The cat (Felis catus) is a domestic species of small carnivorous mammal.
It is the only domesticated species in the family Felidae and is commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from the wild members of the family. Cats are commonly kept as house pets but can also be farm cats or feral cats; the feral cat ranges freely and avoids human contact. Domestic cats are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to kill rodents. About 60 cat breeds are recognized by various cat registries.

Matthew Kelly is an exceptional author. If you're looking for a book that can transform your life, you should definitely choose one of his. He has a unique ability to connect with you personally. I am currently reading "Perfectly Yourself" and I find it truly inspiring. Amid the busy days of the season and life, I discover that snuggling up with a blanket and a great book has become my refuge. There's nothing quite like reading to engage a restless mind.
Day 2 of 25
The sandhill cranes at Bosque del Apache generally fly in to their night haven ponds just at sunset (from my past experience, which admittedly is limited). This year they mostly waited until after sunset, preventing getting their aerial portraits with beautiful warm light. On this evening a Loggerhead Shrike stopped by to pose on a sign, providing a nice consolation prize. Although they are mostly insectivorous, the bit of a hook in the bill also is indicative of their ability to eat small mammals.
I've lost my voice (well I have been back at work for 2 days ;-) and also seem to have lost the ability to come up with a title for this...

Maybe I'm just picky (at which point I will probably just blame what I got my degree in), but it irks me how SL seems to take intelligent people and toys with their ability to write in complete, correct sentences. Don't get me wrong - I'm down for typos and I am guilty of them too. But when you are purposely misspelling things because - well I don't know, maybe you are just lazy. And okay maybe I can stand incomplete sentences, but I think we should all take a stand and boycott the purposely misspelled words. Picky people of SL unite. LOL! Okay, I'm done with my rant.
P.S. This is not directed at any one person, but rather a collection of people and observations I've made over the past few weeks.

In September, Nebraska’s sunsets transform into breathtaking spectacles, amplified by the dramatic presence of thunderstorms and supercells. As summer’s heat begins to wane, the Great Plains remain a hotbed for dynamic weather, with warm, moist air clashing against cooler fronts to create vibrant, fiery skies. The sun dips below the horizon, painting the vast Nebraska landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple, often intensified by towering cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds, illuminated by the fading light, glow with an ethereal quality, their edges tinged with gold as the sun’s rays refract through the atmosphere. The open plains offer an unobstructed view, making the interplay of light and storm clouds a daily masterpiece, where the sinking sun seems to set the sky ablaze against the silhouette of distant fields.
For those in rural areas, watching a September supercell at sunset is an unforgettable experience. The air grows heavy with the scent of rain, and the distant rumble of thunder provides a soundtrack to the visual spectacle. Farmers and storm chasers alike pause to witness the sky’s drama, knowing that these storms can bring both vital rain and potential destruction to the region’s corn and soybean fields. The fleeting moments when the sun’s last rays pierce through breaks in the storm clouds create a sense of timelessness, connecting the observer to the raw, untamed spirit of the Plains. In Nebraska, September sunsets paired with thunderstorms and supercells are not just weather events—they’re a vivid reminder of nature’s ability to inspire wonder and respect in equal measure.

I feel like something is...off with the world. I do not feel overly confident in my ability to describe adequately what I mean, though. It feels like...like when a spinning top is spun and you tap the side - that way it wobbles - it feels like that: like things are not quite right. And for somebody who does not believe in things feeling such a way, it is even harder to describe.
It is odd at the moment. Whilst there are the usual berries on the bushes, and some of the trees have turned orange and lost their leaves, the majority have remained green and held fast to their leaves. The day was fine, if slightly cooler, but if anyone were to have told me it was Spring I would probably have believed them. There were even buds on some of the trees that do not usually have buds at this time of year. In places, it is like Autumn has not arrived at all.

January 31 is International Zebra Day! Celebrate by sharing some fun facts about zebras with your friends and family.
A zebra’s stripe patterns are unique to each individual, just like a human fingerprint.
Animal experts believe the disorienting pattern of the stripes deter biting flies from zeroing in on zebras. Flies navigate by perceiving the light reflecting off of surfaces, and they prefer to land on solid dark surfaces. They will typically avoid zebras altogether.
Even at birth, a foal’s legs are already almost as long as those of an adult. Within 20 minutes of birth, the zebra is on the run and uses this amazing ability as its primary method to evade predators.
The hind legs of zebra can deliver powerful kicks to break the jaw of a predator, like a lion, and they can even run at top speeds of almost 40 miles per hour.
This lovely herd of Plains zebra (Equus quagga), was photographed during a photography safari on a late evening game drive in a downpour around Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya.
I marvelled at the Tricolored Heron's (Egretta tricolor) uncanny ability to concentrate on the task at hand... stealthily stalking and motionlessly waiting for an opportunity to strike its prey. They also move rapidly and use their wings (similar to Reddish Egrets) when fishing in shallow waters. Copyright © Kim Toews/All Rights Reserved.

This species has the ability to hibernate as an adult even through our very cold winter. They are not migratory. It is possible that this individual might survive for 12 more months here and live to produce its own eggs. It is one of the longest living Butterflies.
I have never seen a Mourning Cloak nectaring on a flower. The adults live on tree sap, ripe and fallen fruit, the sugary exudes of Aphids, animal feces, and minerals found in mud puddles and gravel.

Another image of my favorite mockingbird.
The northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottos) is the only mockingbird commonly found in North America. This bird is mainly a permanent resident, but northern birds may move south during harsh weather.
This species has rarely been observed in Europe. The northern mockingbird is known for its mimicking ability, as reflected by the meaning of its scientific name, "many-tongued mimic".
The northern mockingbird is an omnivore. It eats both insects and fruits. It is often found in open areas and forest edges but forages in grassy land.
The northern mockingbird breeds in southeastern Canada, the United States, northern Mexico, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands and the Greater Antilles.
The northern mockingbird is listed as of Least Concern according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The northern mockingbird is known for its intelligence. A 2009 study showed that the bird was able to recognize individual humans, particularly noting those who had previously been intruders or threats. Birds recognize their breeding spots and return to areas in which they had greatest success in previous years. Urban birds are more likely to demonstrate this behavior. - Wikipedia

The ability to appreciate metaphor opens the way to greater mysticism. So, for example, as artistic and well-executed as a Greek icon is, it is never to be considered a mere decoration. Rather, it is a window into the realm of God, and when we gaze upon the icon, we enter the divine realm while it simultaneously permeates us. Furthermore, because the icon makes the “invisible reality…more perceptible” it can be “as effective as printed or spoken words—perhaps for some people, even superior to words,” as a vehicle of the holy.

I have been hanging out in the Cloud lakes sim with the new bladerunner theme and so in awe of this creators talent. What I find so amazing is the creator's ability to produce time after time incredible laid out builds. The materials used in some of the buildings will be the subject for a new batch of images as soon as I can work out a great outfit.

i hope you all aren't getting bored of my overused model at the moment.
cause i enjoy going on photo adventures with her and she's awesome-ly photogenic.
i'll find more people though!
anyways, i'm procrastinating on my speech this weekend.
i feel like i'm not putting as much effort into this 365 either.
i've felt my creativity and the ability to take a 365 for each day go down hill and instead find myself uploading and using photos from 2 days...sometimes even from a week ago. i feel like i've cheated in this project.

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species (the Japanese sea lion) in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean. They have an average lifespan of 20–30 years. A male California sea lion weighs on average about 300 kg (660 lb) and is about 2.4 m (8 ft) long, while the female sea lion weighs 100 kg (220 lb) and is 1.8 m (6 ft) long. The largest sea lion is Steller's sea lion, which can weigh 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) and grow to a length of 3.0 m (10 ft). Sea lions consume large quantities of food at a time and are known to eat about 5–8% of their body weight (about 6.8–15.9 kg (15–35 lb)) at a single feeding. Sea lions can move around 16 knots (30 km/h; 18 mph) in water and at their fastest they can reach a speed of about 30 knots (56 km/h; 35 mph). Three species, the Australian sea lion, the Galápagos sea lion and the New Zealand sea lion, are listed as endangered. 14674
The Peacock Flower holds symbolic importance in some cultures, often associated with beauty, pride, and joy.
This plant is often celebrated for its spectacular flowers and its ability to bring a tropical touch to gardens and landscapes.
The Peacock Flower produces beautiful, showy flowers in shades of red, orange, yellow, or a combination of these, often resembling a peacock's tail in appearance.
The flowers are large, with long stamens that contribute to their dramatic look.
The plant itself can grow as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of 3 to 5 feet (1 to 1.5 meters), though it can grow taller in ideal conditions.
The leaves are finely divided, giving the plant a feathery or fern-like texture.
All losses are caused by different reasons, but a select few of them happen because something was straight out taken from us, or we were taken ourselves. Imagine being not only stripped of your clothes, your dignity, and your pride, but also being forced to go along for the ride. A ride that involves no acceptance, no going with the flow, no ability to fight, just being absolutely forced to comply with everything and everyone being taken from you.
This can all be metaphorical to describe a situation in your life, but it can also be exactly what it describes. Sex trafficking is still a very real thing and is one of the worst kind of losses you can go through as a human being. Did you know that over 27 million people a year are forced into jobs, not just sexual ones, but hard labor jobs as well? You hear about the numbers sometimes of women and girls forced to be sex slaves, but you don't hear about the number of slaves working on farms, ranches, in mines, and this doesn't even include the number of inmates locked up on bogus crimes and forced to do the jobs society has deemed undesirable. Silenced, subdued, shackled, and sometimes raped repeatedly, there are depths a person can fall into that are unimaginable while the rest of the world declares "We should do something." While sipping their starbucks, and going to get a massage on the weekend at the spa from one of the trafficked women in town.
Next time you feel like you've lost everything, just remember there's a lot further you could fall, and your situation can most likely be fixed a lot easier than some other people's darkest days.
Appropriately enough this replica of a statue of Saint Theodore, Patron Saint of Venice, Italy, is located at the Venetian in Las Vegas. It faces out towards the entrance to the building and is placed high on a large Roman column. Theodore was a Christian Roman soldier in the 3rd century who would not worship the pagan gods and was martyred as a result. He is holding a large spear and shield and is standing on a crocodile which is said to represent a dragon, symbolizing his ability to vanquish evil. Grabbed a shot from behind while passing through in the late afternoon. Here's a companion shot taken later that evening: flic.kr/p/2p6hgbG

Julius von Bismarck
Freedom Tree & Democracy Chair
2013
In his works Julius von Bismarck explores people’s ability to perceive, and he uses the laws of physics to challenge the way we are used to seeing things.
Suspended from the ceiling of the exhibition space, a blue office chair and a simple table each swing in a circular orbit.
At times the movement of table and chair is closely aligned, at other times out of sync. Moving in a rhythm of dance-like accompaniment, the two objects seem to have attained weightless freedom.
Computer-operated motors determine the chair and table’s precise circular paths, which have marginally deferred frequencies.
I have left out the rotary motor, the suspension cables and the corresponding chair to challenge your viewing habits even more ;-) ...

Lehrstuhl für Freiheitsbaum und Demokratie
2013

I always liked the combination of exercise, the wild areas and photography. Add in the ability to capture the night sky and it just became reasonable to purchase stock in coffee and concealer for those dark under eye rings. It's addictive enough to stand out in a dark wilderness field waiting for shutters to close, with nothing to distract me from assuming that every little noise is a bear coming to steal my cliff bar.
I'm making progress on getting rid of the noise, but it's still smoother in the large version - Click L

As important as education is to children so is the ability to be able to play, to socialize, imagine, be active, make friendships and just relax. I won't bother you with many links just the one below:

and may I add, even as an old adult one can still have an enormous amount of pleasure playing as I have done with this work manipulating many different photos! My moto "never stop playing!"
Ability of light to pierce through the space is very nice to catch on a photo. Yet it creates a contrast that can easily turn to overburn. I'm dealing with that art my whole photo-life and never really get the grasp on it. The light is burning through my space and my lenses. I must try a neutral density filter someday. But I always remember that AFTER the photoshoot, haha...
Eyelashes have the impressive ability to transform your face. Eyelashes complement the face as does lipstick, however eyelashes may actually even do it more.
Take these [Pink&Love] Oh My Autumn Lashes for example. These EvoX lashes draw a contrast between my eyes and eyelids - just like lipstick draws attention to the contrast between my lips and its surrounding facial features.
Long eyelashes could be flirtatious indicators for men, since we tend to blink more slowly than men do. This soft and fluttering accentuating signal undoubtedly serves us as a means of expressing our attractiveness.
Lipstick has been used for centuries by women all over the world to enhance their appearance, express themselves, and feel more confident. I complemented my looks with SENTINUS BEAUTY Ivana Lipstick to draw attention to my lips by making them look fuller and more defined.
To help remind me of my next date, I am wearing this SO SILLY Interactive Fruity Watch. Like my smart watch in RL, it is very fun to wear since it sequentially rolls through different dial faces.

Taxi to SWANK Fall into Autumn Event:
Friends
Deep in the woods, I followed a trail aimlessly, high above Lake George. It had been a wet autumn, and when I came across a creek flowing nicely, I followed as the mountain steepened, and the pace sped up. Above a deceptively deep pool, I was captivated by a cascade, grouped together with a large erratic, bearded in ferns, and a beech glowing in autumn’s yellow. For quite some time I lingered here, unsure of what it was that drew me in. When I left, I still couldn’t see what I see here now. I had found a circle. It’s not perfect, I had to connect the parts. An anchor, deposited in some ice age, by a glacier that probably scraped the bedrock for the stream, whose part of the arc is fluid, changing. A tree, whose branches reach high and wide, to shelter, and embrace. It is a triad, an arrangement of subjects, and lately I realized they are not unlike the friends we are. They were thrown together randomly, like we were, since some time long ago, a time that begs remembrance, but won’t get it here. It suffices that we simply are. We could probably assign some element in that scene to describe ourselves. More likely, there are parts of all of these, in each of us. Sometimes we are lost from each other, invisible in a thick fog. Buried under a blanket of weather. Incommunicado in the darkest night. But the circle always comes back around, and completes as though it was never broken. There is nothing as precious as that ability-- to continue as though time has no passage. It is probably a trick of the mind, but I always think of us as we appeared to each other when we met. Whether our circle has expanded to great distances, or shrunk to the size of a three way hug, we are bound in our hearts timelessly, as surely as my glade in the forest…tres amigos. Friends.
I don't have an ID for this opuntia. We used to call any cactus that looked like this a Beaver-Tail, but that doesn't tell you much. It's always a beautiful plant, but it is particularly so when blooming, and when setting fruit.
Thanks for commenters identifying this cactus as Opuntia Microdasys Albispina.
Knowing the species, I looked it up in Wikipedia, and found this interesting tidbit: "Native to Mexico, naturalised in Kenya, Malawi, and Tanzania.[5] One reason for the success of O. microdasys in desert habitats - at home and as an introduction - is its efficient fog collection ability. The spines and hairs have the perfect structure and microstructure to capture and channel fog.[6]."
