The Government Accountability Office (GAO) is an independent nonpartisan agency within the U.S. government that was created in 1921 to promote accountability and transparency. It works to investigate how the federal government spends taxpayer money and help Congress oversee federal programs and agencies. The GAO reviews and evaluates federal programs policies and spending to ensure they are efficient effective and compliant with legal and regulatory requirements. In addition they also investigate waste fraud and abuse. The GAO also tests and evaluates new technologies inspects sensitive government operations and provides advice to Congress the President and other government agencies.
