles the legs of a person. The English pronunciation derives from a southern Chinese reading, similar to Cantonese yun sum (Jyutping: jan4sam1) and the Hokkien pronunciation "jîn-sim".

The botanical/genus name Panax means "all-heal" in Greek, sharing the same origin as "panacea" was applied to this genus because Linnaeus was aware of its wide use in Chinese medicine as a muscle relaxant.

Besides P. ginseng, many other plants are also known as or mistaken for the ginseng root. The most commonly known examples are xiyangshen, also known as American ginseng 西洋参 (P. quinquefolius), Japanese ginseng 東洋参 (P. japonicus), crown prince ginseng 太子參 (Pseudostellaria heterophylla), and Siberian ginseng 刺五加 (Eleutherococcus senticosus). Although all have the name ginseng, each plant has distinctively different functions. However, true ginseng plants belong only to the Panax genus.

HISTORY

Control over ginseng fields in China and Korea became an issue in the 16th century. By the 1900s, due to the demand for ginseng having outstripped the available wild supply, Korea began the commercial cultivation of ginseng which continues to this day. In 2010, nearly all of the world's 80,000 tons of ginseng in international commerce was produced in four countries: China, South Korea, Canada, and the United States. Commercial ginseng is sold in over 35 countries with sales exceeded $2.1 billion, of which half came from South Korea. China has historically been the largest consumer for ginseng.

FOLK MEDICINE

The root is most often available in dried form, either whole or sliced. Ginseng leaf, although not as highly prized, is sometimes also used. Folk medicine attributes various benefits to oral use of American ginseng and Asian ginseng (P. ginseng) roots, including roles as an aphrodisiac or stimulant treatment, but there are no studies to date proving the effectiveness of ginseng for treating any disease.

Ginseng may be found in small doses in energy drinks or herbal teas, such as ginseng coffee. hair tonics and cosmetics preparations, but none has been proven effective.

RESEARCH

Ginsenosides, unique compounds of the Panax species, are under basic and clinical research to investigate their potential for use in medicine or when taken as a dietary supplement.

SAFETY

CONSIDERATIONS

Ginseng is known to contain phytoestrogens.

SIDE EFFECTS

A common side effect of P. ginseng may be insomnia, but this effect is disputed. Other side effects can include nausea, diarrhea, headaches, nose bleeds, high blood pressure, low blood pressure, and breast pains.

INTERACTIONS

Ginseng has been shown to have adverse drug reactions with phenelzine and warfarin; it has been shown to decrease blood alcohol levels. A potential interaction has also been reported with imatinib resulting in hepatotoxicity, and with lamotrigine causing DRESS syndrome.

Ginseng may also lead to induction of mania in depressed patients who mix it with antidepressants.

OVERDOSE

The common adaptogen ginsengs (P. ginseng and P. quinquefolia) are generally considered to be relatively safe even in large amounts. One of the most common and characteristic symptoms of acute overdose of Panax ginseng is bleeding. Symptoms of mild overdose may include dry mouth and lips, excitation, fidgeting, irritability, tremor, palpitations, blurred vision, headache, insomnia, increased body temperature, increased blood pressure, edema, decreased appetite, dizziness, itching, eczema, early morning diarrhea, bleeding, and fatigue.

Symptoms of gross overdose with Panax ginseng may include nausea, vomiting, irritability, restlessness, urinary and bowel incontinence, fever, increased blood pressure, increased respiration, decreased sensitivity and reaction to light, decreased heart rate, cyanotic (blue) facial complexion, red facial complexion, seizures, convulsions, and delirium.

Patients experiencing any of the above symptoms are advised to discontinue the herbs and seek any necessary symptomatic treatment, as well as medical advice in severe cases.

COMMON CLASSIFICATION

ASIAN GINSENG (ROOT)

Panax ginseng is available commercially as fresh, red, and white ginsengs; wild ginseng is used where available.

RED GINSENG

Red ginseng (traditional Chinese: 紅蔘; simplified Chinese: 红参; pinyin: hóng shēn; Hangul: 홍삼; hanja: 紅蔘; RR: hong-sam), P. ginseng, has been peeled, heated through steaming at standard boiling temperatures of 100 °C, and then dried or sun-dried. It is frequently marinated in an herbal brew which results in the root becoming extremely brittle.

FRESH GINSENG

Fresh ginseng is the raw product. Its use is limited by availability.

WHITE GINSENG

White ginseng, native to America, is fresh ginseng which has been dried without being heated. It is peeled and dried to reduce the water content to 12% or less. White ginseng air-dried in the sun may contain less of the therapeutic constituents. It is thought by some that enzymes contained in the root break down these constituents in the process of drying. Drying in the sun bleaches the root to a yellowish-white color.

WILD GINSENG

Wild ginseng grows naturally and is harvested from wherever it is found. It is relatively rare, and even increasingly endangered, due in large part to high demand for the product in recent years, which has led to the wild plants being sought out and harvested faster than new ones can grow (it requires years for a root to reach maturity). Wild ginseng can be either Asian or American, and can be processed to be red ginseng.

Woods-grown American ginseng programs in Vermont, Maine, Tennessee, Virginia, North Carolina, Colorado, West Virginia and Kentucky, and United Plant Savers have been encouraging the planting of ginseng both to restore natural habitats and to remove pressure from any remaining wild ginseng, and they offer both advice and sources of rootlets. Woods-grown plants have a value comparable to wild-grown ginseng of similar age.

Partially germinated ginseng seeds harvested the previous Fall can be planted from early Spring until late Fall, and will sprout the following Spring. If planted in a wild setting and left to their own devices, they will develop into mature plants which cannot be distinguished from native wild plants. Both Asian and American partially germinated ginseng seeds can be bought from May through December on various eBay sales. Some seed sales come with planting and growing instructions.

P- QUIQUEFOLIUS AMERICAN GINSENG (ROOT)

According to traditional Chinese medicine, American ginseng promotes yin energy, cleans excess yang and calms the body. The reason it has been claimed that American ginseng promotes yin (shadow, cold, negative, female) while Asian ginseng promotes yang (sunshine, hot, positive, male) is that, according to traditional Chinese medicine, things living in cold places or northern side of mountains or southern side of rivers are strong in yang and the converse, so the two are balanced. Chinese/Korean ginseng grows in Manchuria and Korea, the coldest area known to many Koreans in ancient times. Thus, ginseng from there is supposed to be very yang.

Originally, American ginseng was imported into China via subtropical Guangzhou, the seaport next to Hong Kong, so Chinese doctors believed American ginseng must be good for yang, because it came from a hot area. They did not know, however, that American ginseng can only grow in temperate regions. Nonetheless, the root is legitimately classified as more yin because it generates fluids.

Most North American ginseng is produced in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and British Columbia and the American state of Wisconsin. P. quinquefolius is now also grown in northern China.

The aromatic root resembles a small parsnip that forks as it matures. The plant grows 6″ to 18″ tall, usually bearing three leaves, each with three to five leaflets two to five inches long.

OTHER PLANTS SOMETIMES CALLED GINSENG

Several other plants are sometimes referred to as ginsengs, but they are either from a different family or genus.

Angelica sinensis (female ginseng, dong quai)

Codonopsis pilosula (poor man's ginseng)

Eleutherococcus senticosus (Siberian ginseng)

Gynostemma pentaphyllum (southern ginseng, jiaogulan)

Lepidium meyenii (Peruvian ginseng, maca)

Oplopanax horridus (Alaskan ginseng)

Panax notoginseng (known as san qi, tian qi or tien chi; ingredient in yunnan bai yao)

Pfaffia paniculata (Brazilian ginseng, suma)

Pseudostellaria heterophylla (prince ginseng)

Schisandra chinensis (five-flavoured berry)

Withania somnifera (Indian ginseng, ashwagandha)

WIKIPEDIA

Ocimum tenuifolium (known as Holy basil in English, and Tulasi in Sanskrit), is a well known aromatic plant in the family Lamiaceae. Apart from its culinary uses, for which it is known across the world, it is also used as a medicinal plant, and has an important role within many traditions of Hinduism, wherein devotees perform worship involving Tulasi plants or leaves. Native to India, it is a short lived perennial herb or small shrub, often grown as an annual. The foliage is green or purple, strongly scented. Leaves have petioles, and are ovate, up to 5cm long, usually somewhat toothed. Flowers are white, tinged purple, borne in racemes.

Its aroma is distinctively different from its close cousin, the Thai Basil which is sometimes wrongly called Holy Basil, in shops and on the internet, but they can be distinguished by their aroma and flavour. Holy Basil is slightly hairy, whereas Thai Basil is smooth and hairless; Holy Basil does not have the strong aniseed or licorice smell of Thai Basil; and Holy Basil has a spicy flavor sometimes compared to cloves.

Known as Tulasi (alternate spelling Tulsi) in India it is an important symbol in many Hindu religious traditions which link the plant with the Goddess figure described in the Puranas. The name "Tulasi" in sanskrit means "the incomparable one". The Tulasi plant is known in India in two forms - dark or Shyama (Krishna) Tulasi and light or Rama Tulasi. The former possesses greater medicinal value and is commonly used for worship.

Tulasi has also been known for thousands of years as a prime herb in Ayurvedic treatment, for its diverse healing properties. It is mentioned by Charaka in the Charaka Samhita, the central teaching of Ayurvedic medicine, and in the Rigveda. Tulasi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded as a kind of "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity.

Tulasi as an Ayurvedic medicine:Tulasi’s extracts are used in ayurvedic remedies for common colds, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation, heart disease, various forms of poisoning, and malaria. Traditionally, tulasi is taken in many forms: as an herbal tea, dried powder, fresh leaf, or mixed with ghee. Essential oil extracted from Karpoora Tulsi is mostly used for medicinal purposes and in herbal toiletry. For centuries, the dried leaves of Tulasi have been mixed with stored grains to repel insects.

Recent studies suggest that Tulasi may be a COX-2 inhibitor, like many modern painkillers, due to its significant amount of Eugenol (1-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-allylbenzene). Studies have also shown Tulsi to be effective for diabetes, by reducing blood glucose levels. The same study showed significant reduction in total cholesterol levels with Tulsi. Another study showed that Tulsi's beneficial effect on blood glucose levels is due to its antioxidant properties.

Tulasi also shows some promise for protection from radiation poisoning and cataracts. Some Vaishnavites do not use Tulasi for medicine, though, out of reverence. However, the use of Tulsi for purification and as a medicine is widespread throughout India. Many Hindus — along with the ancient tradition of Ayurveda — believe that the healing properties of sacred herbs such as Tulsi were given by the Lord himself, and can be used as a medicine out of reverence.

Tulasi in scripture: A number of passages in the Puranas and other scriptures (Vedas), point to the importance of tulsi within religious worship. Tulasi is regarded as a goddess (Lakshmi) and a consort of Vishnu. A garland of tulasi leaves is the first offering to the Lord as part of the daily ritual. Tulsi is accorded the sixth place among the eight objects of worship in the ritual of the consecration of the kalasha, the container of holy water.

According to one story, Tulasi was a gopi who fell in love with Krishna and so had a curse laid on her by His consort Radha. She is very dear to Vishnu. Tulsi is also mentioned in the stories of Mira and Radha immortalised in Jayadeva's Gita Govinda. One story has it that when Krishna was weighed in gold, not even all the ornaments of His consort Satyabhama could outweigh Him. But a single tulsi leaf placed on one side by his consort Rukmini tilted the scale.

Tulsi is ceremonially married to Vishnu annually on the eleventh bright day of the month of Kaartika in the lunisolar calendar. This festival continues for five days and concludes on the full moon day, which falls in mid-October. This ritual, called the "Tulsi Vivaha", inaugurates the annual marriage season in India.

In the Christian tradition it is said that Tulsi grew around the place of Crucifixion. Tulasi is also mentioned in Shiite writings.

Quotes regarding Tulasi:

"As by chanting the name of Ganges, one becomes free from all kinds of worldly sins, if someone chants the name of Tulasi or chants the glories of Lord Hari with devotion, he gets the same merit." - From the Brhan Naradiya Purana

"Just by touching Tulsidevi one's body becomes pure. By praying to her, all diseases practically become removed. If one waters her or makes her wet, the fear of Yamaraja (death personified) is destroyed." - From the Skanda Purana

"Tulasi is most beloved of Lord Krishna and thus her leaves and flowers are also most dear to Him." - Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura

"Tulasi leaf is very, very dear to Vishnu." - A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

Tulasi as a deity"

The presence of a Tulsi plant symbolizes the religious bent of a Hindu family. In many traditions (i.e Vaishnavism), a household is considered incomplete if it doesn't have a Tulasi plant. Many families have the Tulasi planted in a specially built structure, which has images of deities installed on all four sides, and an alcove for small earthen oil lamp. Some households can even have up to a dozen Tulasi plants on the verandah or in the garden forming a "Tulsi-van" or "Tulsivrindavan" — a miniature basil forest.

Places that tend to inspire concentration and places ideal for worship, according to the Gandharva tantra, include "grounds overgrown with Tulsi plants". The Tulsi Manas Mandir at Varanasi is one such famous temple, where Tulasi is worshipped along with other devas (demi-gods/goddesses). Vaishnavites, or followers of Vishnu, revere the Tulasi leaf because it pleases Vishnu the most and thus is as an inherent part of offerings of naivedya. They also wear beaded necklaces made of Tulasi stems. The manufacture of these Tulasi necklaces is a cottage industry in places of pilgrimage and temple towns. Another name for Tulsi within the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition is Vrindadevi, meaning 'the goddess of Vrindavan'.

Tulasi Puja:

Followers of Hindu traditions often keep a Tulsi plant in front of their house. On a specific day each year known as 'Kartik Shukla Dwadashi' (usually about two weeks after Diwali) there is a tradition wherein Tulasi plants will be beautifully decorated with structures made of sugarcane, mango leaves and flowers and then a puja (form of worship) is offered.

As with Diwali celebrations there are usually clay lamps lit around the Tulasi plant and the house. In some parts of India people will have also have fireworks displays to mark the occasion. In northern India and in Gaudiya Vaishnava communities it is called the 'Tulsi vivah' or the wedding day of Tulasi with Krishna in his Sila form. There is another celebration called Tulsi Ekadashi where Tulasi is worshipped on the Ekadasi day.

ling chih, and the "phantom mushroom." This last name is because there are very few of these mushrooms — less than 10 mushrooms can be found on every 100,000 trees. Reishi has been used in Asia for millenia to stimulate the immune system, increase energy, and promote longevity.

Western medicine has begun using reishi as an adaptogen, a substance which adapts itself to correct whichever imbalances exist in the body. It is used in herbal medicine in order to strengthen the immune system and reduce chemotherapy side effects, asthma, allergies, and mushroom poisoning. It is possible that reishi can also protect the human body against some kinds of cancer, because it may stop the formation of breast and uterine fibroids. It also contains ganoderic acids to prevent liver cancer.

For centuries, reishi has been used in Asia to treat chronic stress. Recent research at Oral Roberts University showed that reishi inhibits nerve impulses through the central nervous system and reduces emotional stress. This effect has been used in Japan to treat physical pain that occurs with neuralgia and shingles. Reishi is also used to prevent and treat memory loss.

Clinical studies have shown that reishi can lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol in animals and humans. Some people who do not respond to prescription medication for high blood pressure improved while using reishi. Reishi is also used to detoxify the body and to prevent cirrhosis of the liver in early stage alcoholics.

Reishi can be bought at many health food stores as well as from herbalists. It comes in capsules, tablets, tinctures, extract, and teas. Fresh reishi mushrooms can also be eaten, but only if cooked first. The normal dosage of reishi is between 2 and 6 grams of raw mushroom eaten once per day, or around 150 to 300 mg of extract taken three or four times a day.

This herb should not be used by anyone who is allergic to mushrooms or mold. No one should use reishi continuously for more than three months at a time. When used for longer than three months, nosebleeds,

Species of Reishi or Ling chih have a long and fascinating history. Ssu-ma Ch’ien, a Ch’in Dynasty historian (ca. 215 BC), tells of an obsessive ongoing search for a wondrous “chih” or fungus directed by the King, Shi-Huang. A mariner named Hsu Fu was dispatched out to sea to search remote islands for chih. He came back with fantastic tales of palaces made of chih. The palaces were so bright that they lit up the heavens and the fungus was said to have the ability to revive the dead (Shih chou chi, Notes on Ten Continents). In 109 BC, a fungus believed to be Ganoderma appeared on site at the construction of the new Kan-chuan Imperial Palace. It was called “ling chih”, the same name that was printed on silk cloth with a Ganoderma specimen going back to the Han Dynasty (100 BC to 100 AD).

The Chinese have always regarded the mushroom as having special properties. Mushrooms are regarded as "spirit medicine' because they are believed to nourish the shen, or spirit.

As such, they are considered particularly important in vegetarian diets and regarded as a medicinal food that promotes longevity. Various medicinal mushrooms are used by the Chinese.

One of the oldest recorded botanical monograph has claimed that reishi mushroom made the body lighter, which may refer to its ability to reduce cholesterol and blood lipid levels. They also have immunbe potentiating properties.

Reishi has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 4,000 years. The Chinese name Ling zhi translates as the “herb of spiritual potency” and was highly prized as an elixir of immortality. Its traditional Chinese medicine indications include treatment of general fatigue and weakness, asthma, insomnia, and cough.

Active Compounds:

Reishi contains several constituents, including sterols, coumarin, mannitol, polysaccharides, and triterpenoids called ganoderic acids. Ganoderic acids seem to help lower blood pressure as well as decrease low density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglyceride levels. These specific triterpenoids also help to reduce blood platelets from sticking together—an important factor in lowering the risk for coronary artery disease.

While human research demonstrates some efficacy for the herb in treating altitude sickness and chronic hepatitis B, these uses still need to be confirmed.

Tulsi also shows some promise for protection from radiation poisoning and cataracts. It has anti-oxidant properties and can repair cells damaged by exposure to radiation.

GINSENG

Korean Ginseng

Scientific Name: Panax Ginseng

Ginsengs are best known as "adaptogens", which are substances that may help individuals cope with physical and emotional stress. As a part of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, Panax ginseng has been used to treat almost every possible ailment from anxiety to cancer. Currently, it is used extensively in Oriental countries as an everyday tonic to maintain overall health as well as to treat several illnesses, including heart conditions.

In Western herbal medicine, Panax ginseng's possible ability to regulate the immune system has been studied for potential effectiveness in preventing colds, flu, and some forms of cancer. In clinical studies, Panax ginseng has been shown to lower blood levels of both sugar and cholesterol. Therefore, it may help treat type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol.

Both topical and oral forms of Panax ginseng are used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. One large study also found that taking Panax ginseng orally improved male fertility by increasing numbers, quality, and movement of sperm.

GANODERMA

Ganoderma belongs to the Polyporaceae group of the Fungi family - Reishi and some formulas contain other mushrooms.

Ganoderma works in the treatment of cancer because it helps cleanse the body from toxins and it helps strengthen the immune system. It enhances liver detoxification, thus improving liver function and stimulating the regeneration of liver cells - making it a very important supplement for those who have liver cancer.

The anti-cancer agents in Ganoderma are the polysaccharides and Germanium. The polyshaccharide fraction of Ganoderma is largely responsible for its anti-tumor efficacy. Indications for Ganoderma use in cancer include supplementation

a) to reduce side-effects during chemotherapy or radiotherapy,

b) to prolong survival and minimize metastasis,

c) to improve quality of life, and

d) to prevent occurrence or recurrence.

Ganoderma can be used as a supplement during chemotherapy or radiotherapy to reduce side-effects such as fatigue, loss of appetite, hair loss, bone marrow suppression and risk of infection. It can also reduce the toxic and side effects and mitigate the pains during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, in particular to cancer patients at terminal stages for prolonging their lives and improving their living quality.

Qualities of Ganoderma that help in the treatment of cancer include:

• It enhances and helps regulate the immune and endocrine system, prevent tumors, improving the circulation and eliminating harmful free radicals.

• Inhibits DNA synthesis of the cancer cells, destroys the terminal enzyme activity of the tumor cells, promotes macrophages and regulates T and B lymphocytes, thus restraining the spread of cancer cells.

• It can also reduce the toxic and side effects and mitigate the pains during chemotherapy and radiotherapy

• Enhances liver detoxification, thus improving liver function and stimulating the regeneration of liver cells.

• Helps with cancerous ascites, increases appetite and help relieve the pain of late stage cancer.

• It is especially effective with kidney diseases.

GRAPE SEED

• Other reasons for the use of grape seed extract include complications related to diabetes, such as nerve and eye damage; vision problems, such as macular degeneration (which can cause blindness); and swelling after an injury or surgery.

• Grape seed extract is also used for cancer prevention and wound healing.

AGARICUS BLAZEI MURILL

A mushroom native to and grown in the southeastern part of Brazil, contain the highest amount of beta-D-glucan (beta (1,3) and (1,6) Glucan) measured in a mushroom. Over the past 30 years, Beta Glucan has been the subject of much research yielding results that support usage for enhancement of the immune system, as well as cardio vascular support, blood sugar and cholesterol modulators, and digestive support. Recent studies support its anti-oxidant activity. Compared to the other commonly used Oriental mushrooms - including Maitake, Reishi, and Shiitake - the ABM mushroom demonstrated far superior Immune Enhancing Effects. Various studies attribute this effect to the much higher levels of key polysaccharides, mainly beta glucans and other components, which are unique to the ABM mushroom. At present ABM isconsidered the most potent mushroom in supporting the immune system.

How does Agaricus Blazei Mushroom Helps you to Fight Cancer?

• Agaricus Blazei Mushroom effectively fight cancer cells by enhancing the body's own immune system

• Researchers discovered that the Agaricus Blazei Mushroom is rich in two polysaccharide compounds, the Beta-1,3 D-glucan and Beta-1,6 D-glucan.

• Further studies revealed that the mushroom has been clinically found to be effective in improving most health problems

• Studies showed that the number of cancer cells generated in the body decreased considerably due to the polysaccharides found in the mushroom

• The mushroom was cited as a powerful antiviral agent that helped prevent viruses and harmful agents from entering delicate tissue.

• The polysaccharides found in the mushroom were found to be effective against Ehrlich's ascites carcinoma (EAC), sigmoid colonic cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, and liver cancer as well as most solid tumors.

Rhodiola rosea is a PERENNIAL growing to 0.3 m (1ft) by 0.3 m (1ft in). found from Arctic regions of Europe, Asia and N. America, including Britain, further south on mountains.

It is hardy to zone 1 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from May to August, and the seeds ripen from Jul to August. The flowers are dioecious (individual flowers are either male or female, but only one sex is to be found on any one plant so both male and female plants must be grown if seed is required) and are pollinated by Bees, flies. The plant is not self-fertile.

The young succulent leaves and shoots are eaten raw or cooked like spinach. A slightly bitter taste, we find them unpleasant on their own though they can be used as a small part of a mixed salad. They can be made into a sauerkraut. Stems - cooked and eaten like asparagus. Root - raw or cooked. It was fermented before being eaten by the N. American Indians.

Though little known as a medicinal plant, rose root has been used in traditional European medicine for over three thousand years, mainly as a tonic. Modern research has shown that it increases the body's resistance to any type of stress by regulating the body's hormonal response. Its use has been shown to have a protective effect upon the neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine in the brain. It improves neurotransmitter activity by inhibiting their enzymatic destruction and preventing their decline caused by excessive stress hormone release. Rose root also enhances the transport of serotonin's precursors into the brain and studies have shown that use of this herb can increase brain serotonin by up to 30%.

The root is adaptogen. It has an enhancing effect upon physical endurance and sexual potency. A decoction of the flowers has been used to treat stomach aches and intestinal discomfort. The raw flowers have been eaten in the treatment of tuberculosis.

An herb of great antiquity, going back to ancient Greece, Rhodiola has been used to treat depression and fatigue in Russia for decades. As an adaptogen, it can greatly improve athletic performance by increasing recovery time, increase the effeciancy of T-cells to improve immunity, help with memory, helps regulate the heart beat and counteract arrhythmia.

"In recent times, Rhodiola Root, which has been favourably compared to Siberian Ginseng, has been the subject of studies in Scandinavia and the former Soviet Union which have shown Rhodiola Root to be effective in improving cognitive function, boosting the immune system, enhancing athletic performance, promoting weight loss, and relieving stress.

Rhodiola has also been used to treat premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.

Rhodiola Root is now being studied for its effect in fighting depression, Parkinson's, ADD, and fibro myalgia." www.theherbspiral.com/supps/herbpages/RhodiolaRoot.htm

From Wikipedia:

The plant is covered with brittle yellow spines that break off easily if the plants are handled or disturbed, and the entire plant has been described as having a "primordial" appearance. Devil's Club is very sensitive to human impact and does not reproduce quickly. The plants are slow growing and take many years to reach seed bearing maturity, and predominately exist in dense, moist, old growth conifer forests in the Pacific Northwest.

This species usually grows in moist, dense forest habitats, and is most abundant in old growth conifer forests. It is found from south-central Alaska to western Oregon and eastward to western Alberta and Montana. Disjunct native populations also occur over 1,500 kilometres (930 mi) away in Lake Superior on Isle Royale and Passage Island, Michigan and Porphyry Island and Slate Island, Ontario.

Native Americans used the plant both as food and medicine. The plant was traditionally used by Native Americans to treat adult-onset diabetes and a variety of tumors. Traditionally, it was and is still used to make paints. In vitro studies showed that extracts of Devil's Club inhibit tuberculosis microbes.[3]

Because Devil's club is related to American Ginseng, some think that the plant is an adaptogen ("mind enhancer"). The plant has been harvested for this purpose and marketed widely as "Alaskan ginseng", which may damage populations of Devil's Club and its habitat.

I had never before looked Tulsi this much close. With the macro photography I was simply amazed to see the beauty of the tiny flowers of Tulsi.

There is two types of Tulsi, the photo is perhaps of hybrid Tulsi.

More about Tulsi From Wikipedia :

Known as Tulasi (alternate spelling Tulsi) in India it is an important symbol in many Hindu religious traditions which link the plant with the Goddess figure described in the Puranas. The name "Tulasi" in Sanskrit means "the incomparable one"[3]. The Tulasi plant is known in India in two forms - dark or Shyama (Krishna) Tulasi and light or Rama Tulasi. The former possesses greater medicinal value and is commonly used for worship.

Tulasi has also been used for thousands of years as a prime herb in Ayurvedic treatment, for its diverse healing properties. It is mentioned by Charaka in the Charaka Samhita, the central teaching of Ayurvedic medicine, and in the Rigveda. Tulasi is considered to be an adaptogen, balancing different processes in the body, and helpful for adapting to stress. [4] Marked by its strong aroma and astringent taste, it is regarded as a kind of "elixir of life" and believed to promote longevity.

Oxygen MaxTM is sugar and caffeine free eliminating a premature fatigue or “crash” during hard physical exertion. What makes it so effective is our unique combination of ingredients. Our proprietary compound uses the following:

Cordycep sinensis is a type of fungus native to the Himalayan Mountains. Native to Tibet, Nepal, and Northern India regions their natural habitat is at high altitudes typically between 10,000ft and 14,000ft. While, there are hundreds of different species of cordyceps the most potent and sought after species is Sinensis. It has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and Chinese medicine for centuries dating back almost 1,500 years and is currently classified as an herbal Adaptogen. Adaptogens are a special class of plants recognized for their unique healing qualities. Early Tibetan herdsmen observed that their Yaks became more energetic after consuming the fungus and for centuries traders who routinely traveled the Himalayan region also used Cordycep sinensis to stay more alert and energetic at high altitudes. Highly prized in China they were known to trade their weight in gold or silver.

Rhodiola rosea also known as Golden Root, Roseroot and Aaron's Rod is a wild flower with a natural habitat in cold regions and high altitudes typically around 7,500ft. The areas where it can be found naturally are; Arctic, mountains of Central Asia, Rocky Mountains, Scandinavia, Iceland, and Europe particularly the Alps and Pyrenees. It has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, also known as hóng jǐng tiān, and is currently classified as an Adaptogen. Adaptogens are a special class of plants recognized for their unique healing qualities. It has also been used extensively in Scandinavia and Russia to help cope with extreme climates and altitudes.

Ginkgo biloba is a living fossil millions of years old, for centuries it was thought to be extinct, but was found in two small areas in Zhejiang province in Eastern China. It is believed that these trees survived because Chinese monks cultivated them for thousands of years. It has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is also known as ái guǒ ('white fruit') or yínxìng (silver apricot). In Europe it is widely used for treating dementia because of its ability to improve blood flow to the brain. Laboratory studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood circulation by dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness of blood platelets.

Did you do it? Did you say you would stop smoking for 2014? Have you yet? Are you trying? Do you know how? If you have the will power, there is a way! There is a way to quit smoking in 14 days or less, without the patch, without medication, without hypnosis, and you can learn from the best! First of all, let's debunk the scams, the shams and the risky products and then talk about the natural way to get off cigarettes for good.

Medications like Chantix and Zyban do work for some people, but for others, they block natural dopamine production in the body and lead to heightened anxiety, depression, feelings of suicide and even suicide itself. (www.naturalnews.com)

The nicotine patch only releases about 1 milligram of nicotine per hour, which is nothing like smoking commercial cigarettes, which are loaded with up to 100 mg of nicotine in just one cigarette, due to ammonia (free-basing) treatment at the factory. Nicotine gum only delivers about 3 to 4 mg of nicotine, so you'd have to chew a whole pack every hour to even come close to weaning yourself off nicotine. Hypnosis works for some people, but again, its not comprehensive, doesn't include nutrition, and for some, the self "psych-out" just doesn't fly. On the other hand, electronic cigarettes have doubled in sales in the past couple of years, but they still keep you addicted to nicotine. You can escape the nicotine "prison" altogether if you are ready to learn the natural method.

Let's delve into the three-phase plan of 14AndOut, which provides the most balanced and comprehensive cessation program available. Once you learn how the chemical hangover sets you up for another hook of nicotine, you can make sense of the "vicious cycle" and learn the secrets to escaping:

Phase I: Chemical Knowledge

When you learn what chemicals are in commercial cigarettes that are bringing you down, making you feel nervous, anxious and in need of nicotine "relief," you will finally understand what's driving this vicious cycle that has you smoking a pack a day or more. This is the first step in quitting for good. The 14AndOut program provides inside knowledge of this, as the teacher has dissected cigarettes and revealed to the world what's causing the "cigarette hangover." You can escape.

Phase II: Behavior Modification

Many of the behaviors and rituals in which you engage when smoking are actually good for you, but you may not realize it. When you inhale, hold and exhale, you are engaging in a breathing pattern that helps you relax. You could continue this WITHOUT cigarettes, every hour, every time you would have had a smoke. You can also continue your hand-to-mouth habit, but now with organic chocolate, raw nuts, organic fruit and vegetable nibbles like carrots, celery or energy bars.

Phase III: Nutrition Implementation

The latest research conducted by the best nutrition experts in the world found out exactly what nutrients are depleted in your body due to cigarettes and the 4,000 chemicals that you've been inhaling for years. Learn what you need to be eating, especially during the first 14 days of quitting, and then for the remaining six months, when many people get stressed out and return to smoking. The natural method can save you from the nightmare and keep you from ever craving another smoke. Organic foods and herbal tinctures can alkalize the body, and mucuna - a natural bean (sold as a supplement) that raises your dopamine levels safely - could be the answer that you've been looking for, and your yellow brick road to the castle of good health. Mucuna (a.k.a. dopabean) is known by smokers around the world to kill the cravings - and they say, if you can kill the cravings, you cut the habit. Identifying roadblocks, utilizing proper nutrition and thinking positively all go a long way when applied consistently.

You can make sure that your New Year's resolution doesn't fall by the wayside. Don't get frustrated and don't fall for scams that keep you addicted to nicotine or simply get you to switch habits.

Remember, having the will to do something doesn't always mean that you can just do it. You need the right tools and the right "road map." If you were going to climb a mountain, you would want to have the right gear and a good guide. The same concept applies to quitting smoking. The fast-paced environment of everyday living is stressful and at times overwhelming. Lacking the nutrients to provide both sustained energy and that "burst of energy" often needed, modern diets frequently require supplements to fill the gap.

Agel OHM is a blend of vitamins, minerals, and herbs that complement a proper diet and regular exercise to support the body by providing the "extra energy" required to meet everyday demands. It does not rely upon chemical stimulants like caffeine or ephedra. Rather, it looks to a B-complex vitamin-based formula that acts as a coenzyme to facilitate the body's own metabolic processes required to convert carbohydrates into energy. Panax Ginseng is included, which is a strong adaptogen to help the body resist stressful influences. Panax Ginseng has also been associated with beneficial effects on motor performance, cognitive behavior and overall quality of Life. Likewise, OHM contains Rhodiola rosea to help improve physical endurance and mental performance, and to reduce stress-induced fatigue. Schizandra, grown in China and Korea, is another premium herb found in OHM. It was used historically, and still used today to help improve concentration, strength, stamina, endurance, and alertness, without causing nervousness like caffeine related stimulants.

Although nothing can replace a healthy diet and regular physical activity, Agel OHM may be an excellent source of additional energy during a stressful day.

I shot over 100 pictures of him one Sunday at the Bhendi Bazar corner where he sits on the way to Imawada ahead but to my luck I formatted the card by mistake and shot some other pictures on it, I felt terrible as he gave me a free bottle of salajeet mixture a spoonful to be taken with milk every morning ...this is a aphrodisiac for adding fire to a languishing libido..

About Salajit from wikipedia

Shilajit

Silajit, also known as shilajit, mumijo, and momia,[1] is used in the Ayurveda, the traditional Indian system of medicine. Shilajit is a rasayana material and is an adaptogen, i.e. a material that enhances strength, stamina, and stress relief.[2] The composition of shilajit is not well understood, but has been reported to contain at least 85 minerals in Ionic form, including triterpenes and aromatic carboxylic acid, as well as humic acid and fulvic acid.[3] Clinical studies are being conducted to corroborate the ancient claims as to the drug’s various properties.[citation needed] A similar extract from the Caucasus Mountains is called Mumijo, but is not considered as strong as the Himalayan Shilajit.[2]

[edit] The name

Shilajit is a Sanskrit word meaning "exuding from the rocks." It is also spelt "Shilajeet," and "Salajeet(سلاجیت)" in Urdu and is known by various other names, such as Shilajita Mumiyo, mineral pitch or mineral wax in English, black asphaltum, and Asphaltum punjabianum in Latin. Shilajit is commonly called Shilajitu in Ayurveda. Other names by which Shilajit is famous are asphaltum, mineral pitch, and girij. It should not be confused with Ozokerite, also a humic matter, similar in appearance, but without medical qualities. Quite a few food supplement sellers pretend to sell Mumijo, while in fact they are offering the cheap raw Ozokerite, a substance used e.g. in cosmetics.[4] Genuine Mumijo / Shilajit should melt in the hand and has a faint smell of bitumen, whereas Ozokerite melts at 164-169 F/73.3-76.1 C.

It is a kind of resin that oozes out from Himalayan Mountains due to the heating effect of the sun in summer. It is pale brown to blackish brown in colour. This resin is soft in texture, slimy to touch, pure and heavy. It is soluble in water.

Infosahay says that according to legends famous in India, Shilajit is considered as nectar, or amrit from God, given to mankind to live life youthfully and become immortal.[citation needed] 11

There are many grades of ginseng, and many forms, from the caps to the dried chips available in Chinese shops. In general, the more complete the root, and therefore the more pure, the more expensive. It is therefore rare to see the whole root unless one heads into Chinatown or works with herbs in a professional capacity.

Since it's really impossible to offer a whole root with an exact weight amount, I have decided to offer this panacea in this rare form in a traditional manner. I will ship whole roots that add up to not less than 20g, with bigger ones coming in at about 25g.

Ginseng is an herb that must be taken over the long term to experience it's many benefits. There is very little to be gained from taking ginseng in one time doses, except to boost a long-term program.

Two ancient herbs: golden chia from the West and ginseng from the East, combine to create a modern miracle - Forever® Gin-Chia®. Let this powerful combination of herbs give your body back what your busy lifestyle takes out!

Golden Chia, or North American Sage, was used by southwest Native American Indians in the US at the turn of the century for its life-sustaining properties. Chia contains healthful polyunsaturated fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, and protein.

Ginseng is legendary as a tonic, earning its name as the “King of Tonics.” It contains saponins, making ginseng an adaptogen (a compound that adapts its effects depending on the needs of the body). Ginseng is also a potent antioxidant.

Together these two legendary herbs pack a powerful punch to help you get through the day.

factoids from wikipedia:

The birch is considered a national tree of Russia, where it used to be worshipped as a goddess during the Green Week in early June.

In northern latitudes birch is however considered to be the most important allergenic tree pollen, with an estimated 15-20% of hay fever sufferers sensitive to birch pollen grains.

The chaga mushroom is an adaptogen that grows on white birch trees, extracting the birch constituents and is used as a remedy for cancer.

The bark is high in betulin and betulinic acid, phytochemicals which have potential as pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals which show promise as industrial lubricants.

Birch bark can be soaked until moist in hot water, and then formed into a cast for a broken arm[citation needed].

The inner bark of birch can be ingested safely.((says wiki- not me)
