A Flanders' winter-sunset

I waited a long time for the right moment, was on my way home when I saw this in the side mirror.

I left my car on the side of the narrow road, grabbed my camera.

This is so very typical, the gnarled willows to keep the flat land 'dry', the sky reaching poplars, the majestic elm trees standing tall against the North wind.

In winter the sun just drops, eh?

So, only one negative!

Nikon F4 and 400asa film, scanned from neg and comp in camera!

Ah well I got it, went home a happy bunny... M, (*_~)

Holly berries are somewhat toxic to humans, though their poisonous properties are overstated and fatalities almost unknown.

They are extremely important food for numerous species of birds and are also eaten by other wild animals.

In the fall and early winter the berries are hard and apparently unpalatable.

After being frozen or frosted several times, the berries soften, and become milder in taste.

During winter storms, birds often take refuge in hollies, which provide shelter, protection from predators (by the spiny leaves) and food.

Most festive!!

Surprise, our dog, a Border Collie, didn't want to go out in this weather, although he loved snow.

Could you blame him?

But I was determined to make a beautiful shot that day.

I even risked my precious camera...

I'm convinced it is meant to hang outside your front-door, me I put it on the table with a big candle, most romantic and colourful.

This will be to be many different things...

However, due to Covid, there will be some old faves!

As there is no Christmas market, the shops closed for over a month and in lockdown, I think a good image is always a good image!

Of seasonal plants!

Symphoricarpos, with common names in English of Snowberry, Waxberry or Ghostberry, is a small genus of about 15 species of deciduous shrubs in the honeysuckle family, Caprifoliaceae.

Common Snowberry (S. albus) is an important winter food source for quail, pheasant and grouse, but is considered poisonous to humans.

A WINTER'S DALE... by magda indigo

A typical Yorkshire Dales' view, with old gnarled trees, the sheep and the ever ongoing dry-stone walls drawing dark dividing lines through the land.

The light was golden, the air crisp and clear, I love Winter.

It reminds me of the paintings of one of the Brueghel's.

Since it was taken with 400 asa film, I reduced the grain for once, however the main reason was to get that 'paint' effect that the famous Flemish painter's family BRUEGHEL and others put in their paintings.

This was how I saw it, a bright sky and some mystery in the trees, the cold wind gently blurring my tear-filled eyes.

This image is an artistic interpretation.

Festive fragrances for Christmas

Mulled wine is a drink usually made with red wine along with various spices and fruits.

It is served hot or warm and may be alcoholic or non-alcoholic. It is traditional during winter, especially around Christmas also called Glühwein.

It was first recorded as spiced and heated in First Century Rome.

The Romans travelled all across Europe, conquering much of it and trading with the rest.

The legions brought wine and viticulture with them up to the Rhine and Danube rivers and to the Scottish border bringing their recipes with them.

Very much part of tradition now!

well, I bought them on sale last year after the festive season, stored them and then forgot all about them, so what a wonderful discovery, they still were't cheap, but oh so gorgeous.

Like mini 'Faberge' eggs, I promptly photographed them before the went up with the decorations.

December, when the cupboard in the attic opens again, the boxes come out and oooh: the re-discovery of favourite baubles…

THE HOLLY AND THE IVY… by magda indigo

"The Holly and the Ivy" is a traditional British folk Christmas carol.

"The holly and the ivy, now are both well grown"

The Holly and the Ivy is thought to have Pagan origins and could therefore date back over 1000 years.

It is most unusual for a carol like the Holly and the Ivy to have survived over the years especially during the stern protestant period of the 17th century.

The Holly and the Ivy have always been taken indoors during the winter, the hope being that the occupants would survive difficult conditions just like the hardy Holly and the Ivy.

The colours of the Holly and Ivy, green and red are traditionally associated with Christmas.

This flat, windswept land, so fertile, so mutilated in the past.

The stretch behind the dunes is still, like in the Middle Ages, dotted with those 'round' villages.

Church and graveyard in the center, houses around in a circle, the road, often still cobblestones, meandering through it.

Flanders... where I was born...

It was a soft wind-still evening, a beautiful silence caressed my ears, the layered fog effacing whole sections of the land from my eyes, trailing capriciously in the sigh of the sunset...

I left the bottom in because that's how it was, grey and darker and lighter again.

On a stormy Sunday in December, on a visit to one of my sons, and his little family, who lives in Holland, the beach called...

I'm one of those people who just loves the beach and the sea during winter, warm clothes, good boots, fight the wind and the elements.

Then come home all aglow and rejuvenated.

Ready for a nice cup of hot chocolate?

It also gives for many a great image and often strange colour skies on film.

It was in Katwijk, Holland, A North Sea Beach, I so enjoyed it.

This is a bunch to hang up, baubles, hearts and stars in glass, I immediately saw several compositions (in the shop already), had great fun in the studio!

Now, as I told you, from when I was a little girl, I have always loved red ribbon, so well served here.

Often it is easier to pin down why you do not like something.

I was wondering why this photo was so appealing to me. Started to analyse… so, the red ribbon, and then, LOVE… this month people will gather and give.

I have a feeling that December can be an ‘emotional’ month, where we ponder over the past year…

So now I know why I like it. Happiness all around!

Star anise is a star-shaped, dark brown pod that contains a pea-size seed in each of its eight segments.

Native to China and Vietnam, star anise comes from a small evergreen tree.

Its flavour is slightly more bitter than that of regular anise seed.

Cinnamon is a spice obtained from the inner bark of several trees from the genus Cinnamomum that is used in both sweet and savoury foods.

Cinnamon has been known from remote antiquity. It was imported to Egypt as early as 2000 BC.

Cinnamon was so highly prized among ancient nations that it was regarded as a gift fit for monarchs and even for a god: a fine inscription records the gift of cinnamon and cassia to the temple of Apollo at Miletus.

Though its source was kept mysterious in the Mediterranean world for centuries by the middlemen, who handled the spice trade, to protect their monopoly as suppliers, cinnamon is native to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Malabar Coast of India, and Burma.

Physalis is characterised by the small orange fruit similar in size, shape and structure to a small tomato, but partly or fully enclosed in a large papery husk derived from the calyx. The berry also goes by the names Golden Strawberry,Chinese Lantern and Cape gooseberry.

Not all Physalis species bear edible fruit. Select species are cultivated for their edible fruit, however; the typical Physalis fruit is similar to a firm tomato in texture, and like strawberries or pineapple in flavour, with a mild acidity.

Physalis fruit is a good source of vitamin C, beta-carotene, iron, calcium and trace amounts of B vitamins. These fruits contain 18 kinds of amino acids .

These berries are also abundant in polysaccharides, compounds that may help fortify the immune system.

This captures the vibe so well for me.

A shop in York, in the old section.

A street full of discoveries, Stonegate runs above the main Roman road the Via Praetoria, now several feet below the busy shopping street.

The Roman road led from the Basilica, the headquarters of the Roman military, crossing the Ouse to the civilian west bank.

Stonegate would have been the most direct route for transporting limestone for the construction of the Minster, brought into the city by river from the quarry at Tadcaster.

This may explain the origin of the street’s name although it was the first stone-paved road in York and had retained its Roman-built paved surface.

The name Stonegate appears on records as early as 1118.

Are they nuts?

Are they fruity?

Well, they are both, did some shopping and there are some lovely foods around, I thought this one so good looking that I bought it, ... to photograph= double pleasure, afterwards, you enjoy your props and eat them! Hihi.

It is a tray with roasted hazelnuts, dried cranberries, blueberries, Sicilian pistachios, blanched almonds, sour cherries and mulberries.
