Jeune taureau parthenais assez agité parmi les génisses... sans doute pour la première fois. J'espère que l'on aura l'occasion de se recroiser. J'ai connu son père Naby... Nous avons échangé quelques regards entre appréhension, pudeur et curiosité.
I saw this young bull among a big group of cows an afternoon of spring.
I knew his dad named Naby. A big and great bull.
He looked at me between fear and curiosity, tenderness and power. I let them.

Met this gorgeous wee boy next to Maidens Beach, yesterday. I just thought he was gorgeous!
Here, he was looking with wonder, apprehension and excitement at a big dog who was happily ignoring him.
What a wee darling!

Another from my testing of my new toy, the Tamron 150-600mm A022 G2 Lens. And it's a monster of a lens, the sharpness that just about won out against the Sigma of the same range and it's broad range makes this Lens particularly versatile. There is a family of Squirrels came regularly come to town and we leave nuts and other seeds out for them, much to this little fella's protesting I caught him the act, well, he or she, retreated back to the nearest tree, chirping and squeaking at me, how dare I!
Well, I hope everyone is well and so as always, thank you! :)

West of Time: Fangorn Forest *
“Fantasy adventures rarely have an end. There is always someone to understand their foundations and continue the story” (A wise man)
__________
I have returned to the West of Time, where it all began, at the edge of Fangorn Forest.
Dark trees bearing magnificent white flowers stretched out their long branches, as if to mark, with a welcoming gesture, the passage to the depths of the forest. They might have been distant ancestors of our apple trees, but according to local history they belonged to the Ent civilization, the oldest in Middle-earth. These trees were believed to be endowed with a form of “consciousness” and a collective memory going back to the origins. They were said to be able to communicate with each other and with other species and even to act together in the common interest...
Suddenly, I was overwhelmed by a tide of persistent impressions: curiosity, extreme vigilance, the distant echo of shadowy areas, gaping wounds in the heart of the trees. Then, a steady rustle of leaves froze me in place with apprehension. And, in a way that I cannot explain, I understood the meaning: “Be careful while crossing the forest. Show us respect. And we will help you find the courage to face the mysteries and dangers you will face in the World. (Patrice the Hobbit)
____________
In the East of Time, modern Rationalism has relegated stories, tales, ancient legends including the writings of Tolkien and many other great authors, to the domains of the imagination, spirituality, pure magic, folklore and entertainment. As is, none of these writings had any resonance with useful knowledge drawn from human experience...
However, recent discoveries in neurobiology, plant biology and ecology applied to trees and forests tend to give a scientific basis to several old myths about them: trees are social and conscious entities, capable of learning, interacting and advancing. **
What the elders knew, but could not express in words, rather in metaphorical and poetic imagery, like Tolkien - now becomes a field of modern scientific research, peripheral indeed, but courageous and promising.

Happy Bench Monday!!!
HBM!!
I saw this old guy while driving around La Grange, Texas. It's the very first jail house build in the town. Now it's being used as the City of La Grange Visitor’s Bureau and office space for the La Grange Area Chamber of Commerce. In the mid-1930’s, two members of the infamous Bonne and Clyde gang, Raymond Hamilton and Gene O’ Dare were held here for robbing the Carmine Bank.
Here's more info:
Fayette County opened its first jail in July, 1838. The cost of the first structure was $460. It was a primitive structure; prisoners were ironed and chained but within 10 years the building was sold. With no jail, prisoners were parceled out to various citizens for safekeeping. The plan worked until a murderer’s apprehension made arrangements for his incarceration in another town necessary.
In 1852, plans were finalized for a new jail that was in use by 1854. This jail was built by German immigrant Heinrich Kreishe, who was a stone mason by trade when he immigrated. You can see his work still at the Monument Hill/ Kreishe Brewery State Park.
By the early 1880’s, the need for a more modern and larger jail was evident and work began on the structure we now call the Old Jail. In November 1881, the county commissioners selected the Victorian Gothic design of Andrewarthe & Wahrenberger as the new look. The building was opened in 1883.
Maybe a wee bit of apprehension? ... What's up "Fluffy" ...

For when you're looking...
You never asked me what else lingered. And in my haste to stand on solid ground, I never quite told you. I never quite gave you the recount of what else I carry with me.
Like the unshakable feeling of walking on thin ice – the creaking, the cracking, the visible fractures expanding with every footfall. The fear of the ice giving in, the fear of the frozen dark waters underneath consuming me whole, inhabited by someone else’s monsters of the deep. The apprehension, like a living, breathing creature, sucking the air out and exhaling black, oppressive smoke that made it impossible to see or even breathe.
There’s an omnipresence to it– it echoes in the deepest recesses of my consciousness. Well and truly embedded, that I am robbed of any certainty as to my recoil – is it the memory, or the actual sound? Is it a treacherous footstep, or the imagination of one? Has my foot truly gone through – is it touching those dark waters – or is it just that odd precipice like a night start or a lucid dream?
And there it was, a sense of dread you instilled. A clamping, silencing proverbial hand, because so much as a breath threatened to break the ice…
Yet it broke anyway. Not fractured by my weight, nor by a whisper of an exhale. It was the things that lurked beneath, rearing their heads. I’d glimpsed them, ghost-like, through the thinnest ice. I’d heard their wails. I knew they existed as surely as I knew I existed. And now I saw them, free at long last.
They’d been ravenous, and now they demand to be fed.
Do you truly begrudge me the aversion to being cannibalized by your monsters?
Long exposure photography can create dynamic, and sometimes, surreal images full of motion. Whether there is a sense of tranquility, apprehension with regard to the unexpected, or an element of surprise, night images can also evoke a true sense of emotion.
Photographers who specialize in night photography are indeed a special breed. This should not be so surprising when one realizes how much in-depth understanding of light is necessary to capture that perfect photograph. Additionally, there are some rather basic tips any newbie night photographer should know. This, and more, will be covered in this edition of “After Hours Photography,” with a few night photography exercises tossed in to allow you to practice that which is covered. After all, practice - and I do mean a lot of it - will enable you to create magical night imagery!
First thing first, and that is - Know Your Camera! Whether shooting landscapes, or urban settings, trundle through the darkness not only looking for the perfect scene, but experimenting along the way. A thorough understanding of your camera, and what all of the buttons do, is essential for night photography. The last thing you will want, with little light with which to work, is to fumble with your camera and its controls. Not knowing can only make for stressful, difficult photography.
** Take a moment, and have a look at your camera controls. Pay close attention to the Mode Dial. This is where you will set how you will photograph.

Genbaku Dome, part of the greater Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, as an enduring symbol of peace.
Two countries disagreed with the decision, China and the United States, both expressing apprehension that the Japanese would use this as a symbol of martyrdom without context for their role in the events that led up to the use of the Atomic Bomb.
The building stands, in effect, as it did after the explosion on 6 August 1945. The only structure near the hypocenter to have withstood the blast that killed 70,000 people instantly and approximately 70,000 more from radiation exposure over the ensuing year.
Despite losing over 1/3 of its population in 1945/46, Hiroshima was rebuilt and revitalized as a city of peace, and is now a thriving cultural and industrial city (Mazda Motor Corporation is headquartered here) home to over two million people.

Wonderful conditions on Friday morning at Derwentwater.
Bit of a story as to how I ended up here which essentially involved me standing under the Ribblehead Viaduct in the pitch black at 10pm feeling tiny and vulnerable under the clearest star strewn sky I've ever seen. My mind a mix of wonder at the beauty of the night sky and apprehension at being about a mile from the van with no phone signal, all alone except for axe wielding maniacs for company. I took a few test shots before deciding there was no way I was going to walk back at 2am to have a go at shooting the Milky Way.
The plan was for a couple of days away in Pembrokeshire. This would be my one 'big trip,' for the month. I'd spent the previous week avidly reading the Fotovue book and I was happy with my itinerary. Weather looked great with the forecast even better. The road through Castlemartin firing range to Green Bridge, Elegug Stacks and St Govan's was open, with clear skies one night and near perfect sunset and sunrise conditions for the second day....
I've spoken about this before. I love visiting these amazing locations we are so lucky to have in the UK but it's always much more enjoyable to have someone to share them with. So with that in mind and the van packed I set off....
Only the van decided to turn left and not right when I reached the M6. I pulled in at Charnock Richards services, made a cuppa and hastily drew up a new itinerary. Within a couple of hours I found myself stood at the lone tree in Malham for sunset. Another hour and I'd bought my curry from The Royal Spice in Settle and was making my way up to Ribblehead feeling smug I'd chosen a curry house that had signed pictures of some major A-Listers who had eaten there, most notably Michael Caine. As I drove up the B6479 I was trying to think of a joke involving Michael Caine and hot curries. You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off naturally came to mind but I couldn't formulate it in to a worthwhile anecdote; The curry was delicious, Chicken Handi. A little on the small side but bursting with flavour.
The new plan was Malham for sunset, curry in Settle, a quick scout at Ribblehead before 3-4 hrs sleep and some astro, then on to Keswick for sunrise where the forecast was screaming mist. I'd been wanting to shoot Otterbield Bay on Derwentwater for some time having scratched the similar itch of High Brandlehow Bay on my last visit to The Lakes three months previously. I'd rang Helen and the change of plan meant she could drive up Friday morning, arriving around midday to join me whilst I caught up on some sleep.
Standing there under the stars and marveling at the awe inspiring structure of the viaduct, the Victorians definitely built things to last, I did feel a little disappointed in myself at making the inevitable decision to bail on the astro idea. I just didn't feel comfortable. And with the decision made it was off to Keswick.
Alarm set for 5am I made my way down to Otterbield to be presented with the most wonderful conditions. Derwentwater was like a mill pond, there was intermittent low hanging cloud and mist, swirling around in what little wind there was and the only noise was from the birds and their early dawn chorus. As the sun began to get higher and reflect off the mist I could see the deep rich ochres and oranges that accompany sunrise on the fells and the snow topped distinctive shapes of Blencathra and Skiddaw in the distance looked stunningly beautiful.
After a couple of hours wandering around the shore of Otterbield Bay I made my way around to Ashness Jetty and despite the warm light of sunrise having passed, pockets of mist remained and there was a beautiful clarity to the air. And what's more I had the place to myself too.
The morning must rank as the finest I've ever had since I picked up a camera.
Pembrokeshire can wait for another time when hopefully I'll be able to share the experience. I only wish I had been able to share this experience too.
Balm for the soul.
A doe and two fawns were leisurely grazing around the neighborhood yesterday. Very little apprehension about my presence.

It must be said that this shot was far from being straightforward for various reasons. One of the issues, people, was thankfully not a serious hazard, although there was always a possibility of an intrusion occurring up to the last second. A late-running IET was sent on the bidirectional up line in front of the tour (coincidently passing us in a patchy cloud), the moment passed fairly quickly to alleviate the apprehensions of 'behind' bowlage. The main concern however was the weather (again), which at one stage engulfed all the town in a blanket of cloud giving a grim outlook for the small gallery. The clouds eventually parted minutes before the main attraction. All in all, the difficult task of getting everything to come together nicely was achieved, which is a miracle when considering the number of variables that could've easily gone wrong.

Second in a series that uses text as a metaphor for the cacophany of non-stop, inner chatter in our heads.
There are very few moments in our Western lives where we're able to reach quiescence of mind. That incessant commentary of our babbling brains blocks or filters our direct apprehension of things as they are.
These thoughts filter, tint and taint what we're seeing to the degree that it's that interpretation, that 'colouring' that we take as "real". Once we're able to quiet the mind down enough, we see directly how NOT true that "picture" really is.
Three SOOC shots of maple blossoms and houses in the Spring, mirrored twice each, treated with light and colour effects and compiled/composed to fill the frame. Texts of varying sizes, fonts, colours and opacities layered over top. No Pano-Sabotage was used.

Merton distinguishes two aspects of wisdom: . . . metaphysical and speculative, an apprehension of the radical structure of human life, an intellectual appreciation of man in his human potentialities and in their fruition. . . . moral, practical, and religious, an awareness of man’s life as a task to be undertaken at great risk, in which tragic failure and creative transcendence are both possible . . . a peculiar understanding of conflict, of the drama of human existence, and especially of the typical causes and signs of moral disaster . . . beyond the conscious and systematic moral principles which may be embodied in an ethical doctrine and which guide our conscious activity. Wisdom also supposes a certain intuitive grasp of unconscious motivations, at least insofar as these are embodied in archetypes and symbolic configurations of the psyche.

Story behind the photo: As an enthusiast photographer, I'm always scouting for interesting locations. So, when I stumbled upon some photographs of Kings Cross station on Instagram, I knew that I had to check it out for myself.
Upon arriving at the station, I realized that it was much larger than I had anticipated, and I quickly became lost. I searched high and low for the specific location I was looking for, but to no avail. As I was wandered, I noticed a few cops patrolling the station with carbines slung across their shoulders. This made me nervous, as I've had bad experiences with security personnel when it comes to photography, as they often misuse their authority.
Despite my apprehension, I mustered myself to approach a lone cop who seemed to be in charge. He had his gloved finger permanently on the trigger of his carbine, which was quite unnerving. However, I showed him the photo I was looking for on Instagram and asked for directions.
To my relief, the cop was surprisingly friendly and helpful. He directed me to the exact location I was looking for and even gave me some tips on how to get the best shot. I thanked him profusely and set myself to play the ‘fishing game’.
All in all, it was a great experience, and I left Kings Cross station feeling grateful for the cop's help and excited to capture the photograph that I had visualized in my mind.

The hell of the living is not something that will be. If there is one, it is what is already here, the hell we live in every day, that we make by being together. There are two ways to escape suffering it. The first is easy for many: accept the hell, and become such a part of it that you can no longer see it. The second is risky and demands constant vigilance and apprehension: seek and learn to recognize who and what, in the midst of hell, are not hell, then make them endure, give them space
[Italo Calvino]
