In Honor of Ada Lovelace Day, the girls are using every bit of technology they can find. Thank you, Ada, for paving the way for women and computing, and for being a hero all our girls can look up to!

The London home of Ada Countess Lovelace (daughter of the poet Lord Byron), computing pioneer and assistant to Charles Babbage.

Unfortunately it was raining quite heavily the day of my visit and a few raindrops regrettably fell upon the lens of the camera.

I am on a walking holiday in Somerset and quite by chance I came upon Porlock Tourist Information Centre which has a computer centre called "The Lovelace Centre". Further enquiries uncovered a pamphlet called " The House at Ashley Combe " a house which was occupied by the Lovelace family.

The pamphlet was written by Barbara Milne and features this photograph of Ada

Ada Lovelace, mathematician who wrote some of the first computer programs. She understood how this technology could be applied. Painting created using photograph attributed to be her.

This is the portion I had to fill in when I ran out of yarn, I think it matches really well considering it was my only white sock yarn--

One of the members of the 'Buildings through the Ages' group of Northampton U3A organised very informative walk around the St James area of London, which has some very impressive buildings. After coffee in The Crypt at St Martin In the Fields we made our way along Pall Mall looking at all the 'Gentlemen's Clubs', and then into the exclusive St James area

This is a detail lino block print of Countess, Lady Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), who published the first computer program.* She worked together with Charles Babbage, the inventor of the Difference Engine and the Analytical Engine (the first - analogue! - computers), correcting his notes on how to calculate Bernoulli Numbers with the Analytical Engine. More importantly, she (a great communicator, daughter of mad, bad and dangerous to know Lord Byron) was able to understand and explain the workings of the analytical engine and the potential of computing machines. Her comments seem visionary to the modern reader. Babbage called her the Enchantress of Numbers and the Princess of Parallelograms.

The print is in gold, purple and turquoise water-based block printing ink on mauve Japanese gampi paper 15.25 inches x 10.5 inches.

Babbage is writing to Michael Faraday about Ada Lovelace "that Enchantress who has thrown her magical spell around the most abstract of Sciences and has grasped it with a force which few masculine intellects (in our own country at least) could have exerted over it."

Seville was a Roman "colonia" since 45 BC. The important city was looted by the Vandals in 428 and developed into a Bishopric seat under Visigothic rule. After the Moors had defeated the Visigoths in the Battle of Guadalete, they conquered Seville and made it the capital of a province. Normans devastated Seville in 844 but Seville was rebuilt and flourished under the different Moorish dynasties. In 1248 Seville was conquered by the troops of Ferdinand III of Castile. The emigration of thousands of Moors to Northern Africa led to a decrease in economics in the whole area. Seville recovered in the 16th and 17th century when it became the hub of Spanish maritime trade. During this period, the port of Seville had a monopoly on overseas trade. Vespucci and Magellan planned and started their voyages here. As a result of the War of the Spanish Succession, in 1717 Seville lost the transatlantic trade monopoly to Cádiz.

The "Antigua Taberna de Las Escobas" dates back to 1386, making it the oldest establishment in Spain. The tavern is named after an old basket weaver, who made the brooms or "escobas" by hand.

People from all walks of life used to come to the Antigua Taberna de Las Escobas, including writers. It´s claimed that English poet Lord Byron, father of mathematician Ada Lovelace, was a guest here.

Visited the Bedlam Theatre today to see "Who Is Ada?". I may be a 'little' biased, but this is an absolutely beautiful and powerful piece of theatre. Take tissues.
