On the night of July 3, 2022 I sat in my daughters front yard that overlooks the city of Dubuque, Iowa. The fireworks are shot over the Mississippi River at quite a distance from where we were watching them being fired up into the night sky. I used many settings on my camera, sports, landscape, creative auto. etc. I got some amazing images that make many of the fireworks look abstract and not your usual fireworks display. This past June I had the opportunity to take a few rides along the Mississippi River. These particular photo images were taken out by Mud Lake and then a few were taken by Lock and Dam 11 in Dubuque, Iowa. I found the river to be a beautiful blue, along with the sky, the algae a nice contrasting green along with the blades of grass, weeds, and reeds that were popping up and floating along the top of the river. Lily pads and leaves were also in the mix floating along the river bank. Nature at its finest. I took the occasion of a spell of spring snows to stay indoors and try the technique of photographing paint dripped/poured into a container of water. I had fun experimenting with different densities of paint and dimensions of the container of water.

SSC for 12th June was to take anything from nature and process it to create an abstract. Starting from the premise that I’m never going to improve on nature, what I’ve tried to do here is present some warm natural colours in an abstract way that still retains some of nature’s randomness and informality. The base is another picture of that laburnum, still in glorious bloom, and layered onto it is a copy of itself rotated through 90 degrees and at 50% opacity. Then I multiplied and tiled that image, with the tiles rotated horizontally and vertically. Finally I finished it off with an appropriately coloured border, to surround a sort of macedoine of spots of colour where the original image is impossible - or at least very difficult - to identify.

I'd been playing around with my iPhone in low light and decided to put the lessons learned into effect. This is one of about twenty shots I took with a Canon G1 X yesterday evening. Converted in Lightroom and Silver Efex Pro.
