Als RS5 Sportback wurde das Fahrzeug auf der New York International Auto Show 2018 vorgestellt, welcher zunächst nur in den USA und Kanada eingeführt wurde. In Europa kam er erst im Februar 2019 in den Handel.

Produziert wird das Fahrzeug zusammen mit dem Audi R8 4S in der Sportwagenmanufaktur Böllinger Höfe zwischen Neckargartach und Biberach bei Audi Sport. Das Fahrzeug basiert ebenso wie der Porsche Taycan auf der Plattform J1, etwa 40 % der Teile sind gleich.

The vehicle is produced together with the Audi R8 4S in the Böllinger Höfe sports car factory between Neckargartach and Biberach at Audi Sport. Like the Porsche Taycan, the vehicle is based on the J1 platform; around 40% of the parts are the same.
