Phoenix building abstract 1

Shadows and light have fascinated me for as long as I can remember, even as a child. So it isn't surprising that Paul Strand's photography excites and exhilarates me! Strand was one of the defining masters of early American modernist photography. He was also influenced by Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz.

I could have chosen many of my recent photos for this exercise on shadow and light, but I chose this one because it is different and I like the surreal feeling it has.

This was taken on an outside terrace. When I looked up, I could see big slabs of plain concrete above my head, but what really grabbed me were the shadows from the out of sight, striped canvas awning creating shadow stripes on the concrete as if they had been painted there. I could have cropped this, but just loved the reflection of the inside lights reflected on the big glass front - like other-worldly dots of energy seemingly floating in the sky!

This image empowers me and yet also allows me to dream! Leaving it in colour, gives a certain lightness to it, thanks to the space of light blue sky

The combination of coloured paper and a very shallow DOF can produce an amazing abstract formation, giving the proper lighting is available.

Or maybe it's a swirly puffy. Used Redfield plug-ins and thought it turned out fairly well. Also a good counterpoint to my previous image!
