students, and not to a handful ofoffice-bearers or their political masters. That the strength (or dignity) of the union lies in .

selling f:A votes. At times, these unions become appendages of the administration -a tool to implement the anti-student .
policy and keep the general students under control. Of course, It is not surprising that the administration and these so-called .
student organizations end up on the same side -after all, both are implementing the same policies formulated by their .
masters in the parliament. These practices by the mainstream student organizations not only hide the real potential of the .
Union as an Invaluable weapon in the student's struggle for a democratic campus and society, it also turns the general .
students away from union and activism. What's even more alarming, the ruling class parties take advantage of this mess .

subverts even the possibility of any meaningful student movement by making the union more subservient to the authorities. .

union that can resist the imperialist onslaught on education and students' rights. .
Reservation: Forced by people's movements and widespread discontent, the government has been forced to legislate on reservation. Yet, statistics show that even SC/ST reservation has never really been Implemented properly, either In jobs or in .
education. The same story is belng repeated with the OBC reservations. The Supreme Court rushed in to help the .
govemment caught in a tight spot between not being able to either withdraw or Implement the 27°/o OBC Reservation Act. That Is the magic of the semi-feudal semi-colonial system. The various organs of class/caste articulations of the Indian state, the legislature, the executive or the judiciary, will always work In tandem to legitimize and perpetuate the exploitation and the age-old domination. At the idea of compromising even an Iota of the upper caste domination of educational resources, we have witnessed the extremely reactionary backlash of the dominant castes in the form of Youth for Equality. Significantly, these champions of'equality' and 'merit' are deafeningly silent when thousands of seats are reserved for capitation fee. .
But what about the 'Left' led JNUSU? Right from the beginning the JNUSU leadership had made the demand for 27°/o OBC reservation conditional on the demand for 540/o seat increase! Which effectively mean that till the Interests of the real 'creamy layer' are safeguarded, there Is no question of allowing the backward castes through the portals of higher education. And given the state's reluctance to spend money on education, given that in the last so years seats couldn't be increased to accommodate students from educationally backward sections, such huge increase of seats at .
one go is really a remote possibility, which makes the chances of 27°/o OBC reservation rather bleak. What more the .
govemment Is even ready to start schools run by corporate sector (read SEZ) with llttJe Intervention from its side. And as . soon as the matter became sub-judice the JNUSU leadership was more than to sit silent. So much for thetr daims to be progressive! ~rhaps by their calculations, fighting for proper Implementation of reservation doesn't translate Into the logic ofelectoral anthmetlc-of making the 'winning combination'. Whatever the reason, the JNUSU leadership's action on the ground doesn't really match up to their rhetoric, and only perpetuates the benefits enjoyed by the privileged ones. This becomes even more evident when every year after the admissions the JNUSU publishes self-congratulatory notices to announce the fulfillment of quota in the overall admission procedure. What they choose to Ignore Is the non fulfillment of SC/ST quota in a number of specific schools and centers, especially In the science schools, ~nter for Law and Governance School ofArts and Aesthetics, certain centers in SIS etc. Discrimination against M. Phil candidates from oppressed sections' .
In School of Arts and Aesthetics was made public last year. The JNUSU leadership, forgetting Its pre-election promises, failed .
to ensure anymechanism to prevent that. Nor was the case further probed. .
-for Workers' rights: We have seen that the united fight put up by students-teachers-workers can be a potent .
threat to the powerful contractor-administration mafia. What ha.d been the role of the JNUSU leadership? When the struggle .
began In November, the SFI faction of JNUSU leadership was nowhere to be seen. And that Is quite understandable, giVen .

Restorative justice is a voluntary, supported process that brings together the person harmed and the person responsible for the harm, when safe and appropriate. It creates a space where those affected can express the impact of what happened, ask questions, and seek answers that are often left unresolved in traditional justice processes. For many, this can offer a sense of closure, emotional healing, and empowerment. For those who have caused harm, it can foster accountability, understanding, and the opportunity to make amends. At its core, restorative justice is about human connection – meeting individual needs, rebuilding trust, and supporting safer, more compassionate communities.
Background:
Restorative justice is a voluntary process of supported contact between a person who has caused harm and someone who has experienced harm. Where appropriate, this can also include their families and supporters.
Restorative justice does not always occur between a person who has experienced harm and/or a person who has caused that harm. It can also be used to address secondary harm caused by organisations or systems, conflict experienced across a community group and/or circles of those who have experienced similar types of harm. This is often referred to as ‘restorative practice’ or a ‘restorative approach’.
Restorative justice takes many forms, based on what is best for the parties involved, their needs and their continued safety. This is explored through the planning, preparation stages and continued risk assessment by a specially trained facilitator. Approaches include face-to-face conferences or meetings, letter-writing, video conferencing, ‘shuttle dialogue’ and healing circles.
Restorative justice has many evidence-based benefits for those who have experienced harm and also those who have caused harm, their families and communities. These can include being given a choice, empowerment, recovery, improved wellbeing and the process can also help prevent people from causing further harm.
Restorative Justice in Scotland:
It’s a voluntary and consent-based process in Scotland and any party can discontinue their engagement in the process at any point without losing support from services in place, to ensure trauma-informed practice continues.
Restorative justice can be considered by adults, children and young people in Scotland in a way which is responsive to trauma and takes a rights-based approach.
Research shows people in Scotland want the option of exploring restorative justice across a range of crime types, including those considered serious and sensitive in nature. This does not mean it will always go ahead, but even the choice is found to be empowering.
Restorative justice operates in parallel to the criminal justice and youth justice systems in Scotland and is never used an alternative to this. Outcomes achieved and/or agreed through restorative justice have no impact on any decisions taken throughout the criminal justice process.
