It has certainly been a joy to get back to using my Nikon D850 again. The Leica D-Lux 7 is a handy camera to have in the pocket, but it is very limited in scope compared to the full frame DSLR. It is not insignificant that the D850 is referred to as a "baby medium format camera". It gives that performance and the images (235MB in TIFF files) are always best viewed large.

After my visit to Melbourne (which you have been looking at for the past month or more), two things forced a layoff from actually taking photographs: The first is that I felt extremely burnt out by the whole social media rigamarole. Frankly I am sick of trying to produce pictures that will garner more views and faves (I gave up chasing Explores a long time ago as Flickr and I continue our cool relationship, and I can't be bothered faving 1000 photos a day to attract the algorithm's attention).

I needed to get back to taking the sort of photographs that reflect who I am and the artistic influences that I respect. And secondly, a change of employment meant that my time has been limited, but I have come to see this as a blessing. Less really is more. So after a deliberate layoff from using a camera for nearly two months, I ventured out for the first time last Saturday to capture some late afternoon street shots and sunsets. I'll let you be the judge, but I was very pleased with the results.

I've used the last two months to think more deeply about my compositions. I've been reading all the time and of course, looking at photographs. I've always been a person that believes sound theory leads to better practical results - and this seems to be very true in photography.

"Among the Reeds" is a direct homage to one of the pioneers of artistic landscape photography, the East Anglian P.H. Emerson (1856-1936). In the previous posting I have described his work in relation to Nancy Newhall's fine biography. I commend it to you.

The exhibition "Hercules of the Arts" at Liechtenstein Garden Palace in Vienna presents works of art acquired by Johann Adam Andreas and focuses on the buildings and their furnishings, too. On display are masterpieces by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonis van Dyck and Andrea Pozzo, among others and one of the best surviving French ceremonial coaches - the "Golden Carriage" from 1738

Among the various scenes in the 2019 movie The Crown, in one Prince Philip meets the Apollo 11 Astronauts. He can not imagine a more adventurous life than the lives they lead. Conversely, the Astronauts can not image a more adventurous life than that of the Prince of England. Some how, "the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence",

I felt this way for a moment while taking this shot from the starboard side of the "Queen Of Sorry I'm Late" Ferry. While ensconced in the very activity that brings me so much delight, a part of me could not imagine a more adventurous moment than sailing with the mountains and sunset at one's back. And to add to this moment, it was a David and Goliath scenario as the sailboat steered headlong toward the Ferry. However, the skipper knew well, the Ferry would not be there when he arrived.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday!

Thank you in advance for your views, comments, and faves. They are much appreciated!

"When I am among the trees,

especially the willows and the honey locust,

equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,

they give off such hints of gladness.

I would almost say that they save me, and daily.

I am so distant from the hope of myself,

in which I have goodness, and discernment,

and never hurry through the world

but walk slowly, and bow often.

Around me the trees stir in their leaves

and call out, “Stay awhile.”

The light flows from their branches.

And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,

“and you too have come

into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled

with light, and to shine.” – Mary Oliver

The exposed roots of mangroves, photographed at midday with their shadows, were used to create this image of the capital L.

The supporting roots of mangroves project above the mud and have small openings through which air enters, passing through the soft spongy tissue to the roots beneath the mud.

Our first cultivated blossoms this year are on heather planted last summer. It survived the winter covered by spruce boughs. Now we will find out if our four local deer like to eat it...

Literally set among the suggestive rocks of the Lucanian Dolomites , Castelmezzano , in the province of Potenza , is one of the most precious jewels of Basilicata . Its perched houses reminiscent of a crib , the rugged peaks that frame it, the small alleys and stairways that run through it offer enchanting views that truly conquer everyone and give off the perfect atmosphere for a weekend of high romance . The splendid location would be enough to make the resort an ideal destination for an extremely pleasant couple's stay , but in reality Castelmezzano has much more to offer visitors in search of a romantic atmosphere.

The emotion begins to grow already along the way when, after crossing a spectacular gorge , you find yourself walking along a tunnel dug into the rock , at the exit of which the view of the village clinging to the Lucanian Dolomites reaches straight to the heart, giving you immediately the impression of being in the right place with the right person. The shapes of the rocky peaks and their play of lights and shadows explain their evocative names, ranging from "beak of vicetta" to "lion's mouth" up to "anvil" and " golden eagle" , while the historic center with its typically medieval structure, enchants with the beauty of its houses wedged between the rocks and surmounted by roofs in sandstone slabs . Walking along the narrow alleys of the historic center and climbing the small stairways, you reach magnificent panoramic points from which to enjoy a splendid view of the surrounding landscapes , in a continuous interaction between urbanized views and natural sceneries that have earned the town the nickname of the city - nature .

Furthermore, Castelmezzano is included in the list of the Most Beautiful Villages of Italy and, admiring the artistic and architectural treasures that it holds, immediately explains why. Piazza Caizzo with the splendid mother church of Santa Maria dell'Olmo is only the beginning of a magnificent itinerary dedicated to history and beauty. Walking along the main street of the town , with the Town Hall building to adorn it, you reach the ruins of the castle and, entering the streets of the center, you discover other precious buildings ranging from the elegant Palazzo Ducale to Palazzo Coiro . Going outside the town and exploring the surroundings, you will discover other enchanting surprises. The ancient mills with roofs made of local chiang chimate stone slabs dot the Caperrino valley crossed by picturesque buildings, stairways and bridges , while vestiges of distant eras peep out among the uncontaminated scenery of the Gallipoli Cognato Piccole Dolomiti Park .
