Sixth prototype North American YOV-10A BuNo 152884. North American photo via Garrett AiResearch. This is one of the very best YOV-10A photos I was able find in the Garrett photo archives or anywhere else for that matter, This prototype was the first to have the 40 foot wing although this particular wing is not representative of the final production version. Scanned from 4x5 color negative.

Union Pacific GP9 No. 261 sits at North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah the afternoon of March 24, 1979. In April 1956, UP 261, 281, and 185B were equipped with AiResearch Model T-30 turbochargers. To improve performance, UP 261 and 281 received 20" x 20" openings along the carboy doors for additional cool air to feed the intakes. Tests showed overall performance benefited from the openings, but a less expensive rooftop design was adopted. Even though the turbocharger was removed in 1962, UP 261 retained the extra door opening holes until retirement from the roster in 1981. History from UtahRails.net.

At the time this photo was taken, the aircraft, a C-53 N8336C, was known as Spirit of Benovia. it has been renamed Spirit of Douglas and a brand new livery has been applied . The aircraft was renamed in honor of Donald Douglas Sr., who is considered the father of commercial aviation. In 1914, Douglas was the first person to be awarded a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering at MIT, completing the four-year course in half the time. After several years with the Glenn Martin Company where he rose to chief engineer at the age of 23, Douglas struck out on his own with the Douglas Aircraft Company and went from employing 22 people to being the fourth-largest business in the US during WWII.
Spirit of Douglas was built at Douglas Aircraft’s plant in Santa Monica, California, and accepted by the U.S. Army Air Forces (USAAF) on June 29th, 1942. The C-53 was primarily designed to drop paratroopers and tow gliders and differs from the C-47 in having a lighter strength floor and no double cargo door. She flew out to Karachi, India (now in Pakistan) in August 1942, initially for service with the Royal Air Force as serial FJ712, but transferred to the 1st Troop Carrier Squadron, 10th Air Force, USAAF in late December 1942, serving the rest of the war in the CBI Theatre.
She went into civilian ownership in India, then China right after WWII, being owned for a while by General Claire Chennault, commander of the American Volunteer Group (AVG, aslo know as the Flying Tigers). reportedly flying Chiang Kai-shek in the Civil Air Transport company out of Taipei, Formosa (now Taiwan).
During the mid-50s, the aircraft received a luxurious VIP interior and an AiResearch Maximizer speed kit. She passed through several other owners over the years, including the Kalamazoo Aviation History Museum during the 1980s until its last owners Joe Anderson and Mary Dewane, owners of Benovia Winery in California. The aircraft is currently owned and lovingly cared for by a New Zealand-based family.

The first prototype North American YOV-10A Bronco, BuNo 152879, at the Garrett AiResearch Flight Test hangar in the summer of 1968. The aircraft by this time had received a number of modifications, most notably a 40-foot span wing and uprated T76 engines. The reason for its use by Garrett was to accumulate a lot of hours on the engines so they could anticipate issues that might arise in service as it was just being introduced to squadrons in Vietnam.
Interestingly the 40-foot wing was not a production type wing in that the tailbooms were still the same distance apart as on the original 30-foot wings fitted to the prototypes. On the production models the booms were each 6 inches farther out from the aircraft centerline. It also has the original type horizontal stabilizer but does have improved vertical stabilizer top fairings that are similar but not identical to the production versions.
This is one of several photos taken by Garrett and are the only photos I've seen of 152879 with a 40-foot wing. Oddly, after it left Phoenix it was re-fitted with a 30-foot wing fitted with wingtip extensions bringing the span to 34 feet. This configuration was introduced on several prototypes earlier in the test program as an interim measure while the 40-foot wing was being designed. Not sure why they went "backwards" from the longer wing on 152879 but it was used for a time at PAX and might have had something to do with testing they were using it for. Possibly to get more speed out of it.
If anyone happens to come across other photos of this aircraft with the 40-foot wing as in this photo, I would love to see them!
This is the first prototype of the OV-10A which flew for the first time on this date (July 16, 1965) 57 years ago at North American Aviation's plant in Columbus, Ohio with Ed Gillespie at the controls.

The first prototype North American YOV-10A at Port Columbus Airport, Columbus, Ohio, prior to its first flight 55 years ago today, July 16, 1965. Hard to believe it was that long ago.
Later in its life (1968) this particular YOV-10A was fitted with the longer 40 foot wing and was tested extensively in Phoenix, Arizona where the Garrett/AiResearch T76 engines were built. Interestingly the longer production-like wing was replaced with the shorter wing once again (with tip extensions, 34 foot span) and was flown for some time in that configuration at Patuxent River. It ended up at China Lake.

Developed from the short lived Mark III RS1600i a homologation special, for Group A/N competition, launched at the begining of 1983 and gone by September. The 1600i was powered by a 1597cc CVH injection engine with an output of 115bhp, matched with a close ratio five speed transmission.
The RS Turbo followed in 1984, using the same basic engine, but Turbocharged with the use of a Garret AIResearch Turbo, and producing 132bhp which remained throughout its life. The RS Turbo remained in production until 1990, but models can be split into Series 1 based on the Mk.III Escort until 1986 and the Series 2 based on the fourth generation Escort.
The RS Turbo Series 1 was only marketed in a few European nations as production was limited to 5,000 examples, all in white. They were well equipped, with the alloy wheels from the limited production RS 1600i, Recaro seats, and a limited slip differential with only one non white car, a black example built especially for Lady Diana Spencer later HRH Princess of Wales.

The final performance update arrived in the form of the turbocharged 132 PS (97 kW) RS Turbo model in October 1984. Using the same basic engine as the 1983 RS 1600i but with a Garrett AiResearch Turbocharger to give 132 bhp which remained unchanged throughout production. The RS Turbo Series 1 was only marketed in a few European nations as production was limited to 5,000 examples, almost all in white. They were well equipped, with the alloy wheels from the limited production RS 1600i, Recaro seats, and a limited slip differential. One car was finished in black; it was built especially for Lady Diana.[ The Series 2 RS Turbo continued with the 1986 MKIV model.

This incredible combination of a Citroën SM converted into a pick-up, with an other Citroën SM on a trailer, was the long life project of Jerry Hathaway (1946-2021) from California.
Even the trailer has the hydraulic suspension of Citroën.
The SM enjoyed great success in the USA from the time of its introduction there in April 1972, when it was voted ‘Car of the Year’ by Motor Trend. The USA was the third largest market for the Citroën SM, after France and Italy, and the car was most successful in California. At the end of 1973, the last Citroën SMs were sold in the USA. New rules were scheduled to come into force for 1974, in particular the requirement for ‘impact-resistant’ bumpers, and Citroën was unwilling to make the necessary changes to what was a relatively low-volume model. By the time production ceased some 12,920 SMs had been built, only 2,037 of which were sold in the USA.
Fast forward to 1976 and Jerry Hathaway was by then working at another dealership, which was about to drop its Citroën franchise. He contacted Citroën and clinched a deal to take over the local franchise and and was able to buy his employer’s stock of spares and tools at cost price. It was the start of SM World Ltd, which has since gone on to become the USA’s foremost specialist for Citroën SM spares, repairs, and restoration.
One of Jerry’s customers was John McKibben, a former Bonneville Salt Flats racer, who suggested that the SM’s aerodynamic shape had the potential to make it a speed record car. Jerry had always harboured the ambition to be a drag racer, and when a damaged SM turned up at the workshop, destined to be cannibalized for parts, the project’s wheels were set in motion. The SM was duly restored to concours condition and transformed into an impeccable land speed record contender, retaining the stock hydro-pneumatic suspension and five-speed manual transmission. In the SM record car’s first incarnation the 3.0-litre Maserati V6 engine was left normally aspirated but extensively modified. Equipped with triple 48mm Weber carburettors, ‘hotter’ cams, and high-compression pistons, this engine produced an estimated 250bhp – quite an improvement over the stock 178 horsepower. In its initial configuration the Hathaway SM ran 151.2mph (243,33km/h) at Bonneville in 1979 to set a new F/ALT class record, which was followed up in 1980 by a new F/GC class record of 148.7mph (239,31km/h). The next stage of development saw the Maserati V6 fitted with a Garrett AiResearch turbocharger giving 20psi boost, and in this guise the SM cracked the magic 200mph (321,86km/h) barrier in 1985, clocking a speed of 200.002mph with Jerry at the wheel. Two years later, in 1987, his wife Sylvia topped that with a speed of 202.31mph (325,58km/h), making the Hathaways only the third married couple to join the exclusive 200mph Club. Between them the Hathaways set the following records:
1979. Bonneville Land Speed Trial F/ALT 151.249mph – 243,411 km/h
1980. Bonneville Land Speed Trial F/ALT 148.773mph – 239,426 km/h
1981. El Mirage Racing Season D/GC 175.430mph – 282,327 km/h
1985. Bonneville Land Speed Trial D/GC 200.002mph – 321,872 km/h
1987. Bonneville Land Speed Trial D/GC 202.301mph – 325,581 km/h

Produced by Renault owned manufacturer Alpine at their Dieppe plant. Due to limited budget during development the car strongly resembles the earlier GTA, but it is a completely different car sharing only the windows with the GTA. The basic concept remains, rear engine, steel back bone chassis and lightweight body. The PRV engine remained but enlarged to 3.0 ltr (2975cc) with a Garrett AiResearch T3 Turbochargerform producing 250bhp and a maximum speed of 165mph. The A610 did not result in an improvement in sales over the commercially disappointing GTA and the car was discontinued in 1995, The A610 was to be the last car to carry the Alpine name until the 2017 release of the new Alpine A110. After production of the A610 ended, the Alpine factory in Dieppe produced the Renault Spider
