Likely a male due to its dark wing and tail plumage, vs. females that are more gray. A far cry from the vibrant scarlet seen in the spring (accompanying photo). At the Balancing Rock, Central Park, New York.

While accompanying my Son on the Maui, Wailea Blue Golf Course, I was fortunate to take-in some beautiful vistas and scenes. It was a sensory-overload experience.

Accompanied by the light of many stars, this Santa Claus travels on his round disc over the calm water to the human world. It looks a lot like surfing ;-))

This unique disc is powered by solar energy and reaches supersonic speeds, which should surprise no one. Furthermore, this Santa Claus carries a bag full of very, very, very tiny folded gifts, which automatically get their true size once they arrive at their destination. This is to reassure those who wondered where the presents are…..

So it's Barangaroo Avenue in Sydney.

Just near Waterman's Quay.

Looking south to the W Hotel.

To the left is the 'Old Town' Chinese Restaurant with its quaint food and extreme prices.

To the right is street parking. Just bring along your old jalopy.

Or you can now access Barangaroo from the nearby brand sparkling new Metro Station. SO, it's just 25 minutes from Castle Hill to Barangaroo (and the city), woo hoo.

And to accompany this image of the Old Town restaurant at Barangaroo, here is Lil Nas X with 'Old Town Road':

The accompanying text reads, in part:

"Drain

City of Bishop, California

No single event in the last 100 years has had such a dramatic and lasting effect on Bishop than the draining of Owens Valley.

In providing more water for (the city of) Los Angeles the result here was the loss of a vast fertile land. Here too was a great loss of life and the loss of 'a great life.' And here in the drying fields, a war of rights was waged whose embers still glow undoused even today."

On Boxing Day (or the day after Xmas), I was accompanied on a morning walk by some friends staying at my beach house for holidays, and New Year festivities (especially the Sydney Harbour Bridge fireworks).

We walked down the road from my place to the iconic Gorge Walk, a winding up-and-down boardwalk 1.2 kms long. It was constructed along some cliff tops and rocky headlands at Point Lookout, Nth Stradbroke Island (Queensland, Australia; also known as Minjerribah), with spectacular sweeping Pacific Ocean coastal views.

Here, we are looking at the Main Beach vista, which runs down the island from this point. Luckily, we also saw some wild kangaroos grazing nearby, a dolphin pod swimming by, and some sea turtles.

All in all, the Gorge Walk is a rather magical experience. Hope you also enjoy this local view, and especially those of you in cold places in the northern hemisphere. I know what it's like having lived in Scandinavia as a kid of travel-love parents.

Ps, if you enlarge the pic a bit, you can see a pack of surfers on the left side of the right branch waiting for waves to catch, they were very small from where I was.

Cattle egrets like to stay near large animals for a very practical reason: food.

Here’s why:

Insect hunting: Large grazers such as buffalo, zebras, and elephants disturb the grass and soil while walking and grazing. This causes insects, larvae, and small animals to come out.

Easier food: The egret doesn’t have to actively search; it benefits from what the big animals flush out.

Safety: Staying close to large animals reduces the risk of predators, as those usually target the big prey.

Symbiosis: Sometimes cattle egrets even pick parasites off the skin of these animals, which benefits both parties.

You should see the accompanying dance moves! …

… well, on second thoughts, perhaps you’d better not :)

This is another twist wobble but with a different subject. This was taken last month at Seaton on the south coast.

I couldn’t help thinking while I was processing it that it would make a good image for a bit of Sliders Sunday mangling. But in a fit of unusual generosity I have spared you that (for now ;) ). I like the colours on this one, along with the repeated shapes...

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image not too dizzily. Happy 100x :)

A niece of mine wrote the narrative poem (below) to accompany this photo ... she is a fine talent!

I bring the photo forward from my photostream in her honour. We are contemplating a book of her poetry to accompany some of my photographs - perhaps it will happen, perhaps it will not. I will share your comments with her. Cheers!

'In Search of Lost Time'

A few stores along that side of the street

Sit empty and forgotten

Like the occasional refuse carelessly tossed

On cobbled streets.

Old windows reflect the busyness

And hum of street noise.

The old man paused at 37B during his morning shuffle

Peering through the dirty glass,

Hunched slightly forward,

Hands tightly clasped behind him in

Some personal pathos.

He waited until she took form again,

Her small oval face partly obscured

By time and rebellious curls,

Her flashing dark eyes, captivation.

Why had he never dared to draw up his breath,

March into the tinker’s shop and ask

Her to tea!

Had she ever known he was there?

There was such promise!

But the war.

Carried her away like it did his youth

That ebbed away on the front lines.

He returned like so many did,

A shell.

He forgot to demand of life

What it could still proffer,

Trying to forget

The roar, clamour and blood

And the last sighs of fallen friends.

He didn’t look for her again

Until the loneliness

Outweighed the din of past battles

And there,

He found her again

Past the reflections

Of old glass and shadows.

We have had a major bout of freezing rain during the night, about 5mm of photogenic - but very dangerous - ice on everything ... cross your fingers for us that our power lines don't come down. Trees and branches are crashing all about as I write this ... the price of having such warm unseasonable weather I suppose?

An excellent ensemble accompanied a theatrical and musical performance "Thieves of Dreams" written by Lenka Lichtenberg and her grandmother Anna Hana. Bass player Joe Phillips does not cross my path very often, as he plays mostly with chamber and symphonic orchestras. I've seen him in a smaller group, Payadora Tango, where he played bass and guitar. First time I visited the York Uni. It's in the north part of Toronto and there was never good reason to visit there for me. Glad I did this time. The background is a photo of young Ana Hana Friesová, who wrote the poems which Lenka turned into the songs. She and Lenka's mother Renee survived TEREZIN concentration camp in WWII.

Boyacá's bridge. Monument and puente built in place of the battle, re-fitting the original puente.

Monument to Simon Bolivar, puente de Boyacá, Colombia.

The Boyacá Bridge is one of the most important battlefields in contemporary Colombian history. And on August 7, 1819 and contrary to all possibilities, Simón Bolívar's armies defeated the Spanish troops released by General José María Barreiro, sealing Colombia's independence,

Several monuments were erected at the battlefield site. The central point is the Bolivar Monument, an 18-meter-high sculpture topped by the statue of the Colombian hero and accompanied by five angels symbolizing the so-called Bolivarian countries liberated by Bolivar: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Near the place, an eternal flame burns in honor of Bolivar.

The Puente de Boyacá, which gives its name to the battlefield and which Bolivar's troops crossed to fight the Spanish, is just a simple, small bridge that was rebuilt in 1939.

The battlefield is on the main road from Yunja to Bogota, 15 km south of Tunja.

The Upper Geyser Basin is famous for hosting Old Faithful Geyser. But there is much more in the area than just this famous geyser. The Upper Geyser Basin also boasts the largest concentration of geysers in the world, including many of the worlds largest geysers.

A geyser is a spring characterized by intermittent discharge of water ejected turbulently and accompanied by steam. As a fairly rare phenomenon, the formation of geysers is due to particular hydrogeological conditions that exist only in a few places on Earth. Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma.

Generally, surface water works its way down to an average depth of around 2,000 metres (6,600 ft) where it contacts hot rocks. The resultant boiling of the pressurized water results in the geyser effect of hot water and steam spraying out of the geyser's surface vent (a hydrothermal explosion). - Wikipedia

This song was one of the first I learned in english. For years it accompanied me and it kinda became the hymn for my early teenage years. It's just all around a beautiful song, and the intensity of her voice.. makes me dream. I tried to match the aesthetic of the music video, which was on a lot back in the day on MTV (yes, kids, MTV actually had music videos back the 😂)

Eternal Flame - The Bangles

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling

Do you feel my heart beating

Do you understand?

Do you feel the same

Am I only dreaming

Is this burning an eternal flame?

I believe it's meant to be, darling

I watch you when you are sleeping

You belong with me

Do you feel the same?

Am I only dreaming

Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Say my name

Sun shines through the rain

A whole life so lonely

And then come and ease the pain

I don't want to lose this feeling, oh

Say my name

Sun shines through the rain

A whole life so lonely

And then come and ease the pain

I don't want to lose this feeling, oh

Close your eyes, give me your hand

Do you feel my heart beating

Do you understand?

Do you feel the same

Am I only dreaming

Or is this burning an eternal flame?

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling

Do you feel my heart beating

Do you understand?

Do you feel the same

Am I only dreaming

Is this burning an eternal flame?

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling

Do you feel my heart beating

Do you understand?

Do you feel the same

Am I only dreaming, ah

An eternal flame

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling

Do you feel my heart beating

Do you understand?

Do you feel the same

Am I only dreaming, ah

Is this burning an eternal flame?

Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling

Normally, an accompanying sculpture on a much larger monument would go unnoticed or be overshadowed by the magnitude of the main attraction. These eagles, however are quite an exception and are beautiful in detail and natural beauty. On the top of each column these bronze eagles have outspread wings and are standing on a granite ball.

The Pennsylvania Columns were constructed in stages. The Pennsylvania Columns were started in 1909 but a lack of funds prevented its completion until 1912. (The eagles and bronze reliefs of Pennsylvania generals were added in 1910.) The monument, which flanks Outer Line Drive, features two tall granite columns. At the base of each column there are two bronze plaques containing the bas-relief busts of two military officers--Colonel William Irvine and Adjutant General Joseph Reed; Major General Arthur St. Clair and Brigadier General John Cadwalader; Brigadier General John Armstrong and Brigadier General J. Peter G. Muhlenberg; Lieutenant Colonel Josiah Harman and Major General Thomas Mifflin. On the top of each column of course are the bronze eagles with outspread wings, standing on the two respective granite balls.

The sculptor Henry Bush-Brown of Newburgh, New York was the artist.

A photo from last year which I resurrected to accompany a paper I have coming out this year on long-lasting effects of air pollution in this environment. The photo mostly shows off the vegetation of the alpine, a mix of sedges and forbs, at its peak green here. Fall colors have already advanced by this posting time (mid August)- the growing season is very short at 12,000' / 3700 m. Summer monsoon clouds have built up with the threat of a late afternoon thunderstorm. The peaks are (r - l) Mount Audubon, Paiute Peak, and Pawnee Peak, as viewed from Niwot Ridge.

This video started before Christmas 2020 when lockdown restrictions were eased but this wasn't to last. Little did I know and I never capitalised on the conditions in the landscape at that time. On my return I was given something else. The Sunken trees of Thirlmere ended up with magical morning light! Sometimes I catch myself thinking black thoughts, and I know I have to fight it.

I took my camera with me and went to take a picture of Mrs. Spring, just as I see her this year: a seductive and fragrant, she walks through our gardens, parks and streets wearing a black dress. Don't trust her, stay at home, or at least a safe distance away. Let her go and let she takes with her this evil that accompanies her this year.

Be well, stay at home and thank you for visiting.
