This hardy species of the merganser family will winter further north than any of the other members and will stay with us during the winter months as long as the water stays open. They prefer fresh water to salt water.
Alaska to Newfoundland is their breeding territory and they don't seem to have a nesting preference using anything from man-made boxes to nesting cavities to nesting on the ground.
They do tend to be one of the more social waterfowl species and can be found in huge flocks on lakes and do accept other species of diving ducks midst their own numbers.
Lots of open water is an asset to them when they go airborne as they require a running start across the top of the water for a distance. Once in the air they fly a straight line to their destination.
Females like this one make good use of their long body toting their ducklings around after they hatch.

Otrobanda (meaning ‘the other side’) is on the opposite side of St. Anna Bay. This district was developed in the 18th century. The main shopping street in Otrobanda is the Breedestraat. You can find this street between Kura Hulanda and the Riffort. Kura Hulanda is one of the best restorations of Otrobanda. An entire section of Otrobanda’s dilapidated slum was transformed into a magnificently renovated historical district, the best example of Dutch colonial architecture in the Caribbean.

Hello my amazing Flickr friends !!
Today is a blue day at Color my World Daily and this week it is also an orange day at the awesome Looking Close on Friday Group. And if you follow my « adventures » on Flicker, you may know that, last week I mixed up the dates and themes and I was sure orange was a theme for last Friday. I have no other excuses than the fact that this is sooooo « me ». Yes, I’m a very disorganized soul and I’m getting easily distracted. But dont you worry: I’m pretty much sure I have other assets, just ask my husband and you will see ;-)….
So lucky for me, i did several concepts for the blue vs orange theme and this way I can show you another picture for this theme. I hope it will be accepted, even if i took it last week. If it gets removed, dont worry, there is always another week and another theme. The Looking Close on Friday Group is awesome and the themes are always very inspiring :-).

The Giant's Causeway is an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic fissure eruption. It is located in County Antrim on the north coast of Northern Ireland, about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of the town of Bushmills.
Around 50 to 60 million years ago, during the Paleocene Epoch, Antrim was subject to intense volcanic activity, when highly fluid molten basalt intruded through chalk beds to form an extensive lava plateau. As the lava cooled, contraction occurred.
Horizontal contraction fractured in a similar way to drying mud, with the cracks propagating down as the mass cooled, leaving pillarlike structures, which are also fractured horizontally into "biscuits". In many cases the horizontal fracture has resulted in a bottom face that is convex while the upper face of the lower segment is concave, producing what are called "ball and socket" joints. The size of the columns is primarily determined by the speed at which lava from a volcanic eruption cools.
The extensive fracture network produced the distinctive columns seen today. The basalts were originally part of a great volcanic plateau called the Thulean Plateau which formed during the Paleocene.
According to legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by a giant. The story goes that the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn MacCool), from the Fenian Cycle of Gaelic mythology, was challenged to a fight by the Scottish giant Benandonner. Fionn accepted the challenge and built the causeway across the North Channel so that the two giants could meet. In one version of the story, Fionn defeats Benandonner. In another, Fionn hides from Benandonner when he realises that his foe is much bigger than he is. Fionn's wife, Oonagh, disguises Fionn as a baby and tucks him in a cradle. When Benandonner sees the size of the 'baby', he reckons that its father, Fionn, must be a giant among giants. He flees back to Scotland in fright, destroying the causeway behind him so that Fionn would be unable to chase him down.
Across the sea, there are identical basalt columns (a part of the same ancient lava flow) at Fingal's Cave on the Scottish isle of Staffa, and it is possible that the story was influenced by this.
In overall Irish mythology, Fionn mac Cumhaill is not a giant but a hero with supernatural abilities, contrary to what this particular legend may suggest. In Fairy and Folk Tales of the Irish Peasantry (1888) it is noted that, over time, "the pagan gods of Ireland [...] grew smaller and smaller in the popular imagination, until they turned into the fairies; the pagan heroes grew bigger and bigger, until they turned into the giants". There are no surviving pre-Christian stories about the Giant's Causeway, but it may have originally been associated with the Fomorians (Fomhóraigh); the Irish name Clochán na bhFomhóraigh or Clochán na bhFomhórach means "stepping stones of the Fomhóraigh". The Fomhóraigh are a race of supernatural beings in Irish mythology who were sometimes described as giants and who may have originally been part of a pre-Christian pantheon

The Louvre did not accept (a lot of raining in North France) that the building floats in the middle of the meadow, so that to avoid a hard soil, the landscaper - C.Mosbach - decided to open it to life, playing with the recessed join, more or less large and holes. Link to the weather, the skin is opened to spontaneaous moss system and flowers, relaxation beaches around the museum.
The paths of the park consist of a thin layer of concrete pierced in multiple places for a naturalistic aesthetic and ensure the drainage of the whole. Large round slabs of smooth concrete perforated with filtering materials draw the reception permeable or impermeable.

Getting as close as I possibly can on a circuit board, harvested from a remote-controlled power outlet whose remote went belly-up, capturing examples of tiny surface-mount devices, possibly resistors. The ruler scale at the bottom is in millimeters.
Taken with the Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens at 5X magnification. At that setting, the lens has to be less than an inch (25.4mm) from the subject, making lighting difficult. The lens and camera were attached to a macro focusing rail, a necessary but very finicky device (more so at extreme magnification) used to move the camera fore and aft to focus. Given my sometimes uncooperative set of hands I have, it was a challenge, indeed.
You can never tell what's inside unless you open it...
But please, don't open the people around you... hihihi

Back in the day, Union Pacific didn't require steam powered passenger specials to have diesel locomotive helpers.
Case it point, 4-6-6-4 "Challenger" No. 3985 capably leads a 17-car "Pacific Limited" charter up the 1.14% grade through Echo Canyon at Castle Rock, Utah on Aug. 2, 1992.

During the late summer and early fall breeding season, male Eastern Hellbenders will choose a large rock that is excavated from below to form a cavity. They will defend this shelter vigorously against rival males but will accept a female. While in this cavity, the female will lay several hundred eggs that are then externally fertilized by the male who will stay with, and guard, the nest until they hatch and even for a short period while the larvae grow.

This is my second post today. Since we haven't had much snow I have been going through the archives and I am amazed at how many images I never processed.
Today was sunny. That's the good news. The winds were steady at 20mph, gusting to 30. That makes macro photography a bit of a challenge. Still, that was the calmest the winds have been in several days, so I went out. Some good results, some a bit less so. I liked this one.
Flickr is really screwed up right now. The kids doing Flickr coding right now haven't yet mastered CHECKING THEIR WORK. A number of features -- several related to groups -- have been messed up to the point of unusability. I spend most of my time in groups, so it is troubling.
Plus, though I am indeed using the most recent version of FF, every page gives me an unsupported browser -- please update -- error. Based on the HUNDREDS of postings to the Help forum, it is just a screw up of ponderous proportions. If you are NOT seeing the various problems, I can't even guess why not...though I know most of my contacts do not participate in groups.
If I fall behind in commenting -- every photo page access is a hassle -- I'll try to make it up once Flickr gets its game together YET AGAIN.
The WonderRig Ultra did arrive today. VERY highly engineered gear. Will take some time to dial in...but it is completely wonderful. Probably totally conspicuous consumption, but you only go around once.

MSS: (on the bridge, in the command chair) Thank you. This is Major Sky. We are rendezvousing with another ship -- soon.
SCCT: Understood. Which ship are you meeting?
MSS: I don't know, but Captain Jetsam will be aboard.
SCCT: Do you plan to vee over?
MSS: No. We're on a tight schedule.
SCCT: Understood. Let us know if you need anything. (his image is replaced by one of the outpost)
MSS: (leans back in the command chair) Now, we wait.
Aboard the IRC Agatha Christie, Cpt Jetsam is leaning back in the command seat, appearing calm. A low tone from the Pilot's station draws her eyes.
Pilot: Captain Jetsam, that signal you had me scanning for; it just appeared at Outpost Septem Caelum.
CDL: (leans forward in the chair with a small smile) Take us there. Tach five.
CMOLB: (moves to stand by CDL's seat) I hope we make it in time.
Cpt Jetsam says nothing to this vocalized concern she shares, she simply gazes at the holo projection of stars and planets they pass until the screen glows purple as they drop out of tach speed, replaced by an image of the Frigus Iustitia orbiting Outpost Septem Caelum.
QDPN: Assume orbit.
Pilot: Aye, sir.
QDPN: Comm Officer, contact the Frigus Iustitia.

CDJ: It appears she was correct. You HAVE seized control of Major Sky, AND my SHIP.
CMOLB: (quietly, to CDJ) Careful, Captain.
MSS-KG: This merging with Scr--Major Sky was consensual. We took your ship, knowing you would follow. Captain Jetsam, the people of Vhipernhal, all of us, are dying! We desperately need your help!
CDJ: Consensual? Then let me talk to Major Sky.
MSS-KG: I'm sorry, Captain. If I sever the connection, I might not be able to reconnect. I barely managed to communicate with her after Dr. Litefful killed herself.
CDJ: I just call that, convenient.
MSS-KG: Captain, we don't have time for this verbal sparring. The people of my planet are dying. That is why our king took your scientists--
CDJ: (interrupts) YOU kidnapped the scientists?
MSS-KG: No, King Durus did. He's desperate to save our people, but his desperation verges on madness. He will do anything to save us, even risk going to war.
CMOLB: What are your people dying from?
MSS-KG: You are the chief medical officer of this ship. Good, I'm glad you chose to accompany the Captain. We don't know what is killing us, but we do know the source. A great, stellar cloud of unknown properties is slowly engulfing our world. There is nowhere for our people to hide. As our world rotates, all points ultimately come into contact with the phenomenon.
CDJ: How are the scientists supposed to help you with that? They aren't medical scientists.
MSS-KG: Plicare.
CDJ: (tenses, pretty sure this crew didn't know the secret of Plicare) You clearly have ships that can traverse space, if you need to move your people.
MSS-KG: King Durus doesn't want to move ships, Captain. He wants to move the world.
