In the AIRS instrument's microwave imagery most clouds are relatively transparent in microwave. However, in this image of Hurricane Michael on Oct. 8 at 2:47 p.m. EDT (1847 UTC), the highest storms, located in the eyewall form almost a complete circle around the center. An eye wall is a ring of powerful storms around the open center of a hurricane.

Lufthansa final approach on rwy 07L at FRA on 2018-04-18

The Atmospheric Infrared Sounder or AIRS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Hurricane Michael just after it strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane and analyzed the storm in infrared light. Infrared light provides scientists with temperature data and that's important when trying to understand how strong storms can be. The higher the cloud tops, the colder and the stronger they are. So infrared light as that gathered by the AIRS instrument can identify the strongest sides of a tropical cyclone.

NASA's Aqua satellite flew over Michael on Oct. 8 at 2:47 p.m. EDT (1847 UTC). AIRS

detected strongest storms around the center and in a thick band of storms feeding into the center from the eastern quadrant. In those areas cloud top temperatures as cold as minus 63 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 53 degrees Celsius). Storms with cloud top temperatures that cold have the capability to produce heavy rainfall.

One of Lufthansa's early shorter range A321's.

Named: "Husum".

First flown with the Airbus test registration D-AVZX, this aircraft was delivered to Lufthansa as D-AIRS in Apr-96. It ferried to Shannon Ireland for winter storage in early Nov-16 and returned to service at the end of Jan-17.

The aircraft was withdrawn from service and stored at Berlin-Schoenfeld in mid Mar-20 as a consequence of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It was moved to Budapest, Hungary in late Jun-20 and eventually returned to service in early Aug-22.

Now almost 30 years old, it continues in service. Updated 04-Nov-25.

Two Instruments on NASA's Aqua Satellite Catch the Pesky Great Lakes Low

A low pressure area has been sitting over the Great Lakes region for about a week now, keeping the region and the U.S. northeast and Mid-Atlantic under cloud cover. NASA's Aqua satellite flew over head yesterday, Sept. 26, and captured two views of it from space.

That low pressure area continues to spin counter-clockwise today over the Great Lakes. Its centered over northern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin and is once again going to keep the region cloudy, cool and wet with showers.

When the Aqua satellite passed overhead Monday afternoon at 3:05 p.m. EDT (Sept. 26) a detailed, clear image was captured from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument (seen here: www.flickr.com/photos/gsfc/6188946512/in/photostream ) . The clouds from the low spread over Illinois, Wisconsin, parts of Iowa, northeastern Missouri, southeastern Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states.

A second visible image was captured by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument that also flies aboard NASA's Aqua satellite and showed the huge comma shape of the storm that spans the U.S. from its northern to southern borders.

According to the National Weather Service, the low will finally start moving to the east as an upper-atmospheric trough (an elongated area of low pressure) continues to strengthen and move into the upper Midwest. However, a ridge (elongated area) of high pressure will slow its move eastward, so it will be slow clearing this week in the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S.

Manchester Airport EGCC Runway 23L

The doors slid open. Cold air rushed in to meet them. The Doctor stepped outside, taking a long breath. "Come on, the airs...adequate". He cleared his throat. The air certainly wasn't great, but it was breathable, barely.

Jackie and Frank took their first steps, out onto an alien world. The Doctor started forward before - "Doctor stop!" Jackie yelled from behind. Lucky she'd done so as the Doctor was a mere footstep from peril. "Oooh, a transport platform" he said, before turning round. "Good eye, Jackie. That would explain why the Tardis said we were still moving".

A thump. "J...Jesus" gasped Frank, clinging to the Tardis. Unfortunately, Frank was terrified of heights. Always had been, always would be.

"You ok Frank?" Jackie asked. Frank nodded, trying a reassuring smile but ultimately, failing. Who knew Frank Douglas, burly security guard, was afraid of heights. To be honest, anyone would be scared in his position. Flying on an unenclosed surface with a hundred mile drop would scare even the bravest people.

"Doctor do you think we could..." Jackie started before trailing off. She had turned round with the intent to get the Doctor to land somewhere else. However, he was already preoccupied with what looked like a robot, stood in front of a control panel of some sort.

"Fascinating" he mused, examining the droid with his screwdriver. Not often you see a droid piloting a transport platform, especially not in this century. "Doctor do you really think that's a good idea." Jackie called out from behind. 'typical human, always worrying about something' he thought before reassuring her. "It's fine. It looks like an automated system, probably on autopilot."

Suddenly, the droid jerked to life, its eyes sparking. "Oh, hello. I'm the Doctor and these are..."

"DO YOU WISH TO ASSUME COMMAND?" The droid said in a monotone, mechanical voice. "Ummm, sure why not". As he'd told Jackie, it was on autopilot, what harm could 'assuming command' possibly do. Jackie shot him a look that practically screamed 'What the hell are you doing'.

As soon as he'd answered, the droid took a step back, allowing the Doctor to stand in front of the console. Jackie stepped towards him but he waved her off. "It's fine" he mouthed. The droid indicated to the Doctor to put his hands on the controls.

Satisfied, the Droid made its way towards the edge of the platform. and stepped of, similar to how a diver steps off a boat into the sea. "What the hell" exclaimed Frank, tentatively looking over the side of the platform. The droid had jumped off, folded into a ball, and was now headed towards the Sprawling base beneath them.

Out of nowhere, the platform lurched violently to the left, then the right. "Bloody hell" yelped Frank, as he was flung against an exhaust pipe. The platform began to fall. Jackie and the Doctor both clung to the Control console as the platform started dipping more to the right. Frank was now hanging almost vertically off the pipe. Jackie glanced behind her. "Doctor your bo..Tardis!" The Tardis was beginning to slide. "No no no no no" the Doctor shouted, trying in vain to use his foot to hold the Tardis in place. He glanced forward. The ground was rushing up to meet them, fast. They had already broken the thin cloud layer, and were now heading towards the base.

The Doctor had to make a decision: leap from the control console and grab hold of the Tardis or give up and save the platform. If he had been alone, it would have been an easy decision: Save the Tardis. But he had people with him. He couldn't just let them die. "No more deaths" he mumbled to himself as he grappled with the control panel. "I'm going to try to land us in that hangar looking thing down there" He yelled, indicating at a section of the base. "Hold on!"

DATELINE - Burlington, Ontario. Not all incidents of Santacide are carried out by humans, sometimes other creatures of the night must take the blame. Take for instance this ghastly Santa Killing early early Xmas morning. Investigator/Photographer KJ reported to me that the killer had beastly eyes. Judging from the forensic photos, it appears that a raccoon took down a porch based Santa with its claws. The sudden outrush of air lifted Santa into the air and then onto a nearby bush before he completely aired out. Raccoon real put the Nick in Ol' St Nick in Burlington
