... and honouring Julia Lerman, Sara Ford, Michele Bustamante and Elisabeth Freeman. Of all the many computer books I own, these were the only four female authors I could find.

"Introduction to Computers" (1990)

Today the Rogues are invading Ada Lovelace Day, an international day of blogging which celebrates women in science and technology.

Since this photostream is essentially the nearest thing I have to a blog these days, I decided to do something here.

I could have done someone famous for my entry, but went closer to home. Very close. I chose my wife.

As many of you know, Catherine and I run our own IT training business. We do home-based training for people who are looking to get the most out of their computers; in some cases we are dealing with people who are afraid even to switch them on. Catherine is a positive, driving force behind the business, and her willingness and ability to impart computer knowledge has made a real difference in many of our customers' lives.

I should also add that she has a degree in zoology and botany, and for many years taught science at a girls school, helping forge a new generation of women in science and technology.

So for Ada Lovelace Day 2010 I give you - Catherine.

Ada Lovelace is known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. She was the first to recognise that the machine had applications beyond pure calculation, and to have published the first algorithm intended to be carried out by such a machine. As a result, she is often regarded as the worlds first software engineer
