From Görans bok, by Elsa Beskow (1874-1953), a well-known author and illustrator of Swedish children's books.
Asp tree that sheds its golden leaves, or as it and the creatures of the woods believe, golden coins, and they hurry to collect them!
ASPEN
En liten asp i skogen står,
han skakar på sitt vackra hår,
så gyllne slantarna falla;
och granen mörk och allvarsam
och tallen med sin höga stam,
de höra honom tralla:
Vem vill ha, vem vill ha,
kom och ta, kom och ta,
kom och ta mina gyllene slantar!
Då blir ett liv på alla håll,
från alla tuvor myllra troll,
de komma från hundrade kanter.
De stora påsar med sig ha
och riva, rafsa, knuffas, dra,
båd gubbar, ungar och tanter.
Vi vill ha, vi vill ha,
vi ska ta, vi ska ta
vi ska ta dina gyllene slantar.
Och ekorrn skrattar i sin topp,
och haren tar ett lustigt hopp;
Nej har man sett på maken!
Men aspen står så hjärtans nöjd
och skakar sin blad med fröjd,
fast han blir arm och naken.
De ä' bra, de ä' bra,
kom och ta, kom och ta,
kom och ta mina gyllene slantar!
(English translation coming soon, hopefully!)
