Steht in Aachen am Europaplatz

View from the Lousberg in Aachen over the city. The town hall (Rathaus) is clearly visible and you can see the Aachener Dom (Cathedral) behind it.

Aachen Cathedral was one of Charlemagne’s grand projects he wanted to create a cathedral that connected heaven to Jerusalem, construction began from 796 until its final consecration in 805.

Charlemagne was laid to rest in the cathedral in 814 and was canonized by Emperor Barbarossa in 1165 beginning a long draw of religious pilgrimages to the Dom.

A legend goes that the people of Aachen halfway through the construction of the Dom ran out of money for further building and they made a deal with the devil for the money to complete the Dom.

The Devil struck a bargain requiring the first to enter the Dom upon its completion to surrender his soul to him, the people of Aachen being a smart bunch upon the cathedral’s completion sent a wolf into the entrance and the devil quickly came for his soul and realizing he had been had the devil stormed out in a fit of rage.

On his way out it is said that he severed his thumb in the mouth of the cast lion head door handles, today you can see a statue of the wolf near the Dom entrance to commemorate the story and if you reach into the lions mouth door handle you can still feel the devils thumb.

Disclaimer: Not trying to be realistic in my editing there is enough realism in the world, my style is a mix of painterly and romanticism as well as a work in progress.

Aachen, Germany (2008)

The Cathedral of Charles the Great (Charlemagne), the uprising of Europe. This building is so beautiful. People who come in, standing mostly on the threshold and are marveling at this building. But the most forget, that building is in process over so many time. You will discover many, many elements of Art Nouveau.
