The Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, a UNESCO world heritage site.

When you write and say about this temple, usually cite the words of Igor Grabar, "the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl near Vladimir is not only the most perfect temple, created in Russia, but also one of the greatest monuments of world art".

The temple was erected in one year in 1165 by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky.

In the days of his "youth" the temple looked different, and the hill-a pedestal, is the work of human hands.

The underground part of the temple is 5,30 m . At the mouth of the Nerl rose artificial hill, which has become the pedestal for the Church of the Intercession and protect it from the treacherous waters of the spring. The hill was covered with a shell of white stone slabs with gutters and stairs leading down to the Marina.

The proportions of the temple are unusually graceful and beautiful. Often this temple is compared with the image of maiden Here everything is directed on achieving maximal effect of slenderness and height. Many parts, subtle, very delicate, emphasize the vertical axis of the construction.

RKO_3803. How extraordinary is it to watch these beautiful and colorful little birds doing their diving act!

This male Common Kingfisher achieved its goal and had a wonderful, though relatively small, meal!

It was a challenge (and objective) to get some nice shots of the diving Kingfisher and I guess I too achieved my objectives.

The main designers of this terrific ice sculpture at the hydroelectric power plant Niezelgrund are water drops, coldness and time. One drop alone wouldn't have effected anything here, without the other components. But the combination of these three elements were capable to creat this fugacious masterpiece.

For me this is the perfect symbol for live and the wish to achieve ore to create something. Yes, often the right circumstances are needed, but they alone are effecting nothing yet. Only with the permanent effort for my task, the passion of sustaining and proceeding, even if I can see barely any results at the beginning, make it possible for me to create something really extraordinary. And if finaly I'm the only one who is able to see, what extraordinary means, it still was worth it.

The Nankeen Kestrel is one of the smallest falcons in the world. About the size of a pigeon. The only birds of prey capable of hovering.

It’s also one of just two types of raptor in the country to hunt using suspension – not speed.

Instead of beating their wings at hyperspeed like hummingbirds, kestrels face into the wind, and use its power to hold them in place as they scout. They are able to achieve this by developing stiffer feathers to withstand bending than other falcons.

I took this image at Winton Wetlands where the sun caught the wing feathers, making them shine like copper. I am lucky enough to have them around where I live due to the presence of remnant grasslands so regularly get to see them hunt and hover.

Tranquility can only be achieved through the tedious act of balancing on a single leg. Trust me, the heron told me.

Taken for the Macro Mondays theme of 'mesh'

I used the upper disc metal frame (with the holes) and the mesh of a cafetière for this photograph.

I rested them against a bottle of orange liquid hand wash illuminated on the windowsill to achieve this image.

A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others

“One cannot be pessimistic about the West. This is the native home of hope. When it fully learns that cooperation, not rugged individualism, is the quality that most characterizes and preserves it, then it will have achieved itself and outlived its origins. Then it has a chance to create a society to match its scenery.”

Thanks

Not sure about this, definitely not the best composition/focus I've ever achieved - but I like the light and texture of the moss - so decided to upload and see what you think!!

Very difficult to do this assembly.

Like all my previous arrangements; the shots were not made in order to achieve a mounting (therefore angle shooting and varifocal).

But I wanted to drop on Flickr without repeating myself.

Thank you for your visits and good weekend.

Havinng a splashing time celebrating my umpteenth bath day in the company of my eldest granddaughter, back in 2004. Of course there were no masks in those "happy days".

Tip of the day :

In order to achieve this astonishing effect, you’ll need an olympic-size bathtub with loads of suds (or snow if you're into¹ snow bathing) and you’ll also need a beautiful granddaughter! Now if you happen to be a beautiful granddaughter, then you may be looking for a granddad but, not to worry, they’re two a penny² these days.

The picture was taken by her father who was 'filling the gap', so to speak! I just titivated it a bit and called it mine; so it's not exactly a selfie but every bit as good as. It is therefore signed Kittymax & Son, he took the photo and I salvaged it but don't tell him I said that for heaven's sake!

Zoom right in, on full screen, but don't fall in!

Scroll down the page a little to see the original, patriotic version: Red, White ans Blue! Perhaps a little too patriotic; hence the B&W.

Take great care and many, many thanks for calling,

One of my railfan goals after moving to northwestern Indiana in October of 2022 was to shoot an NS grain train passing the 1920's era coal tower at Michigan City. In January this year I was able to mark that item off the list. It was gloomy, but there was enough light to get a good chase of about 30 miles in.

1955 Nash Ambassador Country Club.

After Nash rolled out its Airflyte body style, Ambassador sales enjoyed a significant gain by selling just four- and two-door sedans in the 1949-1951 marketplace. They were manufactured at the Nash Factory (Kenosha, WI), and the Nash Factory (El Segundo, CA).

Airflyte styling entered its final season with the heavily facelifted 1955 versions, created under the direction of Edmund E. Anderson. "Scenaramic" wrap-around windshields accompanied an entirely new front-end treatment with a new oval grille incorporating the headlights. The front fenders featured raised front wheel arches that showed more of the front wheel and tire than Nash had revealed since the 1949 models debuted.

Ambassadors were now available with a V8 engine for the first time. The engine was supplied by Packard as part of George W. Mason's vision to have Packard join AMC to help achieve the economies of scale of the domestic Big Three automakers. The 320 cu in (5.2 L) V8 produced 120 hp (89 kW; 122 PS) and mated to Packard's Ultramatic automatic transmission.

All life is inherently broken from the start, Percival. Take solace in that. There is no perfection in life. Otherwise, what would be the purpose of death? It's to try to find ways to better yourself before the end that gives us purpose. You are all broken, but also understand - mortals can achieve great things.

---------------------------

The work "Comedian" by the Italian Maurizio Cattelan, a banana attached to a wall with adhesive tape, was sold at an auction in New York on November 20, 2024 for 6.2 million dollars. Five years ago the work was for sale for $120,000. Cattelan's work sparked controversy at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019 and raised questions about whether it could be considered art - which is exactly what the artist said he wanted to achieve. [Source: ntv.de]

It is important to know that the person who purchases the work of art does not receive the banana itself, but a certificate of authenticity that gives the owner permission and authority to place a banana with this type of tape on his wall as an original work of art by Maurizio Cattelan to reproduce.

My "Taped Banana" can be purchased significantly cheaper in a strictly limited edition of 66 prints. The banana isn't peeled yet [German idiom for “it’s not too late”]. 😂

Achieving the first draft of the human genome took more than a decade. Currently, your genome can be read in just one day.

What is it useful for us? Well, among other things, it allows us to study which genes develop cancer or rare diseases and look for specific therapies. Assess how a therapy will go, that is, individualize the treatments. Also non-invasive prenatal studies. Like everything, it will have other less ethical applications, but that is the struggle of human beings in the face of advances: Achieving a balance with nature with them.

This beauty of a species, considered in the past as the "bird of ill omen", is today the complete opposite. We will make this known in the text that is being edited, called MYTHS AND LEGENDS OF BIRDS, The new paradigm, which will be available to bird lovers very soon.

We have achieved the photograph thanks to the invitation to their home, made by our friend Antonio Upegui and his wife. For them, my public recognition and thank you very much.

I have finally finished my course and would like to share my final submissions with you. This is the first inspired by Andy Warhol.

1.Fifteen.

“In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”

(Andy Warhol)

In today’s world of social media platforms, people are searching for their 15 minutes of fame. Celebrities seem to be the new gods. They are lauded and applauded. They are made larger than life and are given the gloss of perfection.

I chose to create a pop art photo of a singer song writer who could have achieved his 15 minutes of fame. I thought that by using vibrant colours and the same image, on vibrantly coloured backgrounds and applying different blendes, I could create a shot suggestive of the exaltation given to celebrities.

After L134 passed we'd achieved our goal but a quick check revealed there was another train not too far off so we hung around for it, our 7th here at Doswell and 17th of a fabuloud day, before heading down to Richmond town for some fabulous food and adult beverages. Amtrak regional train 95 from Boston to Norfolk slams south over the Buckingham Branch diamonds on Main 3 of CSXT's RF&P Sub at about MP CFP21.7. The train is framed between HN tower at right which was built in 1929 and has been closed since 1958 and the passenger station at left built in 1927 and now home to BB offices.

The phrase "shock and awe" originally referred to a military strategy designed to achieve rapid dominance over an enemy by using overwhelming force and firepower to psychologically paralyse them, effectively destroying their will to fight through a sudden and spectacular display of power; this concept was first outlined by American strategic analysts Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade in a 1996 Pentagon briefing document, gaining wider public attention during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

De syv søstre or The Seven Sisters is a mountain range on the island of Alsten in Alstahaug Municipality in Nordland county, Norway.

The mountain range consists of seven peaks on the southeastern half of the island. The mountains are (listed from northeast to southwest):

Panel 1: Botnkrona (3,517 ft), Grytfoten (3,343 ft) and Skjæringen (3,402 ft),

Panel 2: Skjæringen (3,402 ft) and Tvillingene ("the twins") (3,220 ft for the taller one and 3,100 ft for the shorter one),

Panel 3: Tvillingene ("the twins") (3,220 ft for the taller one and 3,100 ft for the shorter one) and Kvasstinden (3,310 ft), and

Panel 4: Kvasstinden (3,310 ft) and Breitinden (2,990 ft)

A good view of the mountain range can be achieved traveling by sea in the "Hurtigruten", as it passes the full length of the range.

One of my birthday presents from December was a small film scanner so I have been revisiting old shots I made in high school but never bothered to print as it wasn't required by an assignment or the yearbook (or I was too cheap to pay for paper and the chemicals). So have been finding some fun memories.

Here was our cat, Chester, peering through the chair at the desk dad had built. Magazines, books, and a cassette player (that I would use to make mix tapes with and record songs from the radio). Not quite sure how this look was achieved but it sure seems to be some sort of double exposure.

Anna was very cheerfull. Thats the way she is.

Most of the time she was laughing during the shoot. Before the shoot, when we first met, she said " why are your photos so dark and depressive? " . Well, I tried to explain.

I thought that she would not understand, but she did. She understood perfectly what I wanted to achieve. And, finally she also understood the answer to her own question.

KERAMEIKOS - ΚΕΡΑΜΕΙΚΟΣ

The ancient Kerameikos, a region occupied by potters, as it's name suggests, was on the north-west fringes of ancient Athens and extended both inside and outside the walls that now traverse the site of the excavations. Two gates, the Dipylon and the Sacred Gate, connected the "inner" with the "outer" Kerameikos. The area around these gates was the most ancient and largest cemetery known in Attica.

Sitting on the window-sill and enjoying the low afternoon sun. Illuminated and in sharp focus is the "good" eye, the one I use for photography. The other one plays second fiddle. However, none of them was really involved in taking this self-portrait. It was the artificial eye of the camera in connection with a clever algorithm (automatic eye recognition) that kicked in when I pressed the shutter release (via a long cable). This is one of the situations where camera technology enables me to do things with ease that, if done manually, would have been quite difficult to achieve.

House of Culture , Helsinki – architect Alvar Aalto, 1955 to 1958

The House of Culture in Helsinki is Aalto in his 'red brick period'. He achieves the free-form curves of the concert hall walls using wedge-shaped bricks, arranged variously with their shorter edge facing inside or outside the wall. The impact of the solid brick walls must be seen in the context of what had gone before. In Finland, the National-Romantics had used wood and granite to show closeness to Finnish nature, while the modern movement, as elsewhere, used more abstract white plaster surfaces, which did not wear well particularly in the Finnish climate. Aalto's red brick was therefore a bigger statement than it now seems: a man-made material that keeps its individuality and local personality. The House of Culture combines a concert hall in curved red brick, an office building, a conventional rectangle in form, but with a visually striking facade brought alive by greening copper, and a lecture-theatre block connecting the two.

The House of Culture (Kulttuuritalo) serves as a centre for the cultural work of various trade-union organizations. The office part has five storey’s with 110 offices, meeting rooms and two flats. In the lecture and conference room section, in the middle of the U-shaped complex, are a lecture hall, study rooms, discussion rooms, a library and a records room. The concert and congress hall is the main feature of the group. The hall, with 1500 seats and a stage 200 sq m, is primarily intended for concerts, but is also used for lectures. The various parts of the building are linked together along the street by a canopy 60m long, under which are the main entrances. The free asymmetrical form of the hall entailed the development of a new facing element, a wedge-shaped brick, with which all the curves of the irregular exterior could be realized.

The office wing is dressed in the iconography of a modernist office block, the theatre is crowned with the copper pitch roof of the traditional civic monument, while the porch oscillates between being a private entry or a public arcade.
