I did not expect at all to meet this little dude ...

At first, I had absolutely no idea what it was, I did not know that crane nestlings were reddish like that and it was more or less swimming on the water like a duck.

I should have known though, as 2 minutes before I was secretly trying to approach a pair of common cranes in the swamp, that eventually flew away. I had never thought about where Common cranes are nesting, I was assuming it was way more in the north of Europe.

Anyway after taking a shot, I did not stay much longer to avoid creating too much disturbance :(

The Fountain of the Bicchierone is one of two fountains created for the Villa by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was made between 1660 and 1661 on a commission from Cardinal Rinaldo I d'Este. The basin of the fountain is in the form of a large shell, which reaches up to the level of the terrace. In the center is a toothed Bicchierone (cup or chalice) from which the water sprays upwards. Bernini supervised the building of the fountain, and, following its inauguration in May 1661, he had the height of the spouting water reduced, to avoid blocking the view from the Loggia of Pandora. Though not part of the original design of the garden, the fountain became a link between the architecture of the palace and the garden.

“The best way to waste your life, ... is by taking notes. The easiest way to avoid living is to just watch. Look for the details. Report. Don't participate.”

quote by Chuck Palahniuk

The Sölvesborg Bridge has been awarded one of the ten most interesting bridges in the world 2013. The bridge is the longest bicycle and pedestrian bridge in Europe and special attention has been given to the spectacular lighting design.

The Sölvesborg Bridge reaches across the bay of Sölvesborg, connecting the center of this Swedish town with a new housing district. Due to its spectacular design and lighting the Sölvesborg Bridge has given both residents of Sölvesborg and tourists a new exciting place to visit. People go for a walk or ride their bikes, they stop and look at the birdlife or they have pick nicks on the bridge, some even go fishing. In other words, the bridge functions as an urban space connecting urban life and nature – and it is the new landmark of the town.

The bridge consists of a higher part made out of three characteristic vaults and a long wooden bridge for pedestrians. Due to the length of the bridge, at intervals along the way parts of the nature have been accentuated with light, for example trees and reeds are lit. Lighting is integrated in the railing on one side along the whole bridge. The impressive vaults are lit with coloured light and a subtle light underneath the bridge gives reflections in the water.

The area around the bridge is a nature environment with a rich birdlife. The lighting has thus been made with respect for the birdlife and is inspired by the migration of the birds during the whole year. To give the bridge a unique night-time look, colour-changing luminaries have been used. The light can be controlled to avoid disturbing the area´s wildlife and the character of the bridge can change over the year and the night. A number of scenarios can be used for different events in the city.

The aim with the lighting design has been to turn the bridge into a landmark during the dark hours and at the same time pay respect to the environment in which it is located. To prevent a barrier effect the fixtures are mounted on the outside of the bridge, with a glare shield to hide the light sources. The several light scenarios that can be chosen make the experience of the bridge non-static. The visitors feel that the bridge is dynamic and almost a living organism in the environment.

Designboom is the world's first digital architecture and design magazine with a very influential and well-reputed cultural blog. Its focus is on news and key issues in the fields of architecture, design, technology and art. Each year Designboom lists the top 10 bridges in the world. In 2013 Designboom choose the Sölvesborg Bridge to be one of the most spectacular bridges in the world calling attention to its unique lighting design that enhances its landmark status.

The common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) is native to southeast North America. This reptile belongs to an ancient family (Chelydridae) that evolved in North America around 90 million years ago and has remained little changed since that time. Snapping turtles are omnivores and eat a wide variety of food sources including animals such as birds, frogs, snakes, fish and invertebrates as well as plants. During winter, they hibernate underwater in lakes and ponds buried in sediment in locations that do not freeze.

Contrary to popular belief, snapping turtles are not aggressive and much prefer to avoid confrontation. However, unlike most turtle species, snappers are unable to withdraw their heads fully into their shells for protection and have no choice but to defend themselves from predators and needless provocation by humans.

The photo shows a female snapping turtle searching for a suitable sandy nesting site where she can lay her eggs.

Unfortunately choice sites are often sandy areas by the side of roads or as in the photo on a gravel road in a wilderness area.

Hello World!

Precious Babies of Mother Nature,

I care about you, people!

In times of the coronavirus pandemic, you gotta spread something other than the virus... Like some love and affection (no touching, try words instead, you guys are good at that)... Or better yet, my wisdom.

So here are a few tips on how to stay safe:

Of course, you need to wash your hands (and take baths) more frequently. But remember to dry them well.

Please avoid getting a cold. Don’t go outside with your hair wet. Don’t wear wet clothes. Stay warm in your house. (#quarantinedays + #quarantinelove)

Sun is powerful. Let the rays of light enter your house. Do some sunbathing. We chickens like to take sunbaths in the dirt. So do what you gotta do and stay clean.

Don’t forget to take your medicine. And try not to get injured. Hospitals are pretty busy with patients with COVID-19.

Sleep well, eat great food, drink water. Don’t poison yourself. Avoid getting near fumes that can irritate your throat and nose.

And always remember ‘Balance is the key’.

My human friend will be sending some more tips soon. She also cares.

Let’s take care of one another. Stay safe. Respect your body. Respect the living creatures.

I have eggs to hatch (Go on and be productive as well!).

Peace out!

A northbound Lake States Railway train arrives at Saginaw MI. My trip trip to Michigan was decided due to the fact that it was one of very few states us New Yorkers were "allowed" to travel to at the time due to Covid. We went by Frankenmouth on the w/e and tourist were crammed into the village. We went back on a weekday. A few days after we returned, MI was added to the long list of places with high positives rates.

Baby birds are my theme for today. Here a shot of a hungry orphaned Tawny frogmouth chick that was raised by a neighbour.

The Tawny frogmouth is a unique bird native to Australia, often mistaken for an owl because of its nocturnal habits and similar appearance. However, it belongs to a different family altogether. Tawny frogmouths have distinctive wide, flattened beaks and large, yellow eyes. Their plumage is well-camouflaged with mottled patterns of gray, brown, and black, helping them blend seamlessly into tree bark.

These birds are known for their excellent mimicry; during the day, they remain very still, perching on branches and posing like broken stumps to avoid detection by predators. At night, they become active hunters, primarily feeding on insects and other small prey.

In my defense to avoid any punishment, I have been officially left unsupervised, and I take no responsibility for what happens!!

I have a nice variety of birds in my yard to keep me entertained while staying home to avoid Covid-19 The stay at home order, except for essential travel has been extended until the end of May, Yakima County, Washington. There may be some essential birds that I need to see away from home this week. Will post a few more yard bird photos latter.

Another shot of the domestic duck that was having fun in the canal. I don;t know if it finally found its way home, and I hope it managed to avoid the cookpot. Wildwood Park, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Visit as many museums as you possibly can. The images you see (painted, drawn, etched or photographed) will stay with you for the rest of your life. They will help you to discover good pictures in real life. Suppress any silly ambitions of becoming a great artist. Being a good photographer is difficult enough :-)

"Plastic Space" assumes the qualities of the third dimension utilizing overlapping elements, devoid of the traditional methods of indicating the depth of spacial penetration.

I had my eyes alert for quite a while for an example of such overlapping planes and volumes. Yes, there are some converging lines at the lateral peripheries. In the created world around us it is impossible to avoid leading lines while they are quite absent in nature.

Sandhill Crane Festival

Canadian Geese lift off from a farmers grain field at dusk. Still on the ground are flocks of Sandhill Cranes. The cranes flew over next, to stand in the water at night to avoid being eaten by predators.

Or in this case avoiding lens contact.

I think he was more worried about the photographer to my left with a huge telephoto lens (I can never understand why a photographer would walk around town with a full frame 400mm lens and use it).

In the past I have carried a Nikon D7100 with a Sigma 150-500mm zoom attached - trust me its not ideal for general street photography.

Even taking shots of a riot in Buenos Aires all it did was make me feel like a target (It did keep me a bit further from the "tear gas" - but not far enough). To be honest I wish I had stayed out of the way all together, you need to have a damned good reason to get "in amongst the action" .

(You know your shots or your presence is going to upset one side or the other).

Bright day so I was lucky the bird faced me and avoided the shadows that I got on the male birds.

Given the recent wintry weather, together with the substantial residential developments that have taken place in Harpur Hill since this image was taken, I've decided to shunt this shot forward from 8 years ago as a reminder of the rather more sleepy hamlet it used to be. The original upload has been deleted.

The main subject is the row of dwellings but, just above them, one of the few trains a day that use this active quarry line is discreetly approaching. Well, perhaps not so discreetly given a labouring locomotive and quite the climb at this point.

DBS shed 66154 is at the head of the 11.10am Tunstead - Briggs Sidings, Hindlow (6H22) 1600t loaded limestone. The train is unusually being top and tailed by unit 66238 just about visible at the back, this due to points damage at its destination caused by a derailment a month earlier.

As usual there's something uniquely attractive about a village in the snow and I snapped the train early to avoid drawing the eye too much away from the houses. Looks best full-screen, but not for everyone!

I avoided any curves when building the Federations latest interceptor to give it a sharp edged, aggressive feel.

No curves except this excellent new canopy in trans yellow that is. For this we have @pixarslightyear and Angus MacLane to thank for.

Good morning everyone. I'm pleased to present today a series on the usually very shy Gray Catbird (Dumetella carolinensis). Shy because Catbirds tend to be secretive and usually stay well hidden. They even avoid flying in the open if possible. Plus it's a bird I only see in the warmer months since it's not a year around resident.

Kind of a long series. Seven pics in total of which the rest can be found in the comment section and my stream. And in the caption under the later you'll find some text describing this unique bird.

So you'll know, Catbirds usually travel in pairs, but both gender are similar in appearance and nearly impossible to tell apart.

Thank you for stopping by...and I hope you have a truly nice day and weekend.

Burrowing Owl

The Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia) is a small, long-legged owl found throughout open landscapes of North and South America. Burrowing owls can be found in grasslands, rangelands, agricultural areas, deserts, or any other open dry area with low vegetation. They nest and roost in burrows, such as those excavated by prairie dogs. Unlike most owls, burrowing owls are often active during the day, although they tend to avoid the midday heat. Like many other kinds of owls, though, burrowing owls do most of their hunting from dusk until dawn, when they can use their night vision and hearing to their advantage. Living in open grasslands as opposed to forests, the burrowing owl has developed longer legs that enable it to sprint, as well as fly, when hunting.

Burrowing owls have bright eyes; their beaks can be dark yellow or gray depending on the subspecies. They lack ear tufts and have a flattened facial disc. The owls have prominent white eyebrows and a white "chin" patch which they expand and display during certain behaviors, such as a bobbing of the head when agitated.

Gatotkaca confronts Karna, the owner of the Kontawijaya weapon. He created a thousand twins of himself, making Karna feel confused. On Batara Surya's instructions, Karna managed to find the real Gatotkaca. He then fired his Konta weapon at Gatotkaca. Gatotkaca tried to avoid it by flying as high as possible. However, Kalabendana's spirit suddenly appeared to catch Kontawijaya while delivering news from heaven that Gatotkaca's death had been determined that night. Gatotkaca, who resigned himself to his fate, advised that his corpse could be used to kill enemies. Kalabendana agreed, then stabbed Gatotkaca's navel using a Konta weapon. The heirloom merged with the scabbard, namely the mastaba wood which was still stored in Gatotkaca's stomach. After Gatotkaca died, Kalabendana's spirit threw his body at Karna. Because he managed to jump and escape death. However, the train was shattered into pieces by Gatotkaca's body. The fragments of the train shot in all directions and killed the Korawa soldiers around it.
