Caroline Achaintre ...

Tufted textile works and ceramics have defined the artistic practice of Toulouse-born, London-based artist Caroline Achaintre (b. 1969) for many years. Her reach for techniques with craft connotations stems from a need for expression. Achaintre's art turns the domestically familiar into the strange, even uncanny. Her choice fell on a material "that comes from a domestic context."

The often archaic wall hangings create an unease that begins with the shaggy materiality and continues in the evoked images of the animalistic and primitive. Achaintre also explores the foreign and alien in the guise of the exotic and expressive in her ceramics, reminiscent of masks. They are attractive and repulsive at the same time.

Getuftete Textilarbeiten und Keramiken bestimmen schon seit vielen Jahren die künstlerische Praxis der aus Toulouse stammenden und in London lebenden Künstlerin Caroline Achaintre (geb. 1969). Ihr Griff zu kunsthandwerklich konnotierten Techniken entspringt einem Ausdrucksbedürfnis. Achaintres Kunst wendet das häuslich Vertraute ins Befremdliche, ja Unheimliche. Ihre Wahl fiel auf ein Material, „das aus einem heimischen Kontext“ stammt.

Die oft archaisch anmutenden Wandbehänge erzeugen ein Unbehagen, das bei der der zotteligen Materialität beginnt und sich in den heraufbeschworenen Bildern des Animalischen und Primitiven fortsetzt. Achaintre untersucht das Fremde und Befremdliche im Gewand des Exotischen und Expressiven auch in ihren an Masken erinnernden Keramiken. Sie sind anziehend und abstoßend zugleich.

This is Holly, the Collie I adopted in 1999 when she was five years old. She was blind in one eye from a congenital defect known as microphthalmia or small eye. It never slowed her down though. She ruled my younger dog even though he outweighed her by 15 pounds. And she was a fierce hunter, often leaving small dead animals by the back door as if she was a cat. She loved being outside and dug multiple beds in the yard when we lived in Indiana. In this photo, she was 13 years old. She lived another two years, passing away from kidney failure in 2010.

As a side note, when I bought my first DSLR back in late 2009, I got a free copy of Photoshop Elements with the camera. This photo of Holly was the very first one I tried to manipulate with artistic effects. The difference between that version and this one that I created yesterday is amazing to me. I had no idea where that initial experiment would lead. :-)

The "Lead To Live" Mural," located on the north facing wall of the Mexic-Arte Museum at Congress and Fifth St. in downtown Austin, makes a statement that the future relies on the past just as much as the past relies on the present to carry on the message and work that can never yield against never ending oppressive forces. Dedicated to the long time East Austin activist Paul "Pablo" Hernandez, a major figure in Austin politics who died in 2020, the mural is the work of local artist Amado Castillo III and his 19-year-old son Amado Castillo IV, who partnered with the museum to create the mural.

The mural depicts a tricolored background reminiscent of the Mexican flag. On the left green section an ever-growing Austin skyline is shown with prominent construction cranes that take up as much space as each iconic building. Under the skyline a group of mustangs gallop freely representing the animalistic nature of freedom and liberation from a city that never ceases to demand more for its growth.

In the middle white portion of the flag is the main subject largely illustrated from a bold black and white photo from local public historic archives. Influential East Austin Chicano activist, a major figure in Austin politics, and a founder of the local Brown Berets; Paul Hernandez holds a megaphone with a statement taken from signs held by the youth during the police brutality and murder of José “Joe” Campos Torres marches in downtown Austin of 1977 that reads “Los muertos no hablan (The dead do not speak). It's up to us!"

This statement comes out of Paul’s megaphone and simultaneously is carried by becoming the statement of a protest sign held by current marginalized people like the elderly and androgynous indigenous faces. Holding a starkly lit monochromatic American flag, this group together with the sound waves and text coming out of Paul’s megaphone are breaking a large chain that comes from the background and into the bottom right corner of the foreground.

On the top right corner is a contemporary interpretation of the United Farm Workers logo originally created by Cesar Chavez and his cousin Manuel. This new take is less obvious but still has a now realistic black eagle spreading its wings over and out of the bounds of a white circular shape like a worm’s eye view of an eagle flying under the sun.

La Grotta di Pan di Villa Reale è il più antico ninfeo delle ville lucchesi. Fu realizzato tra il 1570 e il 1580 ed è dedicato a Pan, dio dei pastori, della campagna e delle selve, dalle sembianze per metà umane e metà animalesche.

La costruzione, che in origine apparteneva al giardino della Villa del Vescovo, è attribuibile a Bernardo Buontalenti o a un architetto sotto la sua influenza. Il piano superiore fu aggiunto durante la prima metà dell’Ottocento per volere di Carlo Ludovico di Borbone.

The Grotta di Pan of Villa Reale is the oldest nymphaeum of the Lucca villas. It was built between 1570 and 1580 and is dedicated to Pan, god of shepherds, of the countryside and of the woods, with half human and half animalistic features.

The building, which originally belonged to the garden of the Villa del Vescovo, is attributable to Bernardo Buontalenti or to an architect under his influence. The upper floor was added during the first half of the nineteenth century at the behest of Charles Louis of Bourbon.

I'm firmly stuck in the upcoming Na'vihype after I watched the trailer earlier this year actually, but I watched the AvatarMovie the day before yesterday and finally made a Na'vishurishape, like I had intended since I saw the trailer because I like the more animalistic look to it~
