RKO_3803. How extraordinary is it to watch these beautiful and colorful little birds doing their diving act!

This male Common Kingfisher achieved its goal and had a wonderful, though relatively small, meal!

It was a challenge (and objective) to get some nice shots of the diving Kingfisher and I guess I too achieved my objectives.

Sieben kecke Schnirkelschnecken

saßen einst auf einem Stecken,

machten dort auf ihrem Sitze

kecke Schnirkelschneckenwitze.

Lachten alle so:

"Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho!"

Doch vor lauter Ho-ho-Lachen,

Schnirkelschneckenwitze-Machen,

fielen sie von ihrem Stecken:

alle sieben Schnirkelschnecken.

Liegen alle da.

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!

Thank you very much for all your nice visits, comments and favourites! ❤

The combination of golden light and wooden fencing helped to create a western look to this image. Add to that a white streak in the sky in the form of a cloud, and balance was achieved. I wanted to find the correct angle that would line up the fence with the ridge. That had me fumbling about while standing on an uneven drop off.

Alone on this ridge, there was plenty of time to work uninterrupted. Only the golden light served as my hour glass. Like the sands that would flow through the apex, light too would continue to change, until absent.

Getting up early in the morning long before sunrise can be well worth the effort – even in New England winter. I had this shot in mind for a while and the clouds looked quite right for what I wanted to achieve.

I made the photo just a few steps away from Copley Square in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. It shows an impressive 25 floor post-modern building on Boylston Street that reaches nearly 330 foot (100 meter) up into the sky.

My technique is alway the same:

Three exposures -2EV, 0, +2EV and then temperature adjustement using Lightroom and layering with luminosity mask using photoshop. Removal of distracting stuff with the stamp tool or patch tool. High pass filter to enhance details. Then saturation, contrast selectively control, dodge and burn where need...

DRI stand for Dynamic Range Increase. Three RAW files are used to achieve this. Rather than using a software like Photomatix for instance, I simply use mask to blend, my own way, the light, dark and normal shot with Photoshop and Lightroom.. To me, It looks more natural than the usual HDR treatment that I would normally applied.

Dodge and burn là où requis...

My GETTY IMAGES work

29-52

Achieved using in camera 2nd curtain flash (and a lot of patience!). Thanks to Colin for introducing this concept to me.

Now for something completely different. There are 3 ways to achieve vortex star trails though all require some sort of composite because otherwise the foreground is distorted.

1) In camera, yes it can be done. This requires that you build a device attached to a motor and gears to grab the zoom ring and make tiny changes to the zoom through a sequence of star field shots. Nobody sells such a device so only DIY. For me, no way, my mechanical abilities are zilch.

2) Take a sequence of star trail images over an hour or two and then in software shrink the image as each layer is added to duplicate the in camera zooming using either Photoshop actions or a script.

3) Take one image of a star field and again use software to duplicate and shrink to get the effect. For this image I went for number 3 using a Photoshop Script which can be downloaded free from liketheocean.com/night-photography/scripts-to-make-your-s...

To get my star field I used a single image taken for a standard star trails shot in nearby Arundel a few years ago. As there were not enough stars for the best effect I used copy of selections to a new image and cloning to get a denser star field and leave out the foreground. The script was run after selecting vortex. The foreground was taken in Lanzarote on a coach tour round the National Park where no other vehicles are allowed. The area shown in the image is appropriately enough called Tranquillity valley. The foreground was layered onto the star trails and combined using a layer mask and brush and a selection for precision

We saw the "Quiet Achiever" in our previous shot. It is a commercial fishing trawler that has returned to the dock after a night of work. This shot was taken from on board and it shows some impressive boats in the yard. We'll take a closer look at some of these in the next few days.

Goal achieved.

I have a friend at work that consistently teases me about "having goals." When I go to work tomorrow I can tell him.... MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.... GOAL ACHIEVED!!!

My goal for my trip back to The Scranton Lace Company (this time with legal access) was to find my way to the epic clock tower. Here's my proof... as directionally challenged as I am ... in a massive maze... two buildings, 288,000 square feet, covering 7.5 acres, I was able to find my way to the door and stairs and ladders leading into the clock tower, a city landmark in Scranton, PA. Surprisingly enough, I had a pretty good idea where it was from my last visit and once I found the auditorium, I pretty much knew where to go. I can't say that it wasn't scary, but it felt safe enough. I stopped there though. I didn't go into the bell tower above the clock tower. The clock tower has clock faces on all four sides, with one of them missing a quarter of the inner circle of the face, so that you can look out over the surrounding area, offering the reward of an awesome photo op! So, here it is.... my proof... Mission Accomplished.... Goal Achieved.... cross this one off the bucket list.

Scranton Lace, established in 1897 was once a world leader in the production of Nottingham Lace. Also, once a leading employer in the area, It has been abandoned since 2002, when the VP one day told the workers that they were closing their doors forever... "effective immediately." Currently there is a $51 million project to turn the building into apartments, offices, stores, restaurants, and a space dedicated to local artists to create and sell their work. Work is supposed to begin in 2017. Maybe there will be time for one more visit.... (and a climb to the bell tower?)

Fieldfare / turdus pilaris. Hassop, Derbyshire. 17/01/24.

'SLEEPY EYES.'

This is the same individual as shown previously, but up in the top of the Hawthorn tree. It was enjoying some gorgeous late afternoon sunshine and could barely keep its eyes open!

The Fieldfare seemed to expend a great deal of energy in trying to guard the berries from all comers. Whilst it achieved moderate success with odd Blackbirds and Redwings, Waxwings rarely shifted. An example of strength in numbers.

For the people who were wondering, why I wasn't taking pictures anymore...

I was very busy in the last 3 months with the writing of my phD-Thesis.

Today I finally submitted it!

Now I have to prepare my disputation...

and in 6 weeks from now it will be the end :) !

I am really happy with the level of transparency achieved on this one. Shooting rocks and water, registering its movements trying to achieve different levels of transparency, can be very relaxing and super addictive. These days, i seem to come home with tons of shots from a bunch of rocks, water, and different compositions around these subjects. However, a very peaceful mind with tons of positive energy is also a great result from these exercises. It's like going to yoga! You should try, it's a wonderful therapy for a stressful life. :)

I love purple coneflowers so much, my husband went out and bought some to plant in our garden earlier this summer. They are so pretty...and I enjoy photographing them as well. Hope you enjoy!

What is my favourite image for August of last year? - wp.me/p31YwA-ri

An Opel Ascona 400 (?) in the rain at the Klassikertreffen 2024 in Rüsselsheim. I'm not sure whether I even knew it was a cigarette brand, but the name Rothman sure looked familiar to me in the 80's.

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves and comments, they are always appreciated :)

All this (!!!) to -at least- achieve the most lifelike photo I ever made of this painting.

See the first version (soul-less) here.

Apart the usual cropping and color correcting the result is straight out of the camera.

Do you think I should explore it further or stick with the light?

goals i'd like to achieve

1. pass my ap world history test on may 15th , 08

2. get a job! please :)

3. expand my creativity in photography, writing, and other kinds of art

4. increase my self confidence!

5. Become careless of those who I shouldn't care about.

6. Find someone who will care about me just as much as I care about them.

7. Travel. I've always wanted to go out of the states. Somewhere like Liverpool, and Paris. Sounds so fantastic, I just want to pick up my bags and go! Why can't I ? :(

8. Create myself.

Pixie doesn't go outside much these days. But she asked to go out and she nibbled a few grasses before heading back, but the cool concrete and the warm sunshine were calling her, so she succumbed. And purred for a half an hour.

Took my DIY flash diffuser out for a test-run today. Very happy with the soft lighting I was able to achieve.

For 40+ years, I've wanted to photograph a northbound UP train on the old Provo Main between Lakota Junction and Pleasant Grove. Specifically, a morning train at or near the Summer Solstice when the sun shines in the north for optimum lighting. My goal was achieved on Friday, June 16, 2023 when the LUL41 local departed Provo Yard early, and marched up the Provo Industrial Lead by 9:00 a.m. They had a sizable train, too with 18 cars. Pictured, the 41 is crossing Center Street in Orem, Utah. Decades ago, a short set out track stood here named "Vineyard" in the timetable, likely for sugar beet loading. The thistle plants were a welcome addition.

Charlecote Park (grid reference SP263564) is a grand 16th century country house, surrounded by its own deer park, on the banks of the River Avon near Wellesbourne, about 4 miles (6 km) east of Stratford-upon-Avon and 5.5 miles (9 km) south of Warwick, Warwickshire, England. It has been administered by the National Trust since 1946 and is open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building. The Lucy family has owned the land since 1247. Charlecote Park was built in 1558 by Sir Thomas Lucy, and Queen Elizabeth I stayed in the room that is now the drawing room. Although the general outline of the Elizabethan house remains, nowadays it is in fact mostly Victorian. Successive generations of the Lucy family had modified Charlecote Park over the centuries, but in 1823, George Hammond Lucy (High Sheriff of Warwickshire in 1831) inherited the house and set about recreating the house in its original style. In the middle of the 19th century the Fairfax Baronets inherited the property when the male line of the Lucy family failed on the death of Henry Spencer Lucy. The baronets changed their family name to Lucy to reflect the traditions of Charlecote. The Great Hall has a barrel-vaulted ceiling made of plaster painted to look like timber and is a fine setting for the splendid collection of family portraits. Other rooms have richly coloured wallpaper, decorated plaster ceilings and wood panelling. There are magnificent pieces of furniture and fine works of art, including a contemporary painting of Queen Elizabeth I. The original two-storey Elizabethan gatehouse that guards the approach to the house remains unaltered. Charlecote Park covers 185 acres (75 ha), backing on to the River Avon. William Shakespeare has been alleged to have poached rabbits and deer in the park as a young man and been brought before magistrates as a result. But it is unclear whether there were any deer in the park at that time. It was landscaped by Capability Brown in about 1760. In the Tudor great hall, the 1680 painting Charlecote Park by Sir Godfrey Kneller, is said to be one of the earliest depictions of a black presence in the West Midlands. The painting, of Captain Thomas Lucy, shows a black boy in the background dressed in a blue livery coat and red stockings and wearing a gleaming, metal collar around his neck. The National Trust's Charlecote brochure describes the boy as a "black page boy". In 1735 a black child called Philip Lucy was baptised at Charlecote. On display at the house is an original letter from Oliver Cromwell, dated 1654, summoning then owner Richard Lucy to the Barebone's Parliament. Also on display is a 1760 portrait of George Lucy by Thomas Gainsborough which cost Lucy the sum of eight guineas. A set of archives for the Lucy family at Charlecote is held by the Warwickshire County Record Office The house also has a display of carriages and a period laundry and brewroom. In April 2012 Charlecote Park featured as the venue for BBC1's Antiques Roadshow.
