Wooden Man in the Oil Slick

MMH

Constructed sometime between 1830 and 1833 (online dates vary) the Mountain Barracks quartered a detachment of Royal Marines likely working on the Mountain Farm and manning the lookout-post at Weather Post peak. Located high on the mountain it would have offered a cooler climate than at sea level, but the mountain was not originally lush and tree covered as it is today. The introduction of vegetation and bamboo was in an attempt to force clouds to form and condense, providing a source of fresh water for the garrison.

It was in use for around 35 years until the average ceiling for the clouds was so low that the barracks was often enveloped, making it too dark and damp for habitation. Famously it was subsequently used as a cattle shed. The mountain barrack accommodation was moved lower down the slopes to the Red Lion.

Manchester is described as a vibrant modern city and the centre of commerce for the North West of England, famous for its football club and infamous for exceptionally rainy weather. My images are 'time pieces' that evoke a strong sense of place, time and mood. They are stolen moments caught on the run that would otherwise be forever lost in time....

A closer view of the unique white chirch.

The secret of the white coating was never found. It is considered that it was very expensive and originally contained even fresh eggs to keep the coating stay on for a long time...

It actually did... until the late 70-ties, when the authorities decided to renew the whiting.

As a result, the chirch is in a state of permanent refining of the coating layer as no up-to-date materials can line up with the ancient secret recipes that made the coating last for hundreds of years...

Ascension from Germany

The Ascension church (1792-1818) in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg was one of the few prominent orthodox churches that wasn't destroyed by the communists in the 30s, but stands in desrepair and sharp contrast to the Church on the Blood on the other side of the road.
