Bottle top approximately 1.25 inches across. This is the top of a Victorian 'marble' or 'Codd bottle' (after the inventor. Ingenious things for carbonated drinks. A rubber grommet, a cleverly shaped glass neck so the marble is pressed up against the rubber washer by the gas pressure. When the bottle is tilted and turned, the marble is trapped in a kink in the neck, allowing the liquid out.

I have photographed one of these before, but I didn't own one or any other marbles. On Saturday fate smiled. Every year they drain the park boating lake, then let it fill again on the next very high tide. This year, the silt must have moved sufficiently to expose this bottle. This one has a rather pitted outer surface from so long being swilled around in sandy silt, but is otherwise in good condition with its rubber seal still amazingly intact.

For this shot I suspended the bottle up side down and fired flash through the base. I used various gels and angles, making some great effects and I struggled to decide which one to use. This is one of the less radical ones.

Hội An, formerly known as Fai-Fo or Faifoo, is a city with a population of approximately 120,000 in Vietnam's Quảng Nam Province and noted since 1999 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Old Town Hội An, the city's historic district, is recognized as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port dating from the 15th to the 19th century, its buildings and street plan reflecting a unique blend of influences, indigenous and foreign. Prominent in the city's old town, is its covered "Japanese Bridge," dating to the 16th-17th century.

There are approximately 1,950 breeding pairs of avocets in the UK, and around 8,700 wintering birds.Avocets are black and white wading birds with pale blue-gray legs and an upcurved beak. They are most commonly found in coastal areas with mudflats and lagoons, where they feed in saltwater or brackish water and nest nearby. However, avocets are adaptable and have been known to breed in inland areas like here at Arundel WWT

Was able to capture one in flight. Known as an Australian Sugarbag Bee and is approximately 3.9-4.3 mm in length.

At approximately 0749 on September 15, 2020, UP Train MCXNP 14 ran a stop indication and derailed on a crossover switch at State Line Jct. on the KCT High Line while crossing over from 75 to 74 Track. The switches were out of correspondence, being thrown while the stop signal violation took place. At over 20 MPH, both engines and the head 5 cars derailed, listing but upright.

The derailment thankfully stayed on the ballasted deck bridge without falling to the ground below, but presented a unique challenge with where the equipment came to rest, necessitating the use of several contractors to remove the locomotives and railcars.

Wilkerson Crane Rental, Inc., and Cranemasters did most of the lifting, while Mainline Services LLC., under the direction of BNSF engineering forces, as they have the MOW contract on the KCT; replaced the track. Watco/KCTL dropped new ballast with a BNSF rock train to replace what was removed from the bridge deck during cleanup.

A myriad of other contractors also assisted in moving the needed materials and equipment into the site. The line returned to service at 0450 on the 17th without the crossover, which will be restored at a later date. It was nothing short of a fascinating procedure to watch as the equipment was recovered.

I've seen a horsefly. I've seen a housefly, but I ain't never seen an AC4400CW fly until tonight. It's not far off the bridge, but suspended between the Cranemasters and Wilkerson booms, the engine is suspended over 30 feet above the ground in this photo.

Approximately 55% of roads in Vermont are dirt/unpaved. Its one of the things that makes Vermont so charming, and makes it such a great place for walking your dog (people tend to drive a lot slower and there's a lot less traffic on a dirt road)

Approximately four-month-old Sprocket, left, and Shutter on their first night home, still in a state of unease from being uprooted from their previous environment.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. on October 19, 2022, southbound CP G16 hit a washout and derailed in Orneville Twp, ME, just south of Milo. They stacked up three GP20C-ECO's (2262, 2279, 2257) and approximately 6 cars. This scene is about 30 hours later, and a pair of sidewinders on site have moved the railcars and engines to the side of the track. No less than four excavators are repairing the roadbed with a parade of dump trucks delivering material. Prefab track pieces are staged on each side for quick install. I would not be surprised if the track is open by the end of the day today.

Approximately 8% to 10% of the world's population has blue eyes. This makes blue eyes the second most common eye colour globally.

Blue eyes evolved due to a genetic mutation that reduced melanin production in the iris, causing a blue appearance due to light scattering. This mutation likely occurred in a single individual in Europe or the Near East, and blue eyes became more prevalent due to a combination of factors, including sexual selection (where blue eyes were perceived as attractive) and reduced need for high melanin levels in colder climates with less intense sunlight.

Bright eyes don't have an optical advantage, the iris always blocks light, no matter the colour. Maybe after the first bright eyes appeared, there was some sexual selection because they were outstanding, or it made communication easier because the pupil increase due to arousal is much easier to see in bright eyes.

Even though the colour of your eyes should not affect how clearly you see, it may affect your eyes' sensitivity to the sun and high glare.

The national nature reserve of Orti is located in the central Ardennes, in the valley of the Laval stream, near its confluence with the western Ourthe, south of the village of Lavacherie, in the municipal territory of Sainte-Ode. Most of its approximately 6.5 hectares is occupied by a mosaic of megaphorbiaia and acidophilous wet meadows with meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), sharp-tepaled rush (Juncus acutiflorus), comaret (Comarum palustre), meadow succise ( Succisa pratensis), bistort (Persicaria bistorta), valerian (Valeriana officinalis), common loosestrife (Lysimachia vulgaris) and many other plants. Shrub beds have gradually settled in following the abandonment of the site as a mowing meadow. It is often swamp sassai with auricle willow (Salix aurita) where the soil is most waterlogged. In other places, a young deciduous forest evolves freely, notably in the aspect of an alder-ash forest along the watercourse. A mesotrophic pond completes the range of habitats present in this beautiful wetland. This valley bottom is frequented by a particularly remarkable fauna, quite comparable to what can be observed in the other still well-preserved sites in the region. Another protected area, the ZHIB d'Orti, extends over almost 4 ha just to the east, on the opposite bank of the Laval stream. This state reserve is almost entirely included in the Natura 2000 network in the BE34031 site "Middle basin of the western Ourthe". It is also entirely encompassed within the limits of the Deux Ourthes Natural Park.

The Hohe Bogen is an approximately 8 km long mountain range in the Bavarian Forest. Apart from the lower southwestern slopes, the Hohe Bogen occupies a special geological position in the Bavarian Forest. It forms the southern end of a gabbroamphibolite massif in the immediate vicinity of the Bohemian Massif. The low seepage capacity of the subsoil gives rise to hundreds of small springs and stream channels on the flanks of the High Arc. The forestation consists mostly of spruce forests, but especially in the state forest there are also extensive beech forests and mixed beech forests. The liverwort and the spring chickweed have their only occurrence here in the "Hinterer Bayerischer Wald".

Two little-used trails on the eastern side are the Auerhahnsteig and the Jägersteig, on which we are traveling here.
