Newton gets selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars
The second half of September is always an exciting one. After all, it’s the time when the Film Federation of India (FFI) decides which film should be the official entry of India to the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. And this time, it’s a Hindi film that has got the coveted chance. That flick is none other than Eros International and Colour Yellow Productions’ Newton, which incidentally has also released today in theatres.
Newton is a story of a rookie government officer who goes to the Naxal-infested jungles of Chhattisgarh to conduct free and fair elections there and how his righteousness leads to hilarious and even shocking consequences. The lead role is essayed by Rajkummar Rao and the film also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Raghubir Yadav, Anjali Patil and Raghubir Yadav. It is directed by Amit Masurkar, who rose to prominence with the indie film Sulemani Keeda. Newton had its world premiere at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.
Aanand L Rai of Colour Yellow Productions said, “Good films need to reach the audience. Period. We as a production company are lucky to be in a place that we can be instrumental in this process. Over the years people have found connect with Colour Yellow Productions and good storytelling and we don’t want to let go of any opportunity that we get in this regard. This is the second time in years that a film currently running in theatres has been selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. The last such film in recent times that also had a similar experience was the 2012 film Barfi, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz. The selection of Barfi however led to major controversies as the film was criticized for lifting scenes from prominent Hollywood and other world cinema films. The year after, 2013, saw the biggest fight of Oscar race ever. A small Gujarati film, The Good Road, was sent to Oscars which angered and shocked everyone in the industry. It was the same year when The Lunchbox, starring Irrfan Khan, Nimrat Kaur and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, had hit screens and had created waves across the world like never before. It was believed that The Lunchbox had high chances of picking an Oscar and that India lost a chance of winning the golden trophy. From 2014 onwards however, all the choices have been controversy-free – the small budget Liar’s Dice, hard-hitting Marathi film Court and the intense Tamil thriller Visaranai respectively.
The collections of Newton have been very poor till now and it remains to be seen if this news give a boost to its earnings in the days to come.

REVEALED: Varun Dhawan to play laborer in YRF’s Sui Dhaaga
While he is all set for his twin role debut in Judwaa 2, Varun Dhawan will soon start prepping for his next, Yash Raj Films’ Sui Dhaaga. Earlier we had reported that for the first time ever Varun will be paired opposite Anushka Sharma for a forthcoming film titled Sui Dhaaga and now it is being said that the actor will be seen in the role of a labourer in the film.
From what we hear, Varun Dhawan will be seen in the role of a hired help in the film which is is directed by Dum Laga Ke Haisha fame Sharat Katariya. On the other hand, details of Anushka Sharma’s role in the film are yet to be revealed. The film aims to bring forth the condition of local cottage industries and revolves around dignity of labour among others. Earlier, Varun had mentioned that the film endorses the mantra of ‘Made of India’ and that it is relevant story even in today’s times. Producer Maneesh Sharma of YRF too had stated that the film has its roots in the heart of India and that it reflects the passion that runs through the veins of every Indian.
Sui Dhaaga is currently in its initial stage and is slated to go on floor in January next year. Although Varun Dhawan has previously played many roles, this will be the first time where the actor will be seen in such a character of a poor labourer.
As for other films, post the Jab Harry Met Sejal debacle, Anushka Sharma is now focusing on her production Pari which also features her in the lead role. She will also be seen in Aanand L. Rai’s next starring Shah Rukh Khan and Katrina Kaif. Whereas Varun Dhawan has kick started the promotions of Judwaa 2 along with co-stars Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles since the film is only few weeks away from its release.

Shah Rukh Khan’s recent film Jab Harry Met Sejal has proved to be a big disaster at the box office. Since the past two years, Shah Rukh Khan wasn’t having a great run. Yet, his films were having respectable figures at the box office. Dilwale and Raees underperformed but managed to go beyond 130-crore-mark. Fan failed to cross 100-crore-mark but it was argued it was not a typical entertainer. With Jab Harry Met Sejal, all excuses dried up as it was a romantic film starring a prominent actress, Anushka Sharma, as his co-star and replete with foot-tapping songs. Yet, it failed to excite audiences.
So now what should be the next step of Shah Rukh Khan to get back in the top league? Harveen Singh, distributor from Rajasthan, said, “Shah Rukh Khan should play roles that suit his age.” Another leading distributor Rajesh Thadani also had the same views. He said, “He should choose the right kind of roles. He can’t be romancing younger heroines at this age. He should gravitate towards mature, content-driven roles.”
Trade analyst Atul Mohan feels action can work for him. He implied, “He should do more action roles and films like Don. Don 3 is a great idea. His role in Raees was also interesting but the film suffered due to clash with Kaabil. Not just action but even what he did in Dear Zindagi was impressive. Chak De India was highly inspiring.” He added, “There can be some elements of romance as well. Or maybe Karan Johar can perhaps come up with good romantic film for him. Even doing a sci-fi won’t be wrong, provided the script is first-rate. Ra.One, I feel, came a bit too early.” But he had an important piece of advice here, “Whatever he does, it should be one level up.” Rajesh Thadani also emphasized for films that have a bigger appeal. “The narration can’t be abstract that would limit the audiences,” he said. Another reputed trade analyst Amod Mehra was more critical about Shah Rukh Khan’s choice of directors. He said, “He is doing silly films. Signing Farah Khan and Rohit Shetty’s films sounded the death knell for him.”
Both Atul Mohan and Amod Mehra admitted that Shah Rukh Khan can take a leaf out of Aamir Khan’s choice of films. Atul Mohan said, “Gradually, he should plan to go the Amitabh Bachchan way. Even at this age, Big B is playing prominent roles and getting appreciation. Also, what Aamir Khan did in Dangal is something that Shah Rukh Khan should take note of. At the same time, once in a while, he can also do an action film. In short, he should plan his moves for the next five years.” Amod Mehra gave an in-depth analysis to justify why Aamir Khan can serve as a good source of inspiration. He explained, “Aamir Khan is not doing the typical hero roles. He’s doing character-based roles and his track record is impeccable. Look at his recent films. He played an alien in PK; in Dhoom 3, he was the anti-hero and also had a double role. In Dangal, he played a father to four girls and he was not even there in the climax. In 3 Idiots, he was one of the three heroes. Shah Rukh Khan should follow Aamir Khan’s path. He should not try to be young. He should play Shah Rukh Khan the actor and not Shah Rukh Khan the hero”
Shah Rukh Khan’s next film is with Aanand L Rai in which he plays a dwarf. Again, it’s an unconventional film and it remains to be seen if it works for the superstar. Harveen Singh said, “That particular film seems interesting. Working with a hit director is always a safer bet. He needs a good director and a good script” Amod Mehra however is unsure. He opined, “Doing Aanand L Rai’s film is a gamble – it may or not work. But at least, he has something interesting lined up.”
Self-acclaimed critic Kamaal R Khan’s advice for Shah Rukh Khan shocked us all. He matter-of-factly said, “Shah Rukh Khan should now retire and sit at home. He should launch his son Aryan. Maybe he can play his father’s role in his film” And what are his views on Aanand L Rai’s film? “He should shelve that film,” he signed off!

While there have been several reports doing the rounds about the forthcoming film of Shah Rukh Khan, here is a major revelation about the same. While we told you that next with Aanand L. Rai finally received its title and the film will be called Batlaa. We have come to now know that is one of titles that is being considered is Batlaa. While co-producers Red Chillies, had registered Batlaa, some people from the creative team felt it might sound a bit uncool hence they have registered three more titles very recently and will decided one soon. These titles are Dwarf, Bauna (dwarf in Hindi) and Zero.
The film was originally titled Batlaa since Shah Rukh Khan will be playing the role of a dwarf. Aanand L. Rai recently during an interview had stated that while the film was often being referred to as the dwarf film, he maintained that it is beyond the character of a dwarf and is a story about a man and woman. Bauna, Dwarf and Zero are also being considered as titles and finally Rai may just leave it to the fans to decide which to go with.
Ever since its inception, this film has had many speculations around it from the title to leading ladies to news about SRK playing a double role. While the filmmaker denied all the reports about the superstar’s double role, it was later also unveiled that Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma will be playing leading ladies in the film. Aanand L. Rai voluntarily shortens Ayushmann Khuranna – Bhumi Pednekar’s kiss in Shub Mangal Saavdhan
Although director R S Prasanna’s Shubh Mangal Savdhaan is based on the theme of a sexual dysfunction, the film’s co-producer Aanand Rai was determined to keep the proceedings sundar swach and susheel.
Not a moment of suggestiveness has been allowed to creep up in the film’s playing time. In fact so determined was Aanand to keep the proceedings clean and above-board that he actually reduced the length of a vital lip lock between the lead pair.
Says the film’s leading man Ayushmann Khurrana, “Yes, we do have a kiss, and Aanand Sir has reduced its length. We don’t want Shubh Mangal Savdhaan be even remotely offensive to any section of the audience. It’s a film targeted at family audiences. And the kiss has been modified accordingly.”
This is not the first time that a filmmaker has opted for a voluntary cut to keep the family audience happy. In Jolly LLB 2, references to ‘Bata Shoe Company’ were removed by the film’s makers before being submitted to the audience. Even in the controversial Lipstick Under My Burkha the director chose to voluntarily reduce the length of a love-making scene.
In the recent A Gentleman, Sidharth Malhotra and Jacqueline Fernandez just wouldn’t stop kissing for a sequence even when the co-director ordered ‘cut’. So the kiss was cut on the editing table.

More recently, it was revealed that the said film which is yet to be titled would feature Shah Rukh Khan’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan co-stars Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the leading roles as well.
Well now we hear that, Shah Rukh Khan will be seen playing a double role in the film. Though an official confirmation on the same is awaited it is learnt that while one of Shah Rukh Khan’s characters will be a dwarf in the film, the other will be a regular charismatic character that the actor is known for.
As for the film itself, the yet untitled venture that commenced shooting in May is expected to release towards the end of 2018.

Aanand L Rai asserts that Shah Rukh Khan will win his audience again with his film
Filmmaker Aanand L Rai’s film with Shah Rukh Khan became a talking point since the two collaborated for the first time. What further triggered interest further was the storyline which will feature the superstar as a dwarf. While director Rai is more than happy to work with Shah Rukh, he can’t stop gushing about the bonding he has started to share with the actor, especially over cinema and food.
When in a recent interview, Aanand L Rai approached the subject of the recent box office failure of Shah Rukh Khan’s last film Jab Harry Met Sejal; the filmmaker remained undeterred towards his love for the superstar and has asserted to resurrect the fan base of the actor. Aanand revealed that his past performance at the box office hasn’t affected the film and if anything, the filmmaker is just as enthusiastic about the film. While he does want to overlook the box office numbers, he also stated that this has not affected Shah Rukh Khan the least bit but what the superstar is more afraid of is losing the love of his fans.
On the other hand, Aanand L. Rai assures that his film will bridge Shah Rukh Khan’s relation with his fans. The filmmaker further mentioned that he can sense what the audience is seeking to find and he clearly stated how he will work hard and retain his sincerity towards the craft. Aanand also explained how he wouldn’t let the previous releases cloud his work and that he will be striving himself to do a good job this time. At the same time, he also maintained that they are having fun whilst working.
As for the film itself, we hear that the untitled film features Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in leading roles but the rest of the details are yet to be finalized. While there are reports that Shah Rukh Khan will play a double role in the film, spokespersons of the film have denied the same.

Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan have not worked together for the last three years, since their last film Happy New Year (2014). This gave rise to speculations that things were strained between the two on the professional front and it would take some time before they did a film together again. But last week, when Farah was shooting for the Indian version of Lip Sing Battle which she is hosting for Star Plus, Shah Rukh Khan casually strolled in and put to rest all the rumours. And the next day, it was Farah’s turn to surprise her friend Shah Rukh as she visited his Ted Talks (which SRK is hosting) show which is right across to hers.
Says a source present on both the sets, “Farah and Shah Rukh have been shooting in YRF Studios in Andheri, one set one and two which are very close to each other. Farah and Shah Rukh both have already started shooting for the shows. After Shah Rukh visited Farah on her sets, the next day when Shah Rukh was shooting he was surprised by Farah on his Ted Talks set. He took her on a tour of the set, had lunch together and they again chatted for quite some time. They even discussed doing a film together soon so there’s a possibility of something happening on that front in the new future. Shah Rukh and Farah have given some blockbusters including Main Hoon Na, Om Shanti Om and Happy New Year and fans are eager to see them again together. Farah is yet to announce her next film and Shah Rukh hasn’t signed any post his film with Aanand L Rai.”
Farah’s show Lip Sing Battle is based on celebrities from across professions, appearing on the show and competing with each other by lip-syncing to songs. Adds the source, “She was stunned when SRK walked in and hugged her on the sets of Lip Sing Battle. They chatted for an hour and caught up on work and their families. It was just like it was before as their camaraderie and warm friendship was just the same as ever. The super star danced to iconic song ‘Deewangi Deewangi’ from their film Om Shanti Om.”
