The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica), also known as the common puffin, is a species of seabird in the auk family. It is the only puffin native to the Atlantic Ocean. Wikipedia

Fratercula arctica

Having just returned from a wonderful trip to New England I am pretty excited to go through some of the photos to see how I did. Atlantic Puffins are always a major highlight of this trip so it was the species that I wanted to start out with. We lucked out on weather and got to go out twice to photograph them with calm seas. Photographing these little cuties never gets old. The fog on our first trip out made things a little challenging but we all still managed plenty of nice photos.

The Puffin looked remarkably comfortable and relaxed as it squatted on a lichen covered rocky outcrop.

The Atlantic puffin spends most of the year far from land in the open ocean and only visits coastal areas to breed. It is a sociable bird and it usually breeds in large colonies.

Spring Sunset on Galway Bay from Rinville Park on the Wild Atlantic Way

Only extended the shutter speed to 1/2 second here to get some wave action with the swells hitting against the rocks. The clouds over the ocean were very pretty there in the morning.

Atlantic Puffins taken in Elliston, Newfoundland. It was such a pleasure to watch these wonderful birds. They were high on my wish list in Newfoundland and I wasn't disappointed.

Many thanks for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

Not sure that a feather in the beak marks the sign of a good provider! A well arranged line of Sand Eels would have done the job nicely though.

Obviously this proud looking individual hadn't read the Puffin Parenting Guide ... bless!

Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica), Grimsey, north of Iceland, July 15, 2019.

Grimsey didn't have as many pretty flowers as northern Iceland, but Grimsey more than made up for it with a higher density of puffins. On almost any cliff-side, you could spot hundreds if not thousands of them during the nesting season (July and August).

Atlantic puffin in a snow burst. Hornøya Island, Norway. Hornøya is up north 70° but not so cold at the end of March and a large number of seabirds are coming in early spring for breeding.

A visit to the East coast of Yorkshire and the Buckton and Bempton area. Weather was cold, showery and at times overcast. Not what we expected for mid May.

The 2nd day out had slightly better conditions. These images are from the south end of RSPB Bempton and Northwick Cliffs.

An image capturing the moment a Puffin emerged from its nesting burrow and enjoyed having room to stretch its wings! Must be so exhilarating after time cooped up underground.
