Laika went on a hike around Garrison, NY which is 1.5 hour away from New York City. It's a relatively easy trail and Laika enjoyed running back and forth on the trail because her humans are not walking fast enough. Here she is posing by a small bridge waiting for her humans to catch up.

The East Entrance Road curves around the base of Lake Butte as it approaches the shores of Yellowstone Lake. A wildfire in 2003 burned the forest in the Lake Butte area which accounts for the burned trees at the bend in the road.

This, too, is from our own personal garden. It's my husband that has the green thumb! He just loves making his garden just shine! These Clematis were so big and beautiful, I couldn't resist grabbing a few pics! Hope you enjoy!

I figured with this being upload number 1000 to my Flickr account, it should be a personal favourite.

This was my first shot of my first trip to Montana. I was solo and had a good old fashioned paper map and some print outs of other peoples shots from the web. After driving down from Saskatchewan and spending the night in East Glacier the next morning I awoke to a perfectly clear sky. Although this spot was just a few minutes from the motel, I wound up missing a perfectly lit eastbound by seconds. Instinctively I wanted to chase it, but that would have meant leaving this fabulous spot and who knows, maybe there would be another one right behind it.... Less than ten minutes later this grain empty popped into view and set against snow capped mountains, frosted evergreens, fall foliage and lifting morning fog I took my first and possibly favourite Montana photo.

I quite enjoy the little hub of railroad photography that has come to exist on Flickr and the daily dose of fresh photos it gives all of us. Maybe I'll start digging around for another favourite for upload 2000.

This picture of the Canale Grande, Venice, was taken in early August 2007 as a panorama consisting of 11 frames. When I rediscovered the files, I thought, some new Photoshop processing techniques I didn't know back then might help the files to become a nice picture.

This is yet another Queen Anne style home, much like the first one I posted. Although this one is quite a bit larger by 500 square feet, (it has fewer bedrooms); it, too, has many of the same similarities. It is located in the historic district also, only about a block or two away from the previous one.

Fun to compare similarities! Hope you all enjoy!

Olá amigos, com o dólar na estratosfera aqui no Brasil, e depois de 6 anos, não consegui renovar minha PRO. E eles vão apagar minhas fotos!! Uma vergonha!

Hi friends, with the dollar in the stratosphere here in Brazil, and after 6 years, I haven't been able to renew my PRO. And they're going to delete my photos!! What a shame!

Very pretty, and by all accounts blessed with a lovely aroma - only I can't smell it.

More wabi-sabi, and yet another tulip; there appears to be no end to these tulips, as I've got another dozed or so in this batch, and two more batches coming up right behind them!

What I like here is the way the petals seem to almost swirl around the curving stem, as if it were doing the twist, pointing to the two top corners, and those blue "eyes" in the pistils.

The result of a multi-image focus stack, this image should reward pretty close examination. Maximum viewing size on your computer can be found by opening the image in a separate window, making that window maximum size, typing the letter "L" on the keyboard, and then clicking the cursor as long as a '+' appears in it, typically twice.

If you find this image to your liking, you can find more wabi-sabi - and an account of my understanding of the meaning of that term - in my wabi-sabi album, more tulips in my Tulips album, and more dancing flowers in my Tiny Dancers album.

BTW, I've taken to putting a white rim around these images on black because, on my iPhone flickr app, it is otherwise difficult to discern the image's edges. I made it tiny because, while large mats look lovely on my desktop monitor, they make it hard for my tired old eyes to view an image on my iPhone's small screen.

Photo taken on our trip to Loire Valley in France. The Château de Chenonceau was dog friendly and she was able to walk around the beautiful gardens and was able to be carried inside the castle. It also had the maze garden that Laika had fun running around in circles.

Many people associate lions with the grasslands of the Masai Mara or Serengeti. While those areas are great for seeing lions, there are also other environments where they can be seen. This image was captured in the Chobe National Park, Botswana during an extended drought in August 24.

This beautiful rare flower is the wild Pyramidal Orchid { Anacramptis pyramidalis } and it grows on dry grassland, chalk downs and stabilised sand dunes.I was lucky to spot it yesterday growing on the side of the road as it was the profusion of yellowish foamy flower around it, that attracted my view. They are called Ladies Bedstraw { Galium verum } and they smells like new mown hay. It was once used for stuffing mattress`s and the term ladies is said to refer to Queen Elizabeth 1st who it is said had her mattress`s stuffed with it. By all accounts its the closest she actually got to an actual stuffing though Ive heard rumours!!!!! Lol

So an ordinary simple little no frills pic with a nice little tale.

The best ones really!

Right, anybody fancy a roll in the grass? For Heavens sake will ya mind the Orchid!!!!

Do hope you will favour my photo.

P@t.

Update;

Im amazed how popular this simple photo is. I didnt take any trouble with it in the least. I was passing by on the opposite side of the road and I just went over and took 3 pics. I removed a few blades of strawy grass first that were in the way. I was going to use a macro lens but I didnt bother.

Im passing by there again this evening so Ill have a look. I doubt if any more will come up as the do grow singly and are extremely fussy about soil conditions.I think its the simplicity of it that makes it and of course the grass and the foil of yellow flowers definitely add to it.

I do want to thank all of you for all your faves and wonderful words which inspire me greatly!

Hugs,

P@t.

I went out to Donabate on Tuesday 4th July to look for some more Orchids. I must have walked 10 miles but I was well rewarded as I found one area where there were about 20 in all and they were in varying shades of purple. Perhaps the colour has to do with soil ph. I will put up a collage of them and I think Ill print a few as well. If anyone wants a copy, let me know.

Catch you all soon, P@t.

I saw a 1cm-long black fly land on a leaf and thought "That won't male much of a photo". Then I remembered that you can discover all sorts of wonderful colours you can't see with the naked eye when you look through a macro lens. Wow, it's not "just" a black fly! I've no idea what species it is but I definitely didn't see all those colours through my own eyes. Cropped from 3:2 ratio to 4:3 maintaining the height of the original photo. Taken using the pop-up flash - a rare event for me - set to 1/32 power, with diffuser, on account of the thick overhead cloud.

STOP PRESS: I've just ID-d this as an Orange-bearded bluebottle; what a name!

Pingmen or Ping Gate, Suzhou

Due to the account capacity constraints, this account will cease to be updated after 28 June, 2024.

I'm sorry to tell you friends that my new account (www.flickr.com/photos/runen3) was instantly cancelled just as I posted my first photo. I have written to enquire as to the cause. There is little hope of a resolution though. Maybe I will say goodbye to Flickr forever.

Good luck to all of you!

This city gate is called "Pingmen" or "Ping Gate", located in the northwest of the old city of Suzhou. The gate is said to have existed 2,500 years ago, but was blocked until 1928, when it was reconstituted to facilitate the traffic of the nearby railway station outside the city. Then in 1958, when all the walls of the city of Suzhou were demolished, the gate of course ceased to exist.

However, in 2011-2012, the Suzhou municipal authorities rebuilt a section of the city wall at the location of the gate, directly south of the Suzhou railway station, with three arches on the wall, known as the "Ping Gate", and built on top of the wall above the gate an pseudo-ancient city tower, which had never existed at the Pingmen before 1958.

I've already written a lengthy account of my visit to Kynance Cove last weekend. You probably don't want to hear any more about it, but there's always another tale somewhere if I can just drag it out of this keyboard on a Friday evening at the end of another long week at the swamp.

Some of you will have read stories on this page of the adventures and misadventures of a wide angle lens that came into my possession in the spring of 2019. I won't go over those again - no need to overuse a well worn saga. Recently I resolved to revive its fortunes because it had lain unused in my spare bag for several months. I was worried that it might start to show signs of neglect, and it had also occurred to me that there may have been a reason why I'd purchased it in the first place. So one evening I resolved to address the situation, deliberately leaving the other lenses at home and took it to Gwithian, where we had a very enjoyable evening together (or at least we did until a large party invaded my space along with an over enthusiastic dog, whose name I learned in full Sensurround more than once was Spencer). If a lens were some form of sentient being it might have felt like one of your children does when you take them somewhere special on their own. Not that I've ever done anything like that or I'd have still been hearing about it twenty years later. My daughter still complains about her brother having a Penguin biscuit when for some unremembered reason she missed out on one. This happened in 1996 by the way.

So that was it. I'd made my point and used the lens and made some shots that I was happy enough with. One of them I shared with you three or four weeks ago, although when I remember the heat of the afternoon that day it seems a lot longer. Now I could stuff the lens back into its bag like the lone occupant of an empty old manor house and everything would return to normal. Except that the lens stayed on the camera. This was partly because I'd forgotten just how sharp it could make an image from back to front, and partly because it just happened that in a couple of subsequent outings it was the only one which was going to swallow the entire composition that I had in mind. Last Saturday at Kynance was one of those days, and this view over the sea stacks could only work if I had some foreground in the composition. For that I needed to zoom out to 16mm.

Standing among this outcrop high on the cliff I moved the tripod about by small degrees, a couple of inches to the left, half a step backwards, trying very slightly different placings and then making a focus stack. Ultimately the ever changing sky decided which version I'd share with you and all of the small and subtle foreground changes became irrelevant.

So now the lens is back where it belongs. There it sits in front of me in the main bag, adding to my options and so also by default my confusion levels as I head out towards the great wherever with that sense of anticipation that makes us all what we are. Tomorrow I have a plan. I want to try and do a better job of an image I took in the summer. Wish me luck. I love having a plan and I love not knowing what adventures tomorrow will bring. Have a great weekend everyone, and remember to dust off that forgotten piece of kit you paid all that money for and have left unused. You won't regret it.

Couldn't take enough pictures of this place, it was so atmospheric!

6 year old Thoroughbred broodmare. Take a look at her pedigree and you'll see that her female line traces back to the most influential broodmare of the 20th century, La Troienne:

www.pedigreequery.com/brokerage+account

From Wikipedia...

"She produced fourteen foals and 12 of them raced. 10 of those 12 were winners. The first of these was the Champion Black Helen, by Black Toney, born in 1932. Black Helen won the American Derby, the Florida Derby, the Maryland Handicap, and the Coaching Club American Oaks. The second was born in 1934, Biologist, by Bubbling Over who won the 1926 Kentucky Derby. The third was Baby League, born in 1935, again by Bubbling Over, who became the dam of four stakes winners: the great Hall of Fame filly Busher, as well as Mr. Busher, Striking, and Harmonizing. Her fourth winning foal was Big Hurry, another Black Toney filly, born in 1936, and the dam of five stakes winners: Be Fearless, Bridal Flower, The Admiral, Great Captain, and Searching. La Troienne also brought forth the great Hall of Fame colt Bimelech, born in 1937. By Black Toney, Bimlech won the Belmont Stakes, the Preakness Stakes, and placed in the 1940 Kentucky Derby. Big Event came next in 1938, a Blue Larkspur filly and dam of stakes winner Hall of Fame. In 1939, she dropped Businesslike who was the dam of two stakes winners: Busanda (who was the dam of Buckpasser) and Auditing. Then came Besieged by Balladier in 1940, Broke Even in 1941, a colt by Blue Larkspur, Back Yard in 1942, a gelding by Balladier, and in 1944 Bee Ann Mac by Blue Larkspur. Belle Histoire came along in 1945, once more by Blue Larkspur. Belle Histoire was the dam of stakes winner Royal Record. La Troienne's last two foals were Belle of Troy in 1947, again by Blue Larkspur, and the gelding Trojan War in 1948 by Shut Out.

Les Brinsfield, a pedigree expert, wrote: "Anyone who wants can take any daughter of La Troienne (or all of them) and trace them through pedigrees to today's stars. It will be a rare week when there is no stakes winner linebred to La Troienne.""

www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/LaTroienne.html

Donald Mitchell Healey (DMH to friends and fans) was, by all accounts, one of the truly great characters of the motor industry. A pilot in World War I, DMH took to motor racing and rally in the '20s. By the mid-1930s he was designing and driving rally cars for Triumph, and won several important international events. When war broke out in 1939, he devoted himself to the war efforts.

At the conclusion of hostilities, DMH and family (especially his sons, Geoff and Bic) resumed making sports cars, this time under the Healey name. Their first effort, the Healey Silverstone, had an advanced chassis design and simple, aerodynamic bodywork. Lacking the resources (spelled "cash") to develop their own engines, the Healeys used the interesting and reasonably sporting Riley 2-liter twin-cam OHV engine. (Yes, you read that right: two cams, down in the block, each operating a separate bank of pushrods working the rockers of overhead valves.)

But like all racers, DMH wanted more power. The biggest news in the motoring world in those days was the 165-bhp Cadillac OHV V8, a comparatively light-weight and high-revving engine with great low-end torque and tremendous potential for making a light, good-handling chassis go very fast. DMH built at least one prototype, using a privately purchased Cadillac V8, which fitted nicely into the Silverstone chassis. (I have been fortunate enough to see this car. And again, that's not "one of these cars," it's "this one.")

So DMH took a steamship from England to the U.S., intending to strike a deal with Cadillac for several V8 engines.

On the way he met George Romney, president of the Nash Motor Corporation based in Kenosha, Wisconsin. George and DMH hit it off from the start, and Romney said that if things didn't go according to plan, he should look him up.

Well, Cadillac didn't give DMH the time of day—too busy (and too important) to sell motors to some tinkerer. DMH decided that rather than make the trip a total loss, he should look into the Nash connection.

Well, Romney was as good as his word, and a deal was struck not only for engines, but for some development of a sports-racing car. The Nash-Healey ended up taking 3rd overall (behind two Mercedes 300SLs) at the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans—an amazing achievement for a six-cylinder pushrod block, in spite of Nash's disappointment at not winning against the highly developed twin-cam racing engines.

The final piece in the puzzle was the acquisition of bodywork from Pininfarina, Italy's premiere coachbuilder at the time (and my own Pininfarina car is at my elbow, urging me to delete "at the time").

500 Nash-Healeys were built, in coupe form as shown here but more popularly in a roadster. The five cars shown at Forest Grove therefore represent one percent of all Nash-Healey production; no one at the concours knew how many still remain.

Classic film buffs may recall the original Sabrina, with Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn, and William Holden. Bogart is the sober-sided chairman of the board of a wealthy family's financial institution, and younger brother Holden is the fast-living cad who romances Hepburn. The car in which Holden drives her home from the train station is a Nash-Healey roadster.

Oh, and about that title: In 1959, DMH tried again to secure V8 power for his sports cars, and once more crossed the Atlantic, this time to meet with his longtime friend and fellow racer Carroll Shelby (who had just won the 24 Hours, driving an Aston Martin). DMH got the same response from Chevrolet as he had earlier received from Cadillac, and furthermore was chastised by British Motor Corporation (BMC) management for attempting to go outside the firm's own engine sources. So sadly, Shelby had to look elsewhere for the Anglo-American hybrid he was working on... a little car known as the Cobra, and a story that might have started as early as 1952 if General Motors had not already perfected the art of sticking their heads up their uncommonly tight fundamental apertures.

Batwing butterfly is the new butterfly at our exhibit. Very beautiful.

Description

Wingspan - 88 to 136mm.

Male : Tailless. Above, the butterfly is bluish-black and unmarked.

It has a scent patch in a rounded black-brown dorsal fold. When the fold is opened, the white lower half of the scent patch can be seen.

The abdomen has white stripes. The head of the butterfly is rose-coloured.

Female : Tailless. Above, the butterfly is grey-brown. It has dark stripes in between the veins. It has a large pale patch below vein 2 on the upper forewing.

Male upperside rich velvety blue-black. Fore wing: outwardly towards the terminal margin and the whole of the hind wing except the dorsal area have in certain lights a rich dark purple bloom, in others a very dark green; dorsal area and the whole inner side of the sexual fold opaque brownish black; outer half of fore wing with pale adnervular streaks more or less prominent. Underside similar; fore wing with the adnervular pale streaks broader, more prominent, extended further inwards well up to the terminal margin. Hind wing: ground-colour more uniform blue-black than on the upperside. Antennae, head, thorax and abdomen black; the head in front, on the sides and beneath, the sides of the thorax and of the abdomen rich crimson ; beneath, the thorax and abdomen black, the latter with lateral black spots in addition on its crimson sides.

Female. Upperside dull black. Fore wing with the pale greyish-green streaks very broad and prominent, especially in interspaces 1 and 2, the streaks extend also into the cell. Hind wing more uniform, with a dark dull blue, in some lights dark green, bloom. Underside similar, the streaks on the fore wing broader and paler; hind wing as on the upperside, more uniform, duller, opaque. Antennae and thorax black, abdomen dull brownish black, head crimson; beneath as in the male, but the crimson less bright, especially on the sides of the abdomen and without the lateral spots on the latter.

In Sikkim, according to Elwes and de Niceville, it occurs from quite low elevations in the Terai up to 7000 feet. Its almost uniform dark colour renders it inconspicuous in the jungle, and it is therefore difficult to account for its being further protected by a disagreeable smell and probably taste. Wood-Mason has recorded that the females have a strong and disgustingly rank musky odour.[1]
