Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

Some thirty-six years after taking the picture, I finally upload my very last in-service Trident photo (a grainy negative scan ;)

'FG was the very last Trident 2 in BA service! and lasted until April 1985! Only three other T2s made it into 1985: G-AVFO was retired in Jan, G-AVFE made it to February, and ex-Cypriot G-AZXM until April. The aircraft is carrying the later 'British' livery adopted by British Airways in the early 1980s. They were experimenting with an 'American' style abbreviated name - the experiment was quite short-lived!

G-AVFG c/n 2146 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in July 1968, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet six years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another eleven years, before being withdrawn finally in April 1985 - the very last Trident 2 in BA service!

Not as creepy as it looks actually. Karen had bought me an Aston Villa face mask during the pandemic. With not having need for it anymore, I suggested that it might be kinda cool to have one of those Styrofoam heads to mount it on. Well, sure enough, the Amazon guy is at the door with one. However, apparently in China (where it was made) folk don't have any ears so, neither did my new friend. In order to maintain the face covering in place, I plunked a pair of headphones over top and voila, he was all set to cheer on the lads.

Tends to hold his emotions in a bit better than me, I might add... nary a single swear word from 'im.

Alright, so maybe the Chiaroscuro lighting is a bit creepy but, that was unintentional, honest.

Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

Thirty-eight years after taking the picture, I finally upload my last Trident slide / transparency (just three negative scans left to go). In the late afternoon sunshine, the pilot of Trident 2E G-AVFG is evidently winding up the engines with the brakes on, about to go, judging by the angle of the nose :) A pair of BA 747s lurk in the background. I also managed to capture the newly built radar tower in the background :)

Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

Originally delivered to BEA in Jun 1968, G-AVFI - a Trident 2E in the later 'British' livery of British Airways, seen parked in the old BEA maintenance area at London Heathrow. The aircraft was one of the first Trident 2s to be taken out of service, being withdrawn the previous September, and was in the process of being stripped for spare parts before final scrapping commenced. Note that most of the windows have already been removed and replaced with plastic sheeting to keep the weather out!

Note also that the aircraft is carrying the revised 'British' livery. Around 1980, British Airways experimented with an 'American' style abbreviated name of 'British' seen here. The experiment was quite short-lived.

Parked to the right is fellow Trident 2E G-AVFC which was also being stripped. Note - 'FC is recorded as being broken up Nov 1981, but the slide was dated Feb 1982!

G-AVFI c/n 2148 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in Nov 1968, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet some six years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another seven years, before being withdrawn in Sep 1981. The aircraft was stripped of useful parts at London Heathrow and broken up there in May 1982.

Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

Originally delivered to BEA in December 1969, after being kept back with Hawker Siddeley for tests, this is one of the Trident 2Es that BEA and later British Airways operated so successfully in the 1970s. 'FA' is seen in a dilapidated state, dumped in the old BEA maintenance area at London Heathrow - photographed through the chain-link fence. The aircraft had been partially dismantled and was awaiting final cutting up. Just to the right is the remains of Trident 3B G-AWZB which was being disposed of at the same time. BA Lockheed TriStar-200 G-BHBR is parked up behind the Tridents. These were the days when you could drive round the whole of the Heathrow inner perimeter road at will, and park up in various locations to grab photos :)

G-AVFA c/n 2140 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in December 1969, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet five years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another nine years, before being withdrawn in March 1983 - being finally broken up on site at London Heathrow in January 1984.

View from the Queen's Building

A view from the old Roof Terrace of the Queen's Building at London Heathrow, showing the usual variety of aircraft which could be seen back in the 1970s.

One of the benefits of the old Instamatic cameras - I was attempting to capture the visiting Guinness Peat Boeing 707 in the background, which was working an Aer Lingus flight at the time. Inadvertently, I've captured a typical Terminal One line up of the period, in front of the old Queen's Building Roof Terrace - now long gone. Note the 'luxury 'chairs in the foreground, provided for visitors to watch the aircraft ;)

Also captured - the transition of liveries between the old BEA and the new BA scheme on the Tridents. I only have a couple of shots unfortunately of the old BEA livery :(

Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

On the day before my 20th birthday, I was wandering around the maintenance area at my home airport of London Heathrow. I took this shot through the old chain-link fence - hence the rather tight crop :) The following day I was up early for the drive to Mildenhall Air fete - and by the day after that, I was on a ship heading for Scandinavia!

Originally delivered to BEA in Jan 1969, G-AVFK - a Trident 2E in the later 'British' livery of British Airways, seen parked in the old BEA maintenance area at London Heathrow. The aircraft was one of the first Trident 2s to be taken out of service, being withdrawn the previous December, and was in the final stages of being stripped for spare parts before final scrapping commenced. Unlike with some of the Tridents dismantled here, the windows are still in place, but all the engines have been removed. The casing for the fourth 'booster' engine can be clearly seen under the rudder.

G-AVFK c/n 2150 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in Jan 1969, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet some five years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another seven years, before being withdrawn in Sep1981. The aircraft was stripped of useful parts at London Heathrow and broken up there in May 1982.

Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

On the day before my 20th birthday, I was wandering around the maintenance area at my home airport of London Heathrow. I took this shot through the old chain-link fence. The following day I was up early for the drive to Mildenhall Air fete - and by the day after that, I was on a ship heading for Scandinavia!

Originally delivered to BEA in Nov 1968, G-AVFH - a Trident 2E in the later 'British' livery of British Airways, seen parked in the old BEA maintenance area at London Heathrow. The aircraft was one of the first Trident 2s to be taken out of service, being withdrawn the previous October, and was in the process of being stripped for spare parts before final scrapping commenced. Note that most of the windows have already been removed and replaced with plastic sheeting to keep the weather out!

G-AVFH c/n 2148 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in Nov 1968, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet some six years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another seven years, before being withdrawn in Oct 1981. The aircraft was stripped of useful parts at London Heathrow and broken up there in May 1982.

This weeks theme is a tribute to a fellow flickrite who sadly passed away, so the 52 week 2017 group (nice one Raf) decided that the 60s would be fitting for Michael Leland www.flickr.com/photos/michael-leland he previously chose this theme for the group in the past .

And since I was also born in 67 and received these football programmes on my 40th birthday a few year back , I thought they would fit the theme perfectly .

My condolences to Michael's partner and family.

Through the late morning August heat haze shimmer, veteran BA Trident 2E G-AZXM taxies for a 28R take off at London Heathrow. A BA 747 noses in on the scenr from stage right.

G-AZXM c/n 2154 - Trident 2E - originally intended for BEA as G-AVFO, the aircraft was actually delivered new to Cyprus Airways as 5B-DAA in September 1969. After less than three years in service, on 15th March 1972, 5B-DAA lost its starboard undercarriage when it undershot the runway during a training flight at its Nicosia base. After extensive repairs lasting seven months and repainting in BEA colours registered G-AZXM, the aircraft was ferried back to Hatfield, and joined the BEA fleet at Heathrow in June 1972. Incorporated into the British Airways fleet some two years later, the aircraft flew with BA until January 1985, becoming one of the last Trident 2s in service. The aircraft was flown to Southend and broken up shortly after.

A Claret and Blue Rotunda, Birmingham, UK

I can't work it out.... My best shot is that it was an attempt at "AVFC" a rather bad one whilst hanging upside down. It can't be BCFC surely, even though St. Andrews is slightly closer to here, Saltley Viaduct that is.

G-AVFB c/n 2141 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in June 1968, this particular aircraft was leased to Cyprus Airways from 1973 to 1977 as 5B-DAC. On return to the UK, the aircraft was painted into BA colours and flew with BA for another five years, before being withdrawn in May 1982. Fortunately, the aircraft was then preserved by the Duxford Aviation Centre, and has been restored into original BEA livery. [see comments section below]

Is it me or does it look yellow ?

Apologies for the rather poor quality of this one but I must confess to having lifted it from a publicity item somewhere or other on the web.

Anyhow, this was the very last incarnation of 1 FTO to be delivered to the Flights Group whilst it was still wholly owned by the family and before troubled times saw the name pass through the hands of Dunn Line to subsequently become part of Rotala plc under the banner of Flights Hallmark.

Coach of the Year at Brighton in 2001, this Mercedes powered Neoplan N516SHD Starliner was delivered in October 2000 and is pictured at its spiritual home - Villa Park.

I had chance to look round this motor in some detail one day in the centre of Birmingham whilst it was being piloted by John Wood - long time AVFC team driver and "Guardian of 1 FTO" since the plate first appeared on the 1986 Setra Imperial. I was amazed to note that Flights usual attention to detail and comprehensive specification had even extended to having the Flights Travel Group logo incorporated into the centre caps of the wheel hubs !!!

Sadly, it was later painted into Hallmarks Silver based livery and, in my opinion, lost it's identity after that.

Trident Swansong 1980 - 1985

With only six months left in service G-AVFD - a Trident 2E in the later 'British' livery of British Airways lines up for a 28R take off in the early morning sunshine at London Heathrow.

Note the aircraft is carrying the revised 'British' livery. Around 1980, British Airways experimented with an 'American' style abbreviated name of 'British' seen here. The experiment was quite short-lived.

G-AVFD c/n 2143 - Trident 2E - delivered new to BEA in March 1968, and incorporated into the British Airways fleet six years later. The aircraft flew with BA for another eight years, before being withdrawn finally in March 1982. The aircraft was broken up just a month later at Heathrow.

One of the dying breed of Wright Sreetlite WF's with Axe Vale. New to Impact and here since late 2020 and like all of its ilk, looking fairly battered! The warranty claims on these were a large part of the reason for Wright's failure - a Solo on steroids and proof once again that copying a sucessful design doesn't work (cf. Volvo B6, DAF SB120, Plaxton Primo, etc).
