This will be my last post for 2022. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a wonderful, happy and healthy New Year with lots of good photographic opportunities.

Now the commonest and most widespread UK bird of prey. The buzzard is quite large with broad, rounded wings, and a short neck and tail. When gliding and soaring it will often hold its wings in a shallow 'V' and the tail is fanned. Buzzards are variable in colour from all dark brown to much paler variations, all have dark wingtips and a finely barred tail. Their plaintive mewing call could be mistaken for a cat.

Large sandy-colored raptor. In flight it has a strong underwing pattern, and holds its wings in a bent M-shape. Tail is relatively long and slightly rounded. Calls loudly with a distinctive repeated whistle. Common along coasts and waterways where it scavenges for fish. (eBird)

Whistling Kites were a regular occurence during most of our trip. This one was welcoming the morning with its distinctive whistle.

The Bald Eagle Haliaeetus leucocephalus is an enormous bird. Haliaeetus denotes sea eagle and leucocephalus refers to its white head. The wings, wide and long for soaring, span more than 2 m. When perched, the bird measures about 76 cm tall. Weights of over 7 kg are not uncommon. On average, females are larger than males, and juveniles are larger but lighter in weight than adults of the same sex. Bald Eagles that breed in the southern United States are smaller than those that breed farther north.

Enormous gray and white raptor that soars with wings held in strong V-shape. In flight note black and white underwing pattern, short tail. Juvenile is much browner and can be confused with Wedge-tailed Eagle, but note mostly pale and fairly short tail. Predominantly found along coastlines, as well as estuaries and inland waterways. Captive Bird. Lovely to see one so close.

Majestic adults have blackish-brown body with white head and tail. Several stages of immature plumages aren't quite as majestic, from fully dark brown to messy and mottled with large patches of white. Look especially for white mottling on the belly on immatures. Scavenges and hunts near bodies of water. Soars with wings flat, like a large, dark plank. Head appears large in flight; projects far in front of wings. Surprisingly weak-sounding vocalization is a series of high-pitched whistles. (eBird)

This beautiful pair of eagles watched us as we left Tofino for our pelagic bird watching trip. They were on a small island fairly near to shore. To their left, you can see a couple of Ochre Seastars, which indicates that this rock is underwater at least some part of each day.

One of the ospreys at Shell Beach, Louisiana. This is my first osprey image I've uploaded as I seldom see them and usually a long way off. They are definitely beautiful birds!!! :-)

Canadian Bald Eagle populations are generally stable or increasing slightly, although the situation varies regionally. Currently, populations in coastal British Columbia, the boreal forest, and the Atlantic provinces of Canada are doing well. If mortality rates continue to be high, population growth will be slow. However, if suitable habitat remains available and human disturbance is kept to a minimum, we should be able to enjoy this magnificent soaring bird for some time to come.

There were several pairs of these lovely eagles making their home along the river. This one is greeting the morning sun and stretching his toes, prior to starting the day's hunting. We were so far below his station that we didn't even get a glance.
