Dipper - Cinclus Cinclus
aka Water Ouzel
Double click to view
Dippers are members of the genus Cinclus in the bird family Cinclidae, named for their bobbing or dipping movements. They are unique among passerines for their ability to dive and swim underwater.
They have a characteristic bobbing motion when perched beside the water, giving them their name. While under water, they are covered by a thin, silvery film of air, due to small bubbles being trapped on the surface of the plumage.
Dippers are found in suitable freshwater habitats in the highlands of the Americas, Europe and Asia. In Africa they are only found in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. They inhabit the banks of fast-moving upland rivers with cold, clear waters, though, outside the breeding season, they may visit lake shores and sea coasts.
The high haemoglobin concentration in their blood gives them a capacity to store oxygen greater than that of other birds, allowing them to remain underwater for thirty seconds or more, whilst their basal metabolic rate is approximately one-third slower than typical terrestrial passerines of similar mass. One small population wintering at a hot spring in Suntar-Khayata Mountains of Siberia feeds underwater when air temperatures drop below −55 °C (−67 °F).
Dippers are completely dependent on fast-flowing rivers with clear water, accessible food and secure nest-sites. They may be threatened by anything that affects these needs such as water pollution, acidification and turbidity caused by erosion. River regulation through the creation of dams and reservoirs, as well as channelization, can degrade and destroy dipper habitat.
Dippers are also sometimes hunted or otherwise persecuted by humans for various reasons. The Cyprus race of the white-throated dipper is extinct. In the Atlas Mountains dippers are claimed to have aphrodisiacal properties. In parts of Scotland and Germany, until the beginning of the 20th century, bounties were paid for killing dippers because of a misguided perception that they were detrimental to fish stocks through predation on the eggs and fry of salmonids.

Today’s lighthouse is the fourth incarnation of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, and uses a fourth order Fresnel lens. Once fairly numerous, no less than a dozen screwpile lighthouses served as aids to navigation along North Carolina’s trafficked rivers and sounds, dating back to the 1800’s. Easily accessible along the Manteo Waterfront, the lighthouse contains exhibits highlighting Roanoke Island’s lighthouse and maritime history.

The 105-foot Hannah Bridge has spanned Thomas Creek since 1936 and was built on land from an original Donation Land Grant from 1846. The characteristic Linn County covered bridge design includes segmental portal arches, exposed beams at the gable ends and white board-and-batten cladding. The Howe truss is exposed through large side openings.
Living here in Linn County I have six covered bridges easily accessible to me. Besides who doesn't like a covered bridge in the snow? This was taken early in the morning and I could still see just a hint of the colorful sky.
I was hoping that a warm and sunny day might bring out the Brown Hairstreaks which are already out further south, but no such luck. I had heard 2nd brood Wood Whites had been present from a blog on the site web page, so hoped I might see some as a secondary target and was pleased to see 2-3 around. Very elusive though and reluctant to settle, still less in an uncluttered or accessible location.
Thanks for viewing and thank you for your faves and comments.
It is the third highest mountain in Brazil, situated on the border of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais states. It is the highest point in both states. It was historically considered the highest mountain in Brazil until 1965, when Pico da Neblina and Pico 31 de Março, next to the Venezuelan border, were explored, measured, and both found to be higher. The peak is said to have been so named after Pedro II, Emperor of Brazil, ordered a flag to be flown on top of it.
It is one of the major attractions of Caparaó National Park, accessible from the nearby town of Alto Caparaó. That town and the entrance to the park lie in Minas Gerais, but the summit of Pico da Bandeira lies in Espírito Santo.
The summit is accessible to hikers of most age groups, with only very limited fitness requirements. The track from the park entrance to the summit track [8 km (5.0 mi)] can be driven by most vehicles, and the summit track itself runs for approximately 9 km (5.6 mi), with a further 1,000 m (3,280 ft) climb.

The sequence of the highest mountains in Brazil:
#1: Pico da Neblina (2,993.80 m / 9,822 ft), Venezuela/Brazil;
#2: March 31 Peak (2,972.70 m / 9,816 ft), Venezuela/Brazil;
#3: Pico da Bandeira (2,892 m / 9,488 ft), Brazil;
#4: Pico do Calçado* (2,849 m / 9,347 ft), Brazil;
#6: Pico do Cristal (2,769.80 m / 9,084 ft), Brazil;
The difference from the third highest to the first is only 101.80 meters / 334 ft in altitude.
I climbed the third, fourth and sixth in Brazil this weekend. Only the sixth mountain is challenging.
* For reasons of topographical prominence, the IBGE considers Pico do Calçado a secondary peak of Pico da Bandeira and not a separate mountain.
The riddle of the Sphinx.
'What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening? ' The answer? Man, who crawls as a baby, walks on two legs as an adult, and uses a walking stick in his twilight years. In Greek mythology Oedipus correctly answered this prompting the Sphinx to inexplicably drown herself.
More famously these days, American tourists naturally ask why the ancient Egyptians built the Pyramids so close to Macdonalds. The good news for them is that Pizza Hut is now even closer, easily accessible to men of any age. In this photo Pizza Hut is just a few steps behind me.

Btw this was taken just a week or so ago, I noticed my Fuji x100v was bracketing exposure and iso..have no idea how I did that because I did not set it up to bracket.
I altered the settings to stop the bracketing and set to single shot. However it must have gone to default settings. I did notice and fully intended to remove the date to upload date but forgot 🤔

The snowy scene on the mountains always is so beautiful to behold! This is one of my favorite mountains to visit in Colorado as it is very accessible and very beautiful. You can tell that summer is on its way but winter is stubborn to let go. The changing seasons in Colorado are very beautiful and special to witness.

The Bois de Boulogne is a large public park located along the western edge of the 16th arrondissement of Paris, near the suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt and Neuilly-sur-Seine. The land was ceded to the city of Paris by the Emperor Napoleon III to be turned into a public park in 1852.
It is the second-largest park in Paris, slightly smaller than the Bois de Vincennes on the eastern side of the city. It covers an area of 845 hectares (2088 acres), which is about two and a half times the area of Central Park in New York and slightly less (88%) than that of Richmond Park in London.
The Bois de Boulogne contains two artificial lakes and eight artificial ponds, connected by three artificial streams. They receive their water from a canal drawn from Ourq River and from artesian wells in Passy. The water arrives in the Lac Superieur (Upper Lake), built in 1852 and located near the Hippodrome de Auteil, then flows by gravity to the Grand Cascade and then to the Lac Inferieur, or Lower Lake.
The Lac Inferieur (1853) is the largest lake in the park, near the large lawns of Muette. The area is very popular with joggers, and boats can be rented on the lower lake from 15 February to the end of October. The lake is the home to many swans and ducks. An island in the lake, accessible by boat, contains the city's only monument to the Park's builder, Napoleon III; a small wooden kiosk at the end of the island, called the Kiosk of the Emperor.
The island is only accessible when the tide is out and even then there are many steep and uneven steps up to the fort.
St Catherine’s Island has a wealth of history surrounding it. The island itself was first thought to be a place of Christian worship, but it was turned into a defensive fort by the War Office in 1866 in response to the threat of French invasion. In 1907 the fort was bought by the Windsor Richards family who turned it into a private house and in 1968 the fort was opened as a public zoo. The zoo relocated in 1979 and the site remained empty. The remains of the fort and other buildings on the island were briefly opened to the public as a tourist attraction in May 2015, but due to conflicts with the county council in August 2016 it closed.

Ynys Giftan Island
Ynys Giftan Island is situated in the Dwyrd
Estuary in a rural location overlooking the
picturesque town of Portmeirion and provides
panoramic views of stunning coastline,
mountains and the Irish Sea. The Island is
approximately 3 miles from the popular town
of Harlech and 10 miles from the town of
Porthmadog. It is accessible by boat at high tide
and at low tide by foot, tractor or other suitable
vehicle for traveling across the Estuary.
One of only 43 of Britain’s unbridged tidal
islands, Ynys Giftan is in the wide Afon
Dwyryd estuary near the village of Talsarnau
in Gwynedd, North Wales. The Island has been
unoccupied for many years and has a unique
history. It is said to have been gifted to the
current Lord Harlech’s ancestors by Queen Anne
in the early 1700s, hence it became known as
Ynys Giftan (‘Anne’s Gift Island’).

The Berber families would store their grain and other commodities in granaries such as this fortified structure. The units were ventilated and many had more than one compartment. Each was accessible by a set of very steep and narrow steps. At the back, towards the gate are two examples of the containers used to store commodities. When I visited two or three ground level units had been converted into rental accommodation.

Perito Moreno is considered one of the most accessible glaciers in the world for a few reasons. Firstly, it is located in the Los Glaciares National Park, which is a popular tourist destination in Argentina. The park is easily accessible by car or bus from the nearby town of El Calafate. Secondly, the glacier is relatively close to the edge of the national park, which means that visitors can walk to the viewing platforms and get relatively close to the glacier without needing to take a long hike or climb. There are also several viewing platforms and walkways built around the glacier, which provide visitors with different perspectives of the glacier and its surroundings. Finally, the Los Glaciares National Park offers a variety of guided tours, such as boat tours, trekking tours, and ice hiking tours that allow visitors to explore the glacier in different ways. Taken on a lovely sunny day last week at Brandy Cove - a very small cove between Casell and Pwll Du - only accessible when the tide is out.
I think that the layered look of the clouds and rocks is what caught my attention here. This shot is of Pedernales Falls, which typically has the highest water volume flowing in the spring. The low water level here gave me a chance to explore some areas that are often not safely accessible.
Quality Creek flows out of the hills near Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. There is a series of small waterfalls, with this being the most accessible. Just remember to bring your bear spray along, just in case you come across grizzly or black bears or a cougar.

The Strid & Strid Wood
The spectacular Strid is where the broad River Wharfe becomes suddenly narrow and the water rushes with great force. The Strid was formed by the wearing away of softer rock by the circular motion of small stones in hollows, forming a series of potholes which in time linked together to form a deep, water filled chasm.
Please note the Strid is very dangerous and lives have been lost. Please take notice of the advice signs in this area and stay well back from the edge.
The Strid is wider than it looks and the rocks are usually very slippy.
The Strid gets its name from the Anglo Saxon 'Stryth' meaning Turmoil or Tumult; corrupted into Strid, from the possibility of striding across the channel.
The Strid is easily accessible from Sandholme car park. It is approximately a twenty minute walk through Strid Wood from the Cavendish Pavilion. This path is suitable for wheelchairs. Alternatively, the Strid can be accessed from Strid Wood car park. This route takes ten minutes, however, the path is uneven in places and terrain easy to moderate.
This ancient woodland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and one of the largest areas of acidic oak woodland in the Yorkshire Dales. It is renowned for the flora and fauna, particularly the carpets of bluebells in Spring. Follow the colour coded nature trails through the wood and relax and enjoy the view from one of the many carefully positioned seats. There are walks to suit all ages and abilities including the green trail. This popular trail which is suitable for wheelchairs follows the west bank of the River Wharfe from the Cavendish Pavilion to the Strid.
Visitors are asked to keep their dogs on a lead whilst in the woods to avoid disturbing the animals and to prevent damage to the fragile woodland plants.
Lake Garda, Italy
There are countless jetties dotted all around Lake Garda... the only problem is, you need to be an Olympic Long Jumper or Pole Vaulter to access 99% of them. Most are either the property of the adjacent lakeside hotels or private residences. Just to make sure you are aware of this most are fenced off with padlocked gates and the few overzealous ones use a little barbed-wire to keep you off them. The long jump/pole vault option comes into effect for those jetties where the lakeside section has been removed to make them totally inaccessible.
This is the first jetty I found that I could actually walk onto without any restrictions but was a good half hour walk south of Malcesine town centre. Taken half an hour after my previous posting just as the sun was beginning to touch the mountain tops on the opposite side of the lake. Just to the left of the jetty can be seen the town of Limone Sul Garda and at the very top of the lake is Riva del Garda.

Welcome to the heart of our homeland. Only accessible from the grounds of the Mansion, and by passing a tunnel of old trees lays the Dreampond, the last area I created in our new home.
The idea of it came to me over a year ago. Someone I deeply cared for was mourning, and nothing anyone could say would help. So I thought of a place where she could find her inner peace again, relax, escape from the world. That was the birthplace of the Dreampond. But My skills very almost non existing, my knowledge of building and creating minimal at best and my sim was very small. But I created the first version of it and had only three guidelines to do so:
- it needed to be around water. Water for me is soothing and relaxing
- it needed to be it's separate area and own habitat, calming and peaceful with lots of possibilities to relax and enjoy yourself
- and it should pass a certain feeling. a deep Forrest, humidity, animals making sounds, waterfalls.. and for some reason I pictured it all by night
Excerpt from news.livingrealty.com/neighbourhood-profile-streetsville/:
Initially unveiled in September of 2014, following a $3.1 million redevelopment and name change, the newly-revitalized Streetsville Village Square – located at the intersection of Main and Queen Streets – is the community’s favourite gathering place, and arguably its biggest draw for visitors and residents alike.
The City of Mississauga’s “Official Opening” for the new square took place on June 6, 2015, and was personally attended by Mayor Bonnie Crombie as well as Ward 11 Councillor George Carlson. Since then, the revitalized square has already hosted a number of seasonal events over the course of its first summer in business.
Indeed, the square’s transformation features a number of impressive upgrades, including a performance stage area, energy efficient lighting, sound systems and accessible features. For low-key gatherings, the space also now includes an abundance of public seating, complete with eye-catching yellow umbrellas atop many of the tables.
Renovations of the square also included upgrading the street surface with attractive brickwork, as well as a refurbishment and relocation of the Streetsville Cenotaph – a treasured local monument and a part of the community’s history since 1926.
The road to the Faial Caldera winds through forested patches on the volcano’s slopes. Because much of Faial's original forests were cleared in the 15th and 16th centuries for agriculture and pasture, today's forests are largely composed of introduced species. The dominant tree in this photo, Japanese red cedar (Cryptomeria japonica), thrives in the Azores and is commonly found in Faial's woodlands. Enclaves of native evergreen forests and shrublands persist but mostly in less accessible, higher-elevation areas. Both native and introduced woodland trees and shrubs can be found in the Faial Nature Park and the Azores Geopark

The Schynige Platte. Canton of Bern. Switzerland. September 4, 2018. izakigur. 2018:09:04 12:15:58 . No. 4398 .
"The Schynige Platte (Scheinige Platte on the old Siegfried Map)[1] is a small mountain ridge and a viewpoint in the Bernese Highlands and belongs to the Schwarzhorn group. The mountain range consists of three peaks: Gumihorn (2,099 m (6,886 ft)), Tuba (2,076 m (6,811 ft)), and the closest summit next to the viewpoint, Geiss (2,067 metres (6,781 ft)). The viewpoint lies at an altitude of about 2,000 metres (7,000 ft), at the western end of a prominent ridge of the Schwarzhorn group, which separates the valley of the Schwarze Lütschine from Lake Brienz.
It is notable for its hotel and, since 1893, its mountain railway, one of the highest in Switzerland. In good weather conditions there are views to many surrounding mountains, including the Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and others giants of the Bernese Alps. Also, the town of Interlaken and the two great lakes of Thun and Brienz are visible to the north, 1,500 metres (4,900 ft) lower.
The area is accessible via the Schynige Platte railway, which runs from Wilderswil, where connection is made with Bernese Oberland railway trains from Interlaken. The railway reaches a height of 1,967 metres (6,453 ft) at the terminus station, on the south-facing slopes of Geiss[citation needed] summit. Southwest of the station is a hotel and mountain restaurant, at a height of 1,983 metres (6,506 ft). Northeast of the station is the Schynige Platte alpine botanical garden, specialising in the display of, and research into, the high altitude flora of Switzerland.
A number of short loop trails extend north from the train station, reaching several view points, all within one kilometre from each other. Directly above the station and hotel, and overlooking the valleys of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, is the Geiss summit (2,067 metres (6,781 ft))[citation needed]. Further north, and overlooking Interlaken and the two great lakes, are the Tuba (2,076 metres (6,811 ft)) and Oberberghorn (2,069 metres (6,788 ft)) summits. The highest summit in the Schynige Platte area, between the Daube and Geiss summits, the tower-like Gumihorn peak (2,099 metres (6,886 ft)), cannot be reached by pedestrians. The Schynige Platte is also the starting point for the popular hiking trails to Loucherhorn, Faulhorn or First which is connected to Grindelwald by a gondola lift."

Key West, a U.S. island city, is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It's also Florida's southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel hued, conch style houses, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs destinations for diving and snorkeling than for its beaches.
The island is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, with a total landmass of 4.2 square miles (11 km2). Duval Street, its famous main street, is a mere 1.1 miles (1.8 km) in length in its 14-block crossing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Florida Straits/Atlantic Ocean. In the late 1950s, many of the large salt ponds on the eastern side were filled in, nearly doubling the original land mass of the island. The island is 3,370 acres (13.6 km2) in area

Haslingden Grane is a glaciated valley lying to the west of Haslingden and in the north east of the West Pennine Moors. It is easily accessible via the B6232 Grane Road which links to the M65 motorway and the A56. It contains three reservoirs: (west to east) Calf Hey Reservoir, Ogden Reservoir and Holden Wood Reservoir.
Prior to the construction of the reservoirs in the 19th century the settlement of Haslingden Grane had a population of 1,300 and was the centre of an illegal whisky distilling industry. The remains of some buildings can still be seen. Much quarrying has taken place in the past and continues at Jamestone Quarry.
The valley is overlooked to the north by Oswaldtwistle Moor and to the south by Musbury Heights. The attractive moorland scenery makes it a popular place for walking especially through the well known Fairy Glen beauty spot, there is an information centre, parking and cafe at Clough Head.

20 minutes from Rouen, the Matmut Contemporary Art Center - Daniel Havis offers 4 exhibitions per year by artists of national and international stature.
With the aim of making art and culture accessible to the widest possible audience, the Matmut Group has been developing a dynamic cultural action policy for several years, particularly through the art center. It supports and seeks to promote artists and organizations in their creative and dissemination efforts. Each exhibition of approximately three months is accompanied by an edition and a cultural program (guided tours, workshops for children and schools, partnerships with different organizations, events) for young and old.

The neoclassical style castle proudly displays on its pediment the motto "Omnia pro arte" (Everything for art) inscribed by its builder Gaston Le Breton and today more alive than ever thanks to the Matmut Group. The castle is located in a 6-hectare park with different universes that evolve with the seasons: French garden, Japanese garden, Evolution garden, Dédale garden, arboretum, rose garden, all populated with monumental sculptures by famous artists (Peter Briggs, Norman Dilworth, Quentin Garel, Vera Molnar...).
