This build has been sitting around, half-finished on my desk for about 5 months now. Needless to say, I’m very glad to finally be done with it! I started building it back in January, after seeing Marius Herrmann’s incredible model, Alfheim. Due to some lack of planning on my part though, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted in my build, which led to me setting it aside for several months. After it had collected a thick layer of dust, I decided I should just finish it and get it out of the way. So this is what I came up with. Not overly happy with the final result, but I’m quite thrilled to be able to move on to other projects without this taking up space in our build area!

S/V Noorderlicht (Northern Light or Aurora Borealis) is a two-masted schooner built in 1910 as a light sailing vessel for the German Navy. Since the 1990s, she has served as one of the expedition cruise vessels for Oceanwide Expeditions, sailing to some of the most remote locations in the Arctic, particularly the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.

Seldom mentioned Alfheim was one of the Nine Realms in Norse mythology, a world inhabited by elves. There were two types of elves in Norse lore: the Ljósálfar, or “Light Elves,” and the Dökkálfar, or “Dark Elves.” Though Alfheim was never described in the sources, it may be surmised that the realm embodied the extreme luminosity and darkness characteristic of its inhabitants.
Alfheim was said to be ruled by Freyr, suggesting a deep association with the magic of the Vanir gods. Like the other realms, Alfheim hung from the branches of Yggdrasil, the world tree at the center of Norse cosmology.
Here it is, my last build of the year: Alfheim from God of War (2018)
I have never played a God of War game before (just seen playthroughs of them), so I went into the new one without any expectations. And this game left me speechless! It is an incredibly well written and designed game. So of course I had to end this year with a model inspired by it.
Originally I played with the idea of building a Troll or another sculpture from the game. But since I built a lot of creatures this year, I wanted to push myself into another direction. So I built my first real diorama in years.
If you have played God of War, you know that you spent a lot of time riding a boat. And those somber moments with Kratos and Atreus trying to bridge the distance between them while journeying through the realms, are at the core of God of War.
Additionally, arriving in the 2nd realm was a magical moment for me. Experiencing the scale and beauty of this game was breathtaking.
So I decided to capture that moment of them visiting Alfheim in my build.
Since this is a diorama, I could implement some more ideas and aspects of the world e.g. Sindri's Workshop or the pathways and temples typically found in Alfheim.
Hope you like the model! :)
I had the opportunity to work on a lot of fun projects this year, and I finished more builds than any prior year.
THANK YOU ALL so much for the continuous support!
See you next year!

Alfheim was buildt to be a hunting cabin Barbara Arbuthnott and her Scottish friends in Sunndal, Norway in 1876. Buildt in Scottish Highland style.
I'm glad I spent several hours watching a YouTube "out the front" cam taken from a train crossing Norway on the line to Bergen. That and the paintings of Thomas Hart Benton capture feelings you only find walking long distances along railroad tracks alone.

Alfheim (Old Norse: Álfheimr, 'elf home') is one of the Nine Worlds and home
of the Light Elves in Norse mythology.
'Álfheimr' and all photographs you find here on Flickr are available as prints and can be ordered in different sizes and qualities.

Ports are strange places, not unlike truckstops. I doubt Scandinavian seaports are much different than most others.

"L'Arbre Monde" dans la mythologie nordique, l'abre sacré qui soutient les neuf royaumes : Ásgard, Vanaheim, Álfheim, Midgard, Jötunheim, Svartalfheim, Nilfheim, Muspellheim et Helheim.
Unspoilt northern Norway, over 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, but warmed by the Gulf Stream. View over the city of Tromso from the mountain ledge called Storsteinen, after taking the 4 minute journey in the cable car (Fjellheisen). The ledge is 1,378 feet above sea level. I think that the stadium on the extreme right is Alfheim Stadion, a football stadium and home of Norwegian Premier League side Tromsø IL.

Kirito, pinned against the wall, felt Avenger's hand grasp his wrist. Her hand felt... soft. Her face was so close to his. Her eyes were a golden color he had never seen before. He could feel her warm breath on his face. How had he not noticed before how good she smelled?
"Ooh, Elf-boy..." Avenger whispered. Kirito felt his face redden.

The fight moved into a darker passage. Avenger held her own against Kritio’s two-sword attack, always keeping an eye on Kirito’s eyes to discern his next move.
“Is this the best you’ve got, Elf-boy?” Avenger challenged San she prepared her attack. She measured the speed and rhythm of Kirito’s attacks, sensing an opening.
