Ingleborough (723 m or 2,372 ft) is the second-highest mountain in the Yorkshire Dales, England. It is one of the Yorkshire Three Peaks (the other two being Whernside and Pen-y-ghent), and is frequently climbed as part of the Three Peaks walk. A large part of Ingleborough is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and National Nature Reserve and is the home of a new joint project, Wild Ingleborough, with aims to improve the landscape for wildlife and people.

Drôle de coïncidende !
Il y a deux semaines, je photographiais mes premières Rhyssa persuasoria. En me renseignant sur elles, j'apprenais qu'elles parasitaient les larves du Sirex géant, Urocerus gigas. Je me disais que j'aimerais bien voir cette espèce un jour. Et ce week-end surprise ! Autour d'un gros tas de bois fraichement coupé, de nombreuses rhysses et... cette sirex en train de pondre !
C'est un gros hyménoptère, pouvant mesurer jusqu'à 40mm, qui fait partie des Symphytes (comme les tenthrèdes). On les appelle communément guêpe à scie. Les deux sexes sont dépourvus d'aiguillons venimeux et ne peuvent donc pas piquer. Mais la ressemblance avec un frelon est assez marquée lorsqu'on ne connait pas bien les insectes, ce qui peut lui porter chance... ou au contraire malheur...
La femelle pond dans le bois mourant de conifères, mais les troncs récemment abattus l'attirent également. Il arrive parfois que la larve continue son développement dans du bois destiné à faire des charpentes par exemple. L'adulte éclot alors dans la maison ! Mais pas d'inquiétude si cela vous arrive, les sirex ne pondent pas à nouveau dans ce genre de bois. Peut être pas assez nourrissant pour les larves, en tout cas pas intéressant ! Et en plus elles ne piquent pas, donc aucune excuse pour ne pas les faire sortir de la maison au lieu de les tuer ;)
Autre fait intéressant, lorsque la femelle pond dans le bois, elle inocule en même temps les spores de champignons du genre Stereum. En se développant, ces spores forment du mycélium indispensable au développement des larves.

L'armée de terre cuite (兵马俑, bīngmǎ yǒng, « figurines de guerriers et de chevaux enterrés avec les morts »), ou armée d'argile, est un ensemble de près de huit mille statues de soldats et chevaux en terre cuite, représentant les troupes de Qin Shi Huang, le 1er empereur de Chine. Elles représentent une forme d'art funéraire, car elles ont été enterrées dans les fosses du mausolée de l'empereur Qin, à proximité de la ville de Xi'an, dans le Shaanxi, en 210–209 av. J.-C. Cette « armée enterrée », dont les statues ont quasiment toutes un visage différent, était destinée à protéger l'empereur défunt.
Ces statues, qui datent de la fin du IIIe siècle av. J.-C., ont été découvertes en mars 1974 dans le xian de Xiyang par des agriculteurs. Leur taille varie suivant leur grade au sein de cette armée, celles figurant les généraux étant les plus grandes. Elles représentent des fantassins, des cavaliers, des chevaux et des chars. En 2007, les archéologues qui fouillent le site ont estimé que les trois fosses dans lesquelles repose l'armée de terre cuite contiennent plus de huit mille soldats, cent trente chars tirés par cinq cent vingt chevaux, auxquels il faut rajouter les cent cinquante chevaux montés par des cavaliers. La plus grande partie de ces statues est enterrée dans la fosse no 1, qui se situe à côté du mausolée de l'empereur Qin3. En plus des soldats, on trouve dans ces fosses des statues de civils, dont des membres de l'administration, des acrobates et des musiciens. Toutes les statues de terre cuite, c'est-à-dire plus de 8 000 soldats, ont été fabriquées à l'échelle 1/1, soit grandeur nature.

Afin de bien débuter l'hiver pour ma première sortie officiellement hivernale, je suis allé à la rencontre de quelques-uns de nos classiques petits passereaux d'hiver, particulièrement le Junco ardoisé, la Mésange Bicolore (visible à l'année celle-là mais elle est davantage disposée à se présenter devant nous lors des saisons froides) et le si joli et coopératif — comme il aime prendre la pose celui-là — Bruant hudsonien que je vous présente aujourd'hui.

A group of Chaffinch were feeding in an area of dappled evening sunlight at the edge of a wood. I got down on the ground to their level and aimed to isolate individuals for image making.
It was no easy task as they were constantly shuffling about or half obscured by vegetation....fun to try though!
This image goes some way towards what I was hoping to achieve. Plenty of 'mush' in the foreground and background gives it a kind of painterly feel. Best viewed large.
