The small town of Superior, AZ is about 60 miles east of Phoenix. It was founded early in the last century as a result of huge nearby mining operations. Mining has reduced and the town has struggled as a result. These church buildings have changed hands a number of times.

Metamorphic conglomerate, 1.805 million years (Ma). The pebbles in the conglomerate are flattened and elongatedby the pressure as this sedimentary rock was subducted deep into the crust. The red clast is banded iron deposit (red is hematite). Size of specimen is 6" across
Im warmen Rheintal hält der Frühling naturgemäß eher Einzug als im Rest des Landes. Besonders viele Obstbäume findet man um Filsen. Der Ort an der rechten Rheinstrecke bot auch die Bühne für die Dispolok E 189 920 mit dem AZ 13313, einem DB AutoZug von Villach nach Dortmund im April 2006. Die Lok war übrigens für SBBC bestimmt, ging aber nach einem Unfall bei Siemens und Reparatur in den Disoplok Pool über. Sie trägt heute nach Umbau die Nummer 189 150.

AZ in the Rhine Valley
Spring naturally arrives earlier in the warm Rhine Valley than in the rest of the country. There are particularly many fruit trees around Filsen. The location on the right-hand Rhine route also provided the stage for the dispatch locomotive E 189 920 with the AZ 13313, a DB AutoZug from Villach to Dortmund in April 2006. Incidentally, the locomotive was intended for SBBC, but went to Siemens for repairs after an accident the Disoplok pool. After renovation, it now bears the number 189 150.

Lunar Eclipse

We had a few minutes to view the total eclipse before some high clouds covered the show. I'm always amazed at how dark a lunar eclipse is.

I was amazed at the lengths some photogs were going to hang over the edge and get this shot... I wasn't so keen hence the rocks in the foreground! In any case, it is a beautiful place. If you need a sense of scale, look for the boat and tent on the beach.
