You’ll get over it…” It’s the clichés that cause the trouble. To lose someone you love is to alter your life for ever. You don’t get over it because ‘it” is the person you loved. The pain stops, there are new people, but the gap never closes. How could it? The particularness of someone who mattered enough to grieve over is not made anodyne by death. This hole in my heart is in the shape of you and no-one else can fit it. Why would I want them to?

are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one's very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns :-)

SEM 190T Untaxed since April 2018, and I have to admit that this gave me the buzz that I used to get from spotting in the earlier days, mostly because I don't expect to see anything like this locally any more in these anodyne times we are living in.

I made an adjustment in regards to caffeine. Folgers decaf was about the only kind the stores offered in this area.
Nasty stuff! So I complained to my son and a package containing two kinds of decaf showed up from my son's girlfriend.
What a wonderful surprise!

I find garden centres strangely attractive. Not because of the plants. It is because of the religious merchandise that is relentlessly accumulating in these centres like flotsam washed up on the beach. Naturally, we are dealing with business here. But why would people put a sculpture of a tenth century Chinese monk of the Zen tradition in their garden? Perhaps that beach is not really dead and anodyne like Matthew Arnold's poem "On Dover Beach" has it, but a pretty fertile spiritual marketplace. Perhaps our gardens too are not simply ecological alternatives, but symbolic alternatives as well, pointing to a different life and world.

Until thy feet have trod the Road
Advise not wayside folk,
Nor till thy back has borne the Load
Break in upon the broke.
Chase not with undesired largesse
Of sympathy the heart
Which, knowing her own bitterness,
Presumes to dwell apart.
Employ not that glad hand to raise
The God-forgotten head
To Heaven and all the neighbours' gaze--
Cover thy mouth instead.
The quivering chin, the bitten lip,
The cold and sweating brow,
Later may yearn for fellowship--
Not now, you ass, not now!
Time, not thy ne'er so timely speech,
Life, not thy views thereon,
Shall furnish or deny to each
His consolation.
Or, if impelled to interfere
Exhort, uplift, advise,
Lend not a base, betraying ear
To all the victim's cries.
Only the Lord can understand
When those first pangs begin,
How much is reflex action and
How much is really sin.
E'en from good words thyself refrain,
And tremblingly admit
There is no anodyne for pain
Except the shock of it.
So, when thine own dark hour shall fall,
Unchallenged canst thou say:
"I never worried you at all,
For God's sake go away!"

Milkweed, the favored food of the Monarch Butterfly larvae.
Medicinal uses:
The plant is used medicinally in the United States for the anodyne properties of its root and its rhizome and root have been employed successfully, like those of A. tuberosa, both in powder and infusion, in cases of asthma and typhus fever attended with catarrh, producing expectoration and relieving cough and pain. It has also been used in scrofula with great success.
