Abazia di Farfa (particolare dell'ingresso)

------------------------------------------------------

Farfa Abbey (detail of the entrance).

This is an impressive wood sculpture like a giant snake, abstract art I think, which is exposed at the museum of modern art in Strasbourg

The roof of a so-called wintergarden in the little village of Sint Kathelijne Waver in Belgium; part of a large convent.

The famous for the "wintertuin" ("winter garden") of the Ursulines Institute. It is almost never open to public visits, except on occasional open houses and group visits. The wintertuin is just one room in the Ursuline complex, initiated in 1841 and gradually expanding to fulfill its function as a boarding school and teacher training school. The identity of the architect of the wintertuin in 1900 has been lost in the passage of time, but its magnificent stained glass dome together with the interior decoration remains as a testament to the dazzling beauty of Art Nouveau architecture. All of the fixtures and furnishings of the wintergarden are original and have remained in superb condition. The other rooms of the Institute were created in different styles as was normal in interiors of the well-educated.

ABOUT THIS PIECE

Earth 2011.

Alebrijes are whimsical carvings depicting animals, people, objects, and imaginary creatures painted with intense colors and intricate patterns. Although these distinctive cultural artifacts are often assumed to represent a long established, tradition of Mexican folk art, they only began to appear in the 1940s.

There is gendered division of labor in the production of alebrijes. Males, both men and boys, gather and carve wood, since wood gathering and carving is a long established tradition in rural Oaxaca. The sanding of the alebrijes is a monotonous job that is usually relegated to children or unskilled labor. Women typically paint the alebrijes, with the most talented painters creating the most intricate and complex patterns (Chibnik, 94-111). One way of telling which is a superior alebrije is by looking at how the eyes are painted.
