These little Derringer type guns are becoming increasingly more popular here in the US, especially among women as a means of personal protection.

This small cafe in Market Square, Newark was closed down on health and hygiene infringements. The local council has filled the windows of some closed shops with maps of the town, information or in this case the coat of arms of Newark.

This rendition of the coat of arms is done very amateurishly and bears only a passing resemblance of the professionally done ones. But then this was free after all and done quickly even if it is rather cartoonish!

For some reason, when I looked at this picture, it made me think of the Creed song, Arms Wide Open! I guess because of the leaves stretched out in all directions!

I apologize for my lack of new MOC posts. I have retired these for want of pieces and am expecting a few Bricklink orders soon.

Hopefully I will get to building during my spring break.

Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana is preparing for the arrival of Ariane 6, ESA’s new heavy-lift rocket. This involves the final preparations of the new Ariane 6 launch complex and all the systems necessary for a launch.

With the mobile gantry fully retracted – as for a launch, two articulated cryogenic arms attached to the upper part of the Ariane 6 mast on the launch pad, mimicked the moment of liftoff.

These tests repeated earlier tests performed in Fos-sur-Mer, France.

The ‘cryo-arms’ are part of the fluidic connection system which connects to Ariane 6 in the final countdown to launch. They support the upper umbilicals which supply cryogenic top-up fuel, maintain the correct pressurisation of the tanks, cool the engines before ignition and generally keep the upper stage in an optimal condition right up to the point of liftoff. The same umbilicals allow the fuel to be drained safely if a launch is aborted.

Each arm is 13 m long and weighs 20 tonnes. One arm supplies liquid hydrogen at -250°C, the other supplies liquid oxygen at -180°C. When Ariane 6 lifts off, these arms will disconnect from the rocket and then pivot away quickly in just 2.6 seconds to avoid interfering with the rocket's ascent.

This manoeuvre requires great precision in order, almost simultaneously, to disconnect the arms, protect the supply hoses from gas ejections from the boosters and allow the launch vehicle to pass while avoiding any contact with it.

A 50-tonne counterweight inside the mast – as heavy as a humpback whale – speeds up the retraction of the arms. A smart damping system allows the arms to brake before the end of their swing backwards in order to preserve the mechanical links with the mast.

Keeping the fluidic supplies connected with the rocket until the moment of liftoff guarantees the best availability and simplification of the interface with the launch vehicle.

The disconnection of the cryo-arms from Ariane 6 is much faster than it is from Ariane 5 which is six seconds before liftoff. This means the sequence for Ariane 6 can be triggered at the latest possible moment in the countdown reducing the chance of unnecessary disconnects on an aborted launch.

'Into My Arms' - apart from the work itself, there a few charms to being up the side of a mountain in heavy rain very early in the morning. This morning though, I was treated to the joy of nature and was able to spend a few short minutes with a deer. It's with a deal of ease we dismiss the known beauty of our environment and this series simply highlights that lost relationship between our natural selves and our natural surroundings.

Belly chains with the handcuffs attached at the side are perfect for low or medium risk inmates. These chains still allow some movement, e. g. for signing court papers or pointing at pieces of evidence during testimony, though restricting arm motion to prevent the prisoner from butting or hitting. When using such a belly chain to restrain high-risk inmates, the detainee can also be shackled with his arms crossed so that the left wrist is placed in the cuff on the right side of his waist and vice versa.

37425 passes Stracey Arms with 2P21 1317 Yarmouth to Norwich on 3rd July 2015.

Rainer remembers: I've been detained or arrested some times. Nothing really serious, just what happens when you are young and party hard in this country. In most cases, I found myself in handcuffs and had my hands behind the back while the officer wrote me a citation.

This time, he insisted on booking me into jail. After booking, I was told that I was quite lucky because they would take me to court in a few moments and the judge will probaly let me go. But they also told me that there was a downside. Some high level inmates would go with me on the transport, and they treat all inmates according to the highest security level of those transported together. I had to take off all my clothes and they performed a full body search. it was so degrading! But it got even worse. They issued me a red and white striped jumpsuit and slippers which I was told to get in. Nothing else: no underwear, no socks, just that rough wearing jumpsuit. Then I heared the clinking of chains as another officer entered the booking area. I was so stunned as I spotted him hoding a set of chains in his right hand that my eyes were popping out of my head. The officer seemed to notice that because he asked my if that was actually my first time in jail. As i affirmed he told me: "Well mate, it's not comfortable, but restraints are not meant to be comfortabe. I'v been in them some times during training. It really sucks. But you have no choice. Take it like a man. And now, turn around and put your hands behind your head." I swallowed hard and did what I was told. I was frightened as I felt the cold steel of the chain being wrapped around my waist. I heared a padlock snap and then I knew I would not get out of these chains soon. Then the officer told me to put my right arm down. I yelled "yes, sir" and put it down so that he could put it into the cuff. As I was told to do the same with the left arm, I realized that he as about to restrain me with my arms crossed. I feebly asked him: "Sir, with all due respect, but isn't that a bit exaggerated? I won't make any troubles, I promise." He answered: "Look mate, normally I would cuff your hands at the side. But you are going on a high security transport, and therefore I have to restrain you with your arms crossed. It's the rules." I answered: "The rules suck." he replied with some hint of mercy in his vioce: "Well, sometimes they do. I must ask you to kneel on the bench. I have to apply leg irons too." I felt my throat tie up, but did as I was told. As I didn't wear socks, he put the leg irons on my bare ankles. They were so cold and uncomfortable! The officer grabbed my right arm. "Stand up, mate. Be careful when walking with these on. Wait, it's your first time, I'll help you." He kept my right arm while escorting me to the transport van waiting for us inmates.

As I entered the van, some other dudes were still in. They didn't look very sympathic, so I even was a bit happy that we all were in the same restraints so they would't be able to do me any harm. As I sat down in the van, the guards locked the door and we started our journey to court.

As we arrived, I was the first to be led in front of the judge. He suggested dropping all charges in exchange of 100 hours of community service. I accepted without thinking because the restraints were so uncomfortable I would have given everything to get them off as soon as possible. Therefore, the hearing took only a few minutes and the officer who escorted me to court gave me an individual ride back to jail, just for me! When we reached the booking area, he took the restraints off. As he noticed my feeling of relief, he said: "Well mate, that may teach you a lesson." Actually, it did. I became much more cautious and didn't party that hard any more.

On a day trip to Lake Clearwater to take some snow shots. We left before dawn so we could catch the morning sun on the mountains. Canterbury High Country June 27, 2015 New Zealand. It was -7c here!

Lake Clearwater is a place of relative peace and solitude. Motor powered craft are not permitted on the lake however rowboats, kayaks, and windsurfers can be used. The strong and consistent winds funnelling off the mountains are a slice of heaven for windsurfers.

A small village of around 100 holiday homes (or baches as they are called in New Zealand) are located on the ground that seperates Lake Clearwater from Lake Camp, a two minute walk away. Overnight camping is permitted at a basic reserve area situated on the South end of Lake Clearwater, providing toilet facilities and water (required to be boiled for drinking).

The Boston Arms, Tufnell Park, London, 1 May 2023. Quite spectacular Victorian 'gin palace'. Built 1899, architects Thorpe & Furniss.

I previously visited this location a while back, the conditions at the time weren't really suitable. I did however pick out this compositions as something to revisit when they were. I particularly liked the barren landscape and distant views of Sharp and Hare Tors with the terrain enhanced by the patches of light. Thanks for looking :-)
