Auguste Rodin, the renowned French sculptor, is best known for his masterpieces that have left an indelible mark on the world of art. Among his most celebrated works is "The Gates of Hell," a monumental sculpture that stands as a testament to his genius and creative vision.
"The Gates of Hell" is a monumental piece that Rodin began in 1880 and worked on for several decades. It was initially commissioned as a decorative feature for a new decorative arts museum in Paris but was never completed as planned. Instead, it evolved into a standalone masterpiece.
The sculpture is a complex composition, teeming with a multitude of figures and themes from Dante Alighieri's "Inferno," part of his epic poem "The Divine Comedy." The piece portrays a cacophony of human emotions and struggles, encompassing themes of torment, anguish, and passion. Rodin's mastery in sculpting the human form is evident in the intricate detailing of each figure and their expressions, which range from despair to ecstasy.
"The Gates of Hell" is not merely a sculpture but a symbolic representation of the human condition. Rodin's commitment to conveying the depths of human emotion and experience is palpable, making this work a remarkable exploration of the human psyche.
Today, "The Gates of Hell" is considered one of Rodin's most iconic creations and a cornerstone of modern sculpture. Its influence has transcended its original intent, earning its place as a masterpiece in the realm of art history, forever immortalizing Auguste Rodin's artistic legacy.

Extract from chapter 4 - The Lull before the storm.
Queen Ophelia Hyde ruler of the kingdom of Brodenwood stands slightly in the shadows as she talks with Queen Celeste Vondran, a Wisp from the Marshlands. Queen Hyde was a Darkling, a race that could appear human but were in fact demonic in appearance. Their control over their human image was lost whenever they became enraged and their true appearance took over. The Darkling race used the human appearance to help them interact with the many humans that lived around their kingdom… safe in their own kingdom and homes they reverted to their natural Darkling appearance. They preferred the shadows even in human form as it was their nature to use these while hunting.
Queen Vondran laughed and joked with Queen Hyde while glancing around the great hall looking for her rival the Amethyst Empress Jasmine Moonglow. Celeste was a Wisp, a race of people who while being able to take on complete solid human form with an immense amount of concentration for very short periods of time were in their natural state in fact gaseous. In their true form they could mimic the human shape and features but some humans found it unnerving to converse with what was effectively ‘fog with a face’. The Wisp while a peaceful race could defend themselves when they had to…either by taking on full solid human form or seeping into the noses and mouths of attackers and preventing them from breathing while in their true gaseous state.
