At the weekend we had high visitors in our garden. A group of admirals sat down on the overripe fruits of our honeysuckle to fortify themselves with the (probably) very sweet juice of the berries. Unfortunately they were too shy to let me photograph the open wings.
Since they first appeared this year and then too numerous (at least 4 at a time) I think they are preparing for their journey.
Admirals are migratory butterflies that fly over the Alps to southern Europe and sometimes even as far as Africa in autumn, at least 1,500 to 2,500 km, to spend the winter there. An overwhelming achievement for such a delicate creature. So I'm happy to provide them with a refueling station.

In celebration of man's modern achievement. During Earth Hour 2009, I turned on every light in my house. Both of my cars are idle. A ball of 6 strains of 100 professional outdoor Christmas lights hooked together with 6 balls of 100 lights each surrounding it. To top it off, a 600 watt halogen light pointing at the front door.
Sorry, it isn't as good as I want. I should have exposed another .5 or 1 stop.
This, too, is a Valentine's Day trip a few years back. It was such a beautiful day, and surprisingly mild for February. Glad we were able to enjoy the beach for Valentine's! Hope you enjoy as well!

I keep hearing some international travelers condemn Tokyo Tower because it's largely a copy of the Eiffel Tower. Photo Wise, I'd wager Tokyo Tower is by far the better of the two. I mean, the Eiffel Tower is really only ever shot from the front cause there aren't a whole lot of good compositions, but with the Tokyo Tower you could shoot it from almost any position and get a good shot. The grounds are far more vivid and detailed.
When I was in Japan I actually went out to shoot the tower on multiple nights, primarily because my second time around I was accommodated just a few blocks away. There wasn't a whole lot of leeway because apparently they turn the lights off at midnight (and I had other night shoots to get to).
The plan was to shoot inside the stairway tunnel, which is a more well known shot then I thought cause there was a literal LINE just to get it. That instantly spoke to me saying it just was not worth it (and the guy who was down there when I arrived was taking his own sweet time) so I circled the perimeter of the park a few times before I found this walkway to the northeast, and it was just perfect.
This is one of the better shots I got in Tokyo, the composition could not have been better, and there wasn't a line for this one. In the editing process I saw quite a bit of noise in the sky still, and there was also a bit of construction material down the middle of the walkway which I went to great lengths to get rid of (redrew the tile lines myself) and the lamps leading to the tower were impeccably placed. So my advice to other photographers, don't try to get the same angle and composition that you've seen other people do, you could shoot the Tokyo Tower from almost ANY angle and make it look amazing. Be willing to think outside the box a bit.
The Gloster Gamecock biplane first flew in 1925 and was the RAF’s last wooden fighter, serving with several front-line squadrons. No complete Gamecock survives. The Jet Age Museum’s reproduction Gamecock has been finished as J7904, of 43 Squadron as flown by the Squadron Commander in the late 1920s, complete with black-and-white chequers on the rear fuselage spine.
Rear fuselage sections of two Finnish-built Gamecocks survive in museums in Finland, but apart from a handful of components that is all. The reproduction is a remarkable achievement because hardly any original Gamecock drawings have survived either. The few original drawings available were for the Finnish version, widely differing from the RAF version and with all captions in Finnish.
Boom. After 8 years of missed opportunities, being in the wrong location, being at work, being away, I finally have captured a full on shelf cloud. A monster storm with so many lightning strikes, a dozen captured with my Pluto trigger including this one. #sydneystorms D810 & 14-24mm with Pluto trigger.
After a nice meal out with the family, drove along the sea front and stopped at 3 beaches. We were at each beach for only 5 minutes but managed to take lots of sky pics.
It was quite an achievement to get these bowls to cooperate and not break for this shot! New treat bowls for summer!
The Panthéon (Latin: Pantheon,[1] from Greek Πάνθειον meaning "Every god") is a building in the Latin Quarter in Paris. It was originally built as a church dedicated to St. Genevieve and to house the reliquary châsse containing her relics but, after many changes, now functions as a secular mausoleum containing the remains of distinguished French citizens. It is an early example of neoclassicism, with a façade modeled on the Pantheon in Rome, surmounted by a dome that owes some of its character to Bramante's "Tempietto". Located in the 5th arrondissement on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, the Panthéon looks out over all of Paris. Designer Jacques-Germain Soufflot had the intention of combining the lightness and brightness of the gothic cathedral with classical principles, but its role as a mausoleum required the great Gothic windows to be blocked. Nevertheless, it is one of the most important architectural achievements of its time and the first great neoclassical monument.

Developed during World War II for the U.S. Navy, the Douglas AD Skyraider almost disappeared before having the chance to excel during the Vietnam War, where the aircraft proved well suited for close air support (CAS) to ground forces.
Nevertheless support of search and rescue (SAR) missions had been the Skyraider’s crowning achievement during the conflict. In fact it became dramatically apparent early in the war that lone helicopters were too vulnerable to conduct combat search and rescue (CSAR) missions. For this reason in 1965 a SAR task force decided that rescue helicopters would work in pairs, and that Skyraiders would provide rescue escort.
The callsign “Sandy” was founded in late 1965 by Capt. J.W. “Doc” George during an A-1 replacement flight to one of the several A-1 groups that rotated through Udorn. Actually it was George’s Bine Hoa departure callsign. After having landed at Udorn he was asked what call sign he would like to use while there. George answer was “Sandy.” Not only the callsign was retained by George’s replacement, but also became the callsign of any Skyraider assigned the SAR mission.
This Skyraider was built in California in 1951 with the c/n 7802 and after the US Navy serial number 127002.
In 1961, he was first assigned to the 3/20 "Oranie" Fighter Squadron with the callsign 20-FP then to the 1/21 Support Aircraft Squadron with the callsign 21-LN and finally to EAA 2/21 “Oranie” with callsign 21-ZH.
