Nicolas Fontaine, Bell Labs Researcher, shows some of the ways Bell Labs is constantly pushing the boundaries of optical communications providing a glimpse into Bell Labs' Silicon Lightwave Integration Models Line (SlimLine) clean-room, which is used for prototyping optical components, including those in the emerging area of silicon photonics.

The team also highlighted Space Division Multiplexing (SDM), which uses the added dimension of space to create multiple pathways through a single optical fiber, similar to taking multiple superhighways (and all the traffic on them) and packing them into the space occupied by a single superhighway today.

Bell Labs Researchers Hong Jiang, far left, and Gang Huang discuss 'compressive sensing,’ a technique that provides a powerful way to represent multi-media signals as a series of ‘measurements’.

Compressive sensing is a technique that can reduce the amount of data that networks need to transport, which is particularly important in the area of video transmission accounting for the majority of traffic carried on networks.

The team recently developed a ‘lensless camera’ that can record images using a series of measurements, enabling an image to be captured using only ¼ of the pixels of a conventional camera.

Robert Willett, Bell Labs Researcher, discusses breakthrough work being done at the Bell Labs Quantum Computing Lab to directly harness the power of atoms and molecules to perform typical computing, memory storage and processing tasks.

Quantum computers have the potential to perform certain calculations significantly faster, in fact orders of magnitude faster, than any silicon-based computer.

Keith Chow of Alcatel-Lucent's Fixed Access research team discusses his work on bit interleaved passive optical networking (Bi-PON), a new protocol for fiber-optic broadband access networks that reduces power consumption.

Depending on the traffic load, this new technique can lead to energy efficiency gains of up to 100x for the protocol processing, offering a potential opportunity to drive down the cost and power consumption profile of broadband networks in the face of ever-increasing demand.
