A tapestry of starlight and shadow — SNR G013.3–01.3 drifts through the rich fields of Sagittarius. Framed by the glow of M24, the cluster NGC 6603, and sweeping dark nebulae, this remnant of a stellar explosion lies among a crossroads of star birth and death, where cosmic dust, glowing gas, and ancient shockwaves intertwine.
Captured from my Bortle 6 backyard, this was challenging to capture and process but quite rewarding to see it come together in the end.
Thanks for checking.

Sh2-86, NGC 6820 and 6823
One of the guys from our astronomy club, the The Chagrin Valley Astronomical Society, sent me this target as a suggestion. I took one look and moved it up on my short list. Does not seem to be imaged very often.
NGC 6820 is a small reflection nebula near the open cluster NGC 6823 in Vulpecula . The reflection nebula and cluster are embedded in a large faint emission nebula called SH2-86. M27, the Dumbbell Nebula, is found three degrees to the east.
I may have to revisit this object in the future.

The IC 59 nebula is a faint emission and reflection nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, located near the bright star Gamma Cassiopeia (~550 light-years away). It exhibits a combination of red (ionized hydrogen gas emission) and blue (reflected starlight from dust) glows. IC 59 is slightly farther from Gamma Cassiopeia than its companion nebula, IC 63, resulting in weaker hydrogen emission and more reflection. It highlights how ultraviolet radiation from massive stars shapes nearby gas and dust clouds.

Welcome to the constellation Vela, where the cosmos tells a story of creation and destruction. At the center of this image lies RCW 38, a stellar nursery where young stars are born amidst glowing gas and dust, lighting up their surroundings.
In the bottom-right, the striking Pencil Nebula (NGC 2736) is a glowing filament of the Vela Supernova Remnant, a structure formed by a massive stellar explosion thousands of years ago. Next to it, the blue filaments - highlighted using an OIII filter - trace ionized oxygen gas, part of the same remnant. Nearby stars like c Vel, f Vel, and g Vel shine brightly within this tapestry of light.
In contrast, the serene NGC 2670 star cluster in the top-left adds a sense of calm to this dynamic scene.
This image was processed in the HOO palette, combining hydrogen and oxygen emissions to create the vibrant reds and blues. It represents over 14h of imaging time and careful post-processing to bring out these intricate details.

*** 6h Journey to Rho Ophiuchi ***
Rho Ophiuchi is one of the most colorful regions in the night sky, located near the constellation Ophiuchus. This celestial wonder showcases a stunning array of dark clouds, bright reflection nebulae, and vivid emission nebulae. Additionally, this image prominently features the bright star Antares, the globular clusters M4 and NGC 6144, and the star Alniyat, adding to the rich tapestry of this celestial scene.
What’s in the Image?
Dark Clouds:
The dark patches are molecular clouds, dense regions of gas and dust where new stars are born. They block the light from the stars behind them, creating a beautiful contrast against the brighter regions.
Bright Reflection Nebulae:
The blue areas are reflection nebulae. They glow because the light from nearby stars reflects off the dust particles in the cloud. These stars aren’t hot enough to ionize the gas, but their light scatters, creating a beautiful blue hue.
Emission Nebulae:
The reddish areas are emission nebulae. The gas here is energized by nearby hot stars, causing it to glow. This glow comes from hydrogen gas, the most common element in these regions.
Notable Stars and Clusters:
• Antares: This bright star is prominently depicted in the image. It is one of the brightest stars in the night sky and part of the Scorpius constellation.
• Alniyat: Another bright star that adds to the visual spectacle.
• Globular Clusters M4 and NGC 6144: These clusters appear as dense collections of stars, adding to the intricate details of the region.

Join me on a cosmic journey to the hauntingly beautiful Witch Head Nebula, floating 1,000 light-years away in the constellation Eridanus.
This spectral cloud, shaped like a witch’s profile, stretches across space illuminated by nearby stars, including the bright Cursa (β Eri). If you look closely, you can also spot Kursi al Jauzah II (ψ Eri) further down.
In the background, several faint galaxies—millions of light-years away—are visible, including NGC 1720, NGC 1726, NGC 1752, NGC 1779, and others, hiding among the nebula’s tendrils. What you’re seeing is the combined glow of starlight reflected in the dust, enhanced by H-alpha data that brings out the rich, deep-red hydrogen gas lingering in the area—an essential element for star formation.
This nebula reveals how the interplay of light and gas creates such a mesmerizing cosmic scene.

In today's episode of "what does this button do", I present the outcome of my messing around - a Cyanotype version of my Rosette nebula 😆😁
The Rosette Nebula! It is unique for its vast cluster of young stars, unlike many nebulae which don't have such dense star formations. In size it’s almost double the size of the Eagle Nebula - 130 light years in diameter. To have an idea, you can fit 6.8 million of our suns inside .
"Oceanic Cosmos": The Dolphin Head Nebula in Aquatic Hues.
My latest acquisition, not sure how I feel about this yet, I may choose to add more data later.
All my socials here: linktr.ee/deepskyjourney
ABOUT THE ACQUISITION
Despite being observed from a Bortle 6 location in my Brisbane backyard, the nebula's charm is vividly captured. The observation challenges however were significant due to the month's full moon and suboptimal FWHM readings between 2.76" and 3.46" due to high clouds. Because of this, I was not able to highlight the presence of a round bubble at the bottom edge of the nebula (planetary nebula candidate PNG 234.9-09.7). You can *just* slightly see its presence if you know what you're looking for.
Nonetheless, some of the nebula's details were seized at a modest focal length of 250mm using a RedCat 51 telescope. The image is further embellished by the bright presence of the red-orange supergiant O¹ Canis Majoris and the stellar ensemble of the open cluster Collinder 121, adding depth to the celestial scene captured from this urban setting.
ABOUT THE WIDEVIEW
This astrophotography endeavor captures a broader celestial landscape beyond the Dolphin Nebula, spanning from -22º to -26º in declination and extending from 6h50min to 7h in right ascension. Centered at RA 06h54m14s.93 and DEC -23°51′59″.9, the image offers a wide field of view of approximately 3.007 degrees, with a pixel scale of 3.879 arcsec/pixel and oriented at -89.219 degrees. This wideview includes not only SH2-308 but also other significant astronomical features such as SH2-303 and the planetary nebulae candidates PK233-10.1 and PK236-10.1. The detailed capture of this expansive celestial region, despite the challenges posed by less-than-ideal observing conditions, showcases a rich tapestry of stellar and nebular phenomena, adding a broader context to the captivating scene centered on the Dolphin Nebula.
ABOUT THE NEBULA
The Dolphin Nebula, also known as SH2-308, is a captivating emission nebula formed by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the Wolf-Rayet star WR6, also known as EZ Canis Majoris. This star, a luminous beacon with over 600,000 times the sun's brightness yet only 26 times its mass, plays a pivotal role in the nebula's striking appearance. Predominantly illuminated by OIII emissions, the nebula's intricate structures, reminiscent of a dolphin's brain, are also accentuated in Ha emissions.

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is a nearby galaxy, approximately 160,000 light-years from the Milky Way. Within the LMC lies NGC 2070, known as the Tarantula Nebula, one of the most vibrant star-forming regions in our local group. This combination showcases the stunning tapestry of cosmic evolution.
The Carina Nebula, is a large, complex area of bright and dark nebulosity in the constellation Carina, located in the Carina–Sagittarius Arm of the Milky Way galaxy. Within it is the Eta Carinae - a highly luminous hypergiant star.
Fun fact, there’s a “small” nebula within this nebula known as the Homunculus Nebula (from Latin meaning Little Man). It is believed to have been ejected in an enormous outburst in 1841 which briefly made Eta Carinae the second-brightest star in the sky.

The Dolphin Head Nebula found in the Sharpless Catalogue Sh2-308 is a supernova remnant and is the structure left over from the luminous explosions of massive stars that turn supernova. Supernovae are the final evolutionary stage of massive stars. The process of runaway nuclear fusion results in an explosion so bright that, for a brief time, a single supernova can outshine an entire galaxy. After this initial burst it will slowly fade, scarring interstellar space with an expanding bubble of matter known as a supernova remnant. When this fast moving material collides with the interstellar medium it produces spectacular filaments that glow at high temperature.(Info supplied courteously by Fifth Star Labs and Sky Guide Plus)This image has been compiled in narrow band Ha and OIII as an HOO composition.
Behold the majestic Seagull Nebula, soaring in the cosmic ocean of the night sky.
Fun fact: this nebula is actually a combination of three nebulae - resembling the head, wings, and body of a seagull - each with distinct structures and formations, creating a stunning celestial mosaic in the sky.

A pair of interacting Galaxies (NGC 4435 and NGC 4438) known as Markarian's Eyes. Other dimmer galaxies float alongside. You'll be able to pick up brighter parts of the chain with a pair of 100mm binoculars in dark skies, but a telescope is the better way to look at these. This is a RGB image captured over few nights in bad conditions and seeing. I have annotated the image as well but only shows about half of the galaxies and interesting items in the picture. Markarian's Chain is the stretch of galaxies that forms part of the Virgo Cluster. When viewed from Earth, the galaxies lie along a smoothly curved line.
