Inspiration struck me tonight, but thanks to everyone for their suggestions. They got the creative juices flowing again. I considered "The Calm Before The Storm" but the fact that the winds were @ 40 mph belied the "calm" part. It was anything but that day.

Happy Sliders Sunday ( I almost missed it!)

Whilst on our way to Crocodile Bridge we came across these three cheetahs (possibly related) seen in Kruger Park, South Africa. I posted a black and white version sometime back but I've decided I like the coloured one more :))

Thanks for your visit! HSoS!

He has been such a bad dog today! It's been raining, but he has found some mouldy old apple windfalls, and is determined that we will be out there throwing them for him to fetch. He wouldn't come inside, he wouldn't let me dry his feet, he didn't want to do anything that was asked of him - he has learned the power of "No", and, it seems, there is nothing we can do right now. He was so muddy as well...all the floors have needed a good clean as well as the dog himself! It may be, of course that he can't see a lot - he is booked in for a haircut next week....

Its mission was to cross the outdoor carpet before anything ate him. His problem ? It was very chilly out and he was moving in slow motion! I had time to go back in the house, walk to the other end of the house and still get lots of snaps of it! It eventually did make it to safety I'm happy to say! Happy Sabbath everyone! I hope your day is blessed and full of lots of photo ops. :)

This apple tree (Granny Smith) started to bloom again at the end of October, so at the same time we had both blossom and ripe fruits on the same tree. The weather conditions have become very capricious and unpredictable that even the plants have a hard time coping.

Today I don't feel like doing anything

I just wanna lay in my bed

Don't feel like picking up my phone

So leave a message at the tone

'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything

Uh I'm gonna kick my feet up and stare at the fan

Turn the TV on

Throw my hand in my pants

Nobody's gon' tell me I cant, no

I'll be loungin' on the couch just chillin' in my snuggie

Flip to MTV so they can teach me how to Dougie

The Great wall of China stretches nearly 9,000km’s from Shanhaiguan in the east to Lop Lake in the west. This is the Jinshanling section, a 10.5km stretch with 5 passes, 67 towers and 2 beacon towers.

This is my 3rd of the 4 shots I took on my last morning at the wall. This shot is from the small Jinshan tower looking west towards Shalingkou. I saw the view from the top of the tower on my ascent earlier in the morning and, whilst it was certainly stunning, the tower wasn’t conducive to tripod style photography with the walls being around 5foot high with gaps so narrow as to prevent a clean shot with anything wider then about 24mm. I decided I would rig together a make shift tripod through a small window style vista in the wall using my camera bag, filter cases and tripod head balanced carefully on the window ledge. To my surprise it actually worked.

HMM

Out walking with Tasku this morning I was surprised but delighted to see several Holly Blues on this plant. Surprised because mostly they are on the move and rarely settle. Then I realised they were laying eggs (I have one photo to put up where that is obvious). On returning home I looked in my book and realised that the plant must be a type of ivy as the second brood only lay eggs on this particular plant - and the first brood, in April, only lay on holly. Fussy insects! I will have to go back to see if can spot any eggs and again in a few days to look for the caterpillars.

I'd only taken my camera as I wanted to try out my new macro lens so that was an extra bit of luck. 😊

I knew that moving from Florida, that I would miss the burrowing and barred owls ... but I also knew that Colorado would offer up its own variety of owls. I put a few of them high on my list, but probably none higher than the northern pygmy owl. See, I had never seen one before. Several times I had been looking without success. I figured that it would happen when I least expected it.

On this day, we went out in a desperate search to find one ... or perhaps a saw whet owl. No such luck. We had all but given up. As we were driving about, Amy said she saw something that was "too small" to be anything, but I had my binoculars with me, so I fugured why not stop and check it out. So glad that we did ... because we found this guy perched in the bare tree branches! Finally .... it happened and as figured, when we had all but given up for that day anyway.

I couldn't believe how incredibly beautiful and mesmerizing its eyes were. It was clearly not the least bit concerned with us. It would look around from its perch in its vicinity for prey. When it would turn its head we noticed its dots on the back of its head ... "fake eyes" if you will. Amazing!

So excited and felt very thrilled that it blessed us with its presence. :-)

So this week's blog post features this amazing owl, as well as some other birds from the winter in Colorado. Feel free to check it out if you like by clicking:

The RWE EL1s are anything but beautiful, but they are unique and now quite old machines so well worth documenting. The RWE, or Rheinbraun railway is a quasi insular operation between the companies brown coal mines and powerplants just west of Cologne, Germany. The network consists of two primary routes, the Nord-Süd Bahn and the Hambachbahn. Last Saturday I made my first visit to the network with the idea to focus on the Nord-Süd Bahn. This train showed up exactly as I arrived and was happy to so quickly get a EL1 led train. Unfortunately things went downhill from there.

A few notes for those interested in photographing this line and also not so familiar:

1.) Blocks A -E of Kraftwerk Neurath have were shut in March of this year, meaning that the classic shot from the overpass with the power plant in the background is now impossible. Good for the environment, tragic for the photographer.

2.) 90% of trains shove back towards Frimmersdorf, making west/northbound shots very difficult.

3.) There are very few good photo locations on the Nord-Süd Bahn, this one being the best. Unfortunately this spot happens to be right in the path of the cooling tower exhaust shadow! About 30 minutes after this photo the spot was fully in the shadow. I didnt really find a satisfactory angle the rest of the day, in most of the other segments the light is wrong for southbounds or very overgrown.

Ill have to try again for the Hambach side, on this visit getting there would have been a pain due to the closure of the Aachen - Köln line due to a derailment. (always something wrong with that cursed line)

Anything!

Santa Monica, CA

Recently the field of theoretical cosmology has been enervated by the suggestion that our universe is the mirror image of another one stretching back in time before the Big Bang (see, for example, www.research.ed.ac.uk/en/publications/icpti-symmetric-uni... ).

Intrigued, I set out to test whether this was observable in practice. After a quick calculation on the back of an old envelope (cigarette packets now being not Politically Correct) I worked out that conditions would be favourable for an experiment in the period around the vernal equinox for my latitude (51N). At this time the angles of the Earth’s gravitational field, the neutrino flux from the sun and a local EM field could be arranged to the optimum.

So, setting a sufficiently powerful Tesla coil in a glass envelope with an inert gas (I used Nitrogen), I tried it out.

And it worked!

Sometimes I could actually see the dim reflection of the alternate universe appear in the glass capsule, but perhaps the best result was this one where I managed to create a wormhole bridging the paired universes.

If you look carefully at the image though you might observe that the energetic feedback created by the wormhole burnt out my coil… such are the sacrifices of science…

---

Storytelling idiocy aside, this image was one of the fun results of an evening spent with a local friendly group of photographers taking images of lightbulbs on tablets (and other things but I didn’t get that far :( ).

I used a clear glass bulb on my iPaddle which I set up to show some very colourful graphic images that I had generated using Midjourney (I finally found something useful to do with that toybox… The text prompt for this one, if you are interested, was ‘Close - up macro HDR photograph of the centre of mirrored 3D circle sculptures, overlapping rainbow circular fractal, vivid rainbow colours, graphic abstract’).

The bulb was lying on its side at an angle resting on the bayonet fitting so I made the canvas larger and rotated it. Starting in Capture One I dropped the greys to black using a levels adjustment and played with the Clarity and a little Dehaze. In Affinity I sharpened it with High Pass/Linear blend and a bit of Unsharp mask and enriched the colour. Then quite a lot of work with inpainting to remove the vestiges of the iPad and a lot of dust.

PS I forgot to mention that this was a focus stack of ten images, though I suspect only four or five contributed anything useful. The camera did the focusing and I used Helicon Focus for the stacking, which I've not really done before (it was fast, worked with raws and produced a dng output).

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Easter and 100x :)

simple shot ;) ,
