Found this group of Dowitchers catching a catnap on the local pond... a tranquil moment in an awesome morning !!

(I think these are Short-billed Dowitchers; please correct me if I’m wrong).

The name of this species could be misleading: it is 'short-billed' only by comparison to the Long-billed Dowitcher, and longer-billed than the average shorebird. Flocks of Short-billed Dowitchers wade in shallow water over coastal mudflats. They often seem rather tame, allowing a close approach when they are busy feeding.

Dowitchers Breed in three distinct regions, with distinct migratory routes and wintering areas. Alaska birds winter on Pacific Coast, central Canada birds migrate through Great Plains and along Atlantic Coast, eastern Canada birds stay east, winter as far south as Brazil.

Migrating and wintering Dowitchers favor coastal habitats, especially tidal flats on protected estuaries and bays, also lagoons, salt marshes, sometimes sandy beaches. Migrants also stop inland on freshwater ponds with muddy margins. Dowitchers breed in far north, mostly in open bogs, marshes, and edges of lakes within coniferous forest zone.

After a week with me Timmy is allowed for the first time

on the terrace secured with a cat net. The cat net is planned for about 4 weeks.

Update: 2 years later the cat net ist still there - I close the door to the freedom around midnight, but Timmy is allwed to be on the terrace every time, and he enjoys that.

Update: in 2022 the cat net was finally removed :-)

100's of thousands migrate through Nebraska midlands on their way to spring nesting area, stop over allows them to gorge for a few weeks on farm fields for the long flight north......

The shafts are the lifelines of a mine because they only can be reached trought perpendicular entrances. This allows materials and miners to be brought down an the mined materials to be brought up.

The transport in the shafts is done with giant elevator machines.

What we see is the giant elevator machine of the coalmine of Winterslag (Belgium), equipped with 2 Direct Current motors of 10.000 Volt each and it raised or lowered the lift cages at a speed from 72 km per hour until a depth of 750 meters.

This crafty lady has been in operation from 1916 to 1988 and has raised a total of 66.593.000 tons of coal from below the mine.

The big wheel in the middle is the so called "Koepe disc" around which an arm thick steel cable, weighing 100 tons, was wound half a turn. The lift cages were attached at both ends of this cable.

The machine operator had a very responsible task and no computers were available: it was purely manual and was done with hands, eyes and ears.

The dashboard stands in front of the machine and consists of bells with which signals were passed from below, volt and ammeters and a level gauge which shows the movement of the lift cages and its speed in the shaft.

Red Fox _ Vulpes Vulpes

_8101776-1

When fox-hunting with dogs was legal in this country, ( which was not so very long ago), what let the fox down was the fact that as it’s brush (or tail) collected more mud and detritus in the course of the chase it tired and slowed down the fox and enabled the hounds to run it down, so that the red coated “gentlemen” of the hunt could allow them to tear it to pieces.

As Oscar Wilde put it, “ the unspeakable in pursuit of the uneatable.”

I’m pleased to say that many a wily fox outsmarted it’s pursuers, and spoiled a “good day’s hunting.”

The red crab is called Kalle (that's the name he came with) and he is Tofu's newest toy. Usually Tofu is fond of Valerian but not so much in Kalle's case. He sometimes plays with him, though, or even allows him to share his bed. The story continues in the comments....

U Bein Bridge in Burma located near Mandalay specifically in the city of Amarapura in Myanmar. It's one or maybe the longest wooden bridge with a length of 1,2 kilometers, and was built around 1850. A few minutes from the bridge, there is a old monastery that you can visit, every morning the monks do a procession that's worth to see (no pictures allowed there).

Covid19 Diary April 24, 2020. I have lost count of the quarantine days. I have lost count of the time that passes. I can only photograph what I can, I can only see what I am allowed. The imagination spreads over what I see, as in this shot where in addition to the wonder of Nature I see two clouds that seem to form two hands that seem to want to tell me something that something that the mood conveys: Pray!

Despite the parachute structure of the individual Dandelion seeds being largely made up of empty space, it is believed their design creates a ring-shaped air bubble ("separated vortex ring") which slows their descent to the ground and allows them to spread further afield (and into my garden as an unfortunate consequence). It is thought their design is up to four times more efficient that a conventional parachute.

The Bayon is a richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia. Built in the late 12th or early 13th century as the state temple of the Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII, the Bayon stands at the center of Jayavarman's capital, Angkor Thom. Following Jayavarman's death, it was modified and augmented by later Hindu and Theravada Buddhist kings in accordance with their own religious preferences.

The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace and cluster around its central peak. The temple has two sets of bas-reliefs, which present a combination of mythological, historical, and mundane scenes. The main conservatory body, the Japanese Government Team for the Safeguarding of Angkor (the JSA) has described the temple as "the most striking expression of the baroque style" of Khmer architecture, as contrasted with the classical style of Angkor Wat. An image of a Yellow-throated Vireo taken last weekend at Yarmouth Natural Heritage area in Sparta, Ontario.

I was watching for a brood of young ducks I had just seen when this fine fellow landed on a branch right in front of me. I had to shorten my focal length down to capture a good shot. Luckily he seemed undisturbed by me and stayed perched for awhile allowing me to get many good shots.

Thanks for viewing and have a great weekend!!

What a joyful experience this bird allowed me, while it hung out on this snag and made a number of dashes after bugs. Interestingly, I had a similar experience almost 3 years ago within yards of this shoot, when I had just invested in the big glass. Some of you may know I swapped out that glass in 2019, along with most of the remaining gear by that manufacturer. That subsequent ridiculous investment may not be for everyone, but I'm an old lady and I need all the help I can get. I've never looked back; I know I get a better yield and less missed opportunities. From the new rolling blind, btw.

On the 4th of Advent, the weather allowed us to experience a fantastic winter day. The frost decorated all the trees overnight so I didn't have to go far from the house to capture that glorious winter mood.

Please allow me to introduce myself

I'm a man of wealth and taste

I've been around for a long, long year

Stole many a man's soul and faith

And I was 'round when Jesus Christ

Had his moment of doubt and pain

Made damn sure that Pilate

Washed his hands and sealed his fate

Pleased to meet you

Hope you guess my name

But what's puzzling you

Is the nature of my game

Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful mothers around the world! Have a great weekend everyone!

Kingfishers are very hard to get close to in Kalifornia. I see these little guy's fairly often, but they refuse to allow me to get close enough to get a decent photo. I think they may believe I'm trying to steal their soul or something? :^ P

I must have just wore this guy down, because he kept flying back and forth between two branches about 100 yds apart, for half an hour or so, before I was able to get this shot. ( I did get the exercise I needed that day however.) Which of course is by no means perfect. But it just maybe the closest thing to perfect this old man can manage, because he was waring me down way more than himself. :^ P

If you can picture what an old man of nearly 80 years old might look like in the brush, carrying a 10 lb. giant lens, and a 3 lb. camera with two torn rotator cuffs that I can barely host it to my eye and then hold it steady enough to squeeze off a shot while trembling so bad the whole thing isn't just a blur. Wearing camouflage of course, because we have to show the birds we are willing to through lots of money into our efforts to photograph them, while they sit in the trees laughing at us. Birds can see 10 times better than people, we aren't fooling them. But we are impressing the heck out of the fashion police. : ^ )

The best way of course get a great shot of these little guy's is to purchase a small camouflage blind (tent) and set it up where we know he's going to be an hour or so before the sun comes up. However, where I go to take photos usually you aren't allowed to be there before the sun comes up and they will not allow you to put up a blind. So my friends this is my best effort to date, but I will keep trying to get the perfect shot, I hope you like it?

SALVATION THROUGH FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS ALONE!

❤️❤️ IT'S ALL JESUS AND NONE OF OURSELVES! ❤️❤️

1. Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2. BY THIS GOSPEL YOU ARE SAVED, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.

3. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4. that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5. and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8. and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

9. For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them--yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11. Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11)

7. Therefore Jesus said again, "I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9. I am the gate; whoever enters through me WILL BE SAVED. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. 10. The thief comes only to STEAL and KILL and DESTROY; I have come that they may have LIFE, and have it to the FULL. (John 10:7-10)

Laowa 2X Super Macro

These are 3" x 3" Post-It Notes that have been rolled in half and held together with a paper clip. The light source is a large window at the top left. The 3 main circle-top areas are less than 1.5" total width, so the estimated total width is less than 2.5" W. It's fun to turn the paper and adjust the camera to see numerous views of the same subject. Plus, the super macro lens allows me to get very close to the subject, and the depth-of-field is extremely shallow. This lens blurs the background at f/8.0 or less, but unfortunately doesn't record the depth-of-field in the EXIF data. I'm guessing this is f/4.0 or lower. I'm a rookie with this lens and have plenty to learn. But, I like that it allows me to think "outside the box". In other words, it's fun.

Please have a great day.....

In two plus years of active macro photography, I've only had two times when a dragonfly stayed still long enough for me to take multiple photos.

This fellow made my day yesterday when he appeared and allowed me to take several shots.....

The best time to photograph Ísafjörður harbor with fishing boats is during the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and golden. This time of day provides beautiful lighting and fewer crowds, allowing you to capture the serene atmosphere of the harbor.

Blea Tarn in the English Lake District. Side Pike is the prominent lump just right of centre, with Harrison Stickle, one of the Langdale Pikes in the distance.

Long exposures were a challenge on this day, with a strong wind blowing off the mountains, giving tripod problems. Some shots worked, some didn't, but all needed some degree of shelter during the exposure.

A B&W 10 stop ND filter allowed a 30 second exposure.

Image taken in the backyard approximately 12 feet from the palm stump. This little guy is my buddy and allows me to be much closer to him but my lens does not. Info from Wikipedia. To my surprise after checking out Wikipedia the count of Yellow-Throated warblers for the GBBC is 2.

I have not photographed the female but I have been seeing her in the thicket of the trees. She is a bit shy and I just could not ID her until this little guy took her some food yesterday and I saw images on Wikipedia. This image was taken yesterday, I have other images that were taken during the GBBC so I will use one of those for ID purposes when I upload the information.

Also like the bluebird diet does not mention peanuts, the diet info for this little beauty does not mention them. This guy is a little peanut pirate. He loves them!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellow-throated_warbler

These birds breed in southeastern North America, and their breeding ranges extend from southern Pennsylvania and northern Missouri, to the Gulf of Mexico. One subspecies, from northwest Florida, is resident all year round. The other populations of this species are migratory, wintering at the Gulf Coast, eastern Central America, and the Caribbean. Vagrant wintering birds are sometimes seen in northernmost South America.[2][4]

The yellow-throated warbler is a woodland species with a preference for coniferous or swamp tree species, in which it preferably nests. They are insectivorous, but will include a considerable amount of berries and nectar in their diet outside the breeding season. Food is typically picked off tree branches directly, but flying insects may be caught in a brief hover.[2][5]

These birds build cup-shaped nests which are built in a trees, and are concealed amongst conifer needles or Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usneoides). Their clutches consist of 3–5 (usually 4) eggs.[2]

The yellow-throated warbler is not considered a threatened species by the IUCN.[1]

The Pan di Zucchero island and, opposite, Porto Flavia.

Porto Flavia is located at the end of a tunnel about 600 meters long, dug into the rock by miners, it comes out in the middle of an overhang that offers a breathtaking view of the suggestive stack of Pan di Zucchero, a natural monument of 132 meters.

Porto Flavia, inside the promontory that dominates Masua, in the territory of Iglesias, built between 1922 and 1924, is a daring work suspended between sky and sea, which allowed the direct loading of minerals, destined for north-European foundries, on ships, drastically reducing transport times and costs.

During the first few weeks of isolation, Sue and I would pause at this bench midway in our walk. It has since, supposedly, become forbidden to sit on although there is no sign on it. We still walk to that point and look across the river for a moment or two, and I have taken a few photos from there as well.
