Julie Ann (Landon) Huisman

May 31 1956 - July 23 2021

Ames - Julie Ann (Landon) Huisman, 65, of Ames, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021 at her home.

Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at First United Methodist Church, 516 Kellogg Ave., Ames, Iowa. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the church. All who knew and loved Julie are welcome and invited to attend. For those who are not able to travel, the service will be available to watch through a live stream on the Tribute Wall of Julie's obituary on the Adams Funeral Home website or www.fumcames.com.

Julie was the daughter of Keith and Ellen Landon, of Ames. She was born at Mary Greeley Medical Center on May 31, 1956. She grew up in Ames and graduated from Ames High School in 1974. Julie graduated from Iowa State University, where she completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Labor and Industrial Relations, a degree program she customized, and was a proud member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, serving as President twice. She went on to earn her Master of Science Degree in Adult Learning, Development and Performance from Drake University in 2008, and was very proud to have earned a 4.0 GPA while working full-time and raising her three kids. Julie also had a passion for continued growth and learning, and completed her International Coach Federation Certification in Business and Executive Coaching at The University of Texas at Dallas - School of Management in 2008.

Julie was a passionate person, but she felt most strongly about her beloved husband Tom. They were college sweethearts and dated for eight years before marrying in Ames at the United Church of Christ on April 3, 1982. Tom and Julie had a vibrant marriage for the 38 years they were blessed to share on this earth. Julie was broken-hearted to watch her husband's three-year cancer battle come to an end with his passing on July 26, 2020.

Julie's other great loves in her life were her three remarkable children, Kevin, Melissa and Karina. As she often told them, she loved her children to the moon and back, and everyone who knew her knew how incredibly proud she was to be their Mom.

Her first born and only son, Kevin Charles, held a soft spot in her heart. She was immensely proud of the man he has become and the devoted father he is to his daughter Bianca. Julie loved how highly regarded and beloved Kevin was in his career. She was grateful for the many ways he stepped into the role as the "man of the family" since Tom's passing in July of 2020. Julie also raved about his home-cooked meals and loved when he would fire up the grill for family dinners.

Melissa Kay, her second-born, was her bright and shining Mel Star. She saw so much of herself in her daughter, and championed her aspirations to follow in her mom's footsteps by starting a big, beautiful life in Texas at a young age. Julie loved Melissa's creativity and singing voice, and thought her writing was pretty special. She was proud of her daughter's "big brain" and her many professional and academic achievements. Most of all, Julie was in awe of Melissa's faith in God, strength of heart, and wisdom beyond her years.

The adoption of her baby girl Karina Ann from Novokuznetsk, Russia, was a highlight of her life, and Julie adored her youngest daughter. Julie was so proud of Karina's resilience and strength, and loved watching her "baby" become a mother on December 6, 2020 to Ellen Kathy-Marie, her second granddaughter. She counted it an incredible honor to help plan Karina and Mark's wedding on July 25, 2020, and was so grateful for the wonderful husband Karina found in Mark, and son-in-law she added to her family. Karina always knew how to make her mom laugh the hardest of anyone, and they shared many special silly moments.

Not to be forgotten, Julie considered her fur babies Coco Bear and the late Bandit Jo a part of the family and her very best friends.

Family was everything to Julie, and celebrations were plentiful among the Landon and Huisman families. From holidays, to birthdays and weekly pool parties, she cherished getting to live close to her extended family in Ames for the last years of her life.

Julie was whip-smart, incredibly interested in people, and highly ambitious, attributes she channeled into her successful 37-year career in Human Resources. She was very proud of her accomplishments in her professional life, as were all who knew her. Upon her graduation from Iowa State, Julie moved south to begin her career at Phillips Petroleum Company in Borger, Texas. She held numerous roles in HR with Phillips 66 in Borger, Texas, Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Stavanger, Norway, Caracas, Venezuela and Maracaibo, Venezuela. Julie was thrilled at the opportunity to work as an expatriate, immersed in global cultures, where she mastered the Norwegian and Spanish languages. Julie and Tom both retired from Phillips in 2000 and moved to Ames to be closer to their extended family.

Upon her return to Ames, Julie worked as the Human Resources Director for the Iowa State Foundation for two years. Her final career stop was at the City of Ames, where she served as the Human Resources Director for over 11 years. She was very proud to work at City Hall, in the same building as her late mother, Ellen Landon, who was a beloved Public Information Officer for the City of Ames for many years.

Julie retired from the City of Ames in 2015 to shift her focus and energy towards her family. She devoted her time in retirement to supporting her mother Ellen until her passing in 2019, and her husband Tom in his difficult cancer battle. She and Tom were looking forward to retiring in a beautiful home they built together in The Villages, Florida. Most recently, Julie was excited to transition into a new home in Ames with a pool area she named the Huisman Hibiscus Haven.

Volunteerism was an important aspect of Julie's life, and she loved to serve her community. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for 21 years, and served on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. Julie maintained a close connection to her beloved Alpha Delta Pi Sorority at Iowa State, serving both as the Chapter Advisor and the House Corps Board President for many years. Julie also served on the board at Youth and Shelter Services in Ames. She was proud to be a Rotarian in the Rotary Club of Ames, just like her late father, Keith Landon. Julie was affiliated with the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and had fond memories with many women in the organization.

Beyond her passions for her family and career, Julie had many hobbies and interests that fulfilled and enriched her life. At heart, she was an artist and creative soul. In her younger years, she was a talented pianist, seamstress, painter, and later in life, a prolific scrapbooker. Julie also had an eye for design, having originally started college as an Interior Design major. Though she never pursued a career in the field, she had a life-long passion for building, designing, and decorating her homes, all 13 of them!

Physical activity was important to Julie. She loved all water-related things: boating, skiing, swimming, and lake life. Every day was a new opportunity to achieve her goal of getting 10,000 steps. Julie loved to dance, and could often be seen embarrassing her kids with her latest dance moves.

Everyone who knew Julie could tell you about her impeccable style, and also her impeccable bargain shopping skills. During her working years, she could be seen in the most beautiful suits, but later in life she grew a sizable collection of leopard print items, which she called her "leopard-licious" clothing.

Julie was beloved by all who crossed her path. Whether long-time friend or stranger, she had a way of making people feel instantly known and loved. She would always remind her children to be two things with people: interesting, and interested. Julie was quick to ask a hundred questions, and was a lifelong interviewer. She cared deeply about the people in her life, and maintained a sizable social circle with friends across the globe. Julie and Tom prioritized social gatherings with dinner clubs, boating crews, and enjoyed hosting guests regularly at their lake houses.

Julie's life was guided by her rich Christian faith, and her personal relationship with Jesus. She loved to spend her mornings journaling, and documented all stages of her life in writing and reflection. Julie was passionate about the local church and serving God.

Left to cherish her memory are her three beloved children and their partners: Kevin Huisman of Ames, Iowa, Melissa Huisman of Austin, Texas and Karina and Mark Kendall of Fort Drum, New York. She had two beautiful granddaughters, Bianca Anne McConkey of Ogden, Iowa, and Ellen Kathy-Marie Kendall of Fort Drum, New York. Julie also leaves behind many members of her loving family –– her sister, Nancy Hemphill of Ames, Iowa; her nieces and their families: Becky, Aaron, Allison, and Jacob Rogers, of Ames, Iowa, and Katie, Nate, and Lincoln Molstad of Ankeny, Iowa; her mother-in-law, Joyce Huisman of Ames, Iowa; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Linda and Tom Thomas of Ames, Iowa, her brother-in-law and nephew, Ted and Nick Huisman of State Center, Iowa, and her sister-in-law and nephew, Laura and Grant Beckett of Everett, Washington.

Julie was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tom Huisman; her mother and father, Keith and Ellen Landon; her father-in-law Charles Huisman; and her brothers-in-law Monty Hemphill and Larry Beckett. We are sure she is thrilled to be reunited with them all.

Funeral arrangements are under the care of Adams Funeral Home of Ames. Online condolences may be left for Julie's family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Ames. The family would like to thank all who knew and loved Julie and the Huismans for their unending support and love for their mother and family.

-------- Obituary --------

Dennis (Denny) Wayne Sailsbury

1942-2021

Ames - Dennis (Denny) Wayne Sailsbury, age 78, passed away at his Ames, IA home on March 6, 2021 surrounded by his family. A gathering of friends and family will be 4-6:00 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way Ames, with a 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 12, graveside service at Ames Municipal Cemetery. Masks and social distancing are required at both events.

Dennis was born in Ames, Iowa on September 24, 1942. He was the oldest of four children of Dale and Martha Sailsbury. He was a graduate of Ames High School and resided in Ames his entire life.

Dennis married Betty Borg, of Forest City, IA, on October 3, 1964. He had a passion for photography and worked at the Ames Laboratory as a photographer for over 40 years. He carried his passion of photography into his family vacations and holiday celebrations. He was heavily involved with his children's (Hal, Eric, and Dan) activities. He rarely missed a practice or a game. He helped coached the sports teams they were involved in and was a cub scout leader for each of his three boys. He took many ski trips with his sons and grandchildren.

He was also devoted to his seven grandchildren (Chelsea, Alex, Jack, Roman, Calvin, Max, and Jonah). His grandkids had many overnights at grandpa and grandma's house as they loved how he allowed them to stay up late to watch movies, eat chips and salsa, and make malts with grandpa. The morning always greeted the kids with his famous pancakes, as he was the only one that knew how to make them the "right way".

He was a teacher at heart, as he loved teaching life skills to his kids and grandchildren on how to drive a boat, fish, camp, build wood working projects, and how to enjoy life.

Everyone knew Dennis as an avid RAGBRAI rider as he rode RAGBRAI for 27 years. After he decided not to ride anymore, he would provide support in transporting gear and setting up tents for his kids and grandkids when they would join the ride regularly.

Dennis was a staple in his involvement with Ames High School Football. During football season, for 40 years, you could find him on Friday nights volunteering his time at Ames High football games running the chains on the sidelines marking first downs. Because of his dedication and years of service, he received a distinguished service award from the Ames High School Athletic Department.

Dennis loved camping. He took his family on numerous camping trips over the years and spent many years with his sons and grandchildren on canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota.

In retirement, he worked part time at Reiman Gardens at Iowa State University as a jack of all trades. He spent many hours building displays, performing maintenance on equipment, and mentored many of the student workers.

He was a member of the Golden K Kiwanis.

Dennis never turned down an opportunity to try something new, because he was always a kid at heart.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Betty; son Hal (Dana) and their three children, Chelsea Bright (Isaac and great-grandchild due May 27, 2021), Alex (fiancé Kiki Kramer), and Jack; son Eric (Margene) and their son Roman (fiancé Morgan Warbalow); son Dan (Megan) and their three sons Calvin, Max, and Jonah; his siblings Marilyn Smith of Jackson, MO, Paul of Ames, IA, and Glen of Dysart, IA. His parents, Dale and Martha, preceded Dennis's passing.

Julie was so proud of Karina’s resilience and strength, and loved watching her “baby” become a mother on December 6, 2020 to Ellen Kathy-Marie, her second granddaughter. She counted it an incredible honor to help plan Karina and Mark’s wedding on July 25, 2020, and was so grateful for the wonderful husband Karina found in Mark, and son-in-law she added to her family.

Volunteerism was an important aspect of Julie’s life, and she loved to serve her community.

During her working years, she could be seen in the most beautiful suits, but later in life she grew a sizable collection of leopard print items, which she called her “leopard-licious” clothing.

Julie’s life was guided by her rich Christian faith, and her personal relationship with Jesus.

Online condolences may be left for Julie’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Ames. The family would like to thank all who knew and loved Julie and the Huismans for their unending support and love for their mother and family.

STORY CITY

published on November 11, 2004

"It's not the length of time but the depth of life." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ann Marie Peterson passed away peacefully in her sleep at Israel Hospice House of Ames on November 9, 2004. Ann showed great strength of character as she bravely fought her brief battle with cancer. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, November 12 at St. Petri Lutheran Church, 804 Grand Avenue in Story City.

Ann was born October 24, 1956 in Madison, WI to Dr. H.L. and Martha Self. She graduated from Ames High School in 1974 and attended Iowa State University. Ann and Greg Peterson were married on September 24, 1982 and together, they had two children, Megan (19) and Cole (10). She was employed at Mary Greely Medical Rehab and Wellness in Story City.

Ann's family was her greatest joy. She and Greg were their children's biggest fans at their sporting events; together, they encouraged their children's participation and success in all their endeavors. Ann found happiness in making her home beautiful and a comfortable place for her family and friends. She enjoyed golfing with her husband, reading and watching Oprah. She especially loved red roses, burning scented candles, her husband's cooking and anything chocolate. Ann held a special place in her heart for her kitties (except Missy). She will forever be a member in good standing of the FTA Group. Ann was funny, bossy and she knew-and said-what she wanted. For these reasons and more, we love her.

Ann is survived and lovingly remembered by countless friends and family including her husband, Greg; her two children, Megan and Cole; her mother, Martha Self of Ames; a sister, Linda (Jerry) Lindell of Arlington, TX; two nieces, Michelle (Randy) Thomas and Stacy (Daniel) Jones; a brother, Mike (Barb) Self of Martinsville, VI; and four nephews, Steven and John Self and Travis and Jared Parker. She is also survived by Greg's family, Ken and Joann Peterson and Steve, Mary, Sayer, Sam and Spencer Peterson, all of Story City; and Jeff, Jackie, Barrett, and Cameron Peterson, all of Bondurant.

Ann was preceded in death by her father, Dr. H.L. Self of Hico, TX, and a sister, Debra Parker.

Memorials may be sent to Bliss Cancer Center or the Israel Hospice House.

Julie Landon Obituary

May 31, 1956 - July 23, 2021

Julie Ann (Landon) Huisman, 65, of Ames, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021 at her home.

For those who are not able to travel, the service will be available to watch through a live stream on the Tribute Wall of Julie’s obituary on the Adams Funeral Home website or www.fumcames.org.

Julie was broken-hearted to watch her husband’s three-year cancer battle come to an end with his passing on July 26, 2020.

Julie’s other great loves in her life were her three remarkable children, Kevin, Melissa and Karina.

She was grateful for the many ways he stepped into the role as the “man of the family” since Tom’s passing in July of 2020. Julie also raved about his home-cooked meals and loved when he would fire up the grill for family dinners.

Melissa Kay, her second-born, was her bright and shining Mel Star. She saw so much of herself in her daughter, and championed her aspirations to follow in her mom’s footsteps by starting a big, beautiful life in Texas at a young age. Julie loved Melissa’s creativity and singing voice, and thought her writing was pretty special. She was proud of her daughter’s “big brain” and her many professional and academic achievements. Most of all, Julie was in awe of Melissa’s faith in God, strength of heart, and wisdom beyond her years.

The adoption of her baby girl Karina Ann from Novokuznetsk, Russia, was a highlight of her life, and Julie adored her youngest daughter. Julie was so proud of Karina’s resilience and strength, and loved watching her “baby” become a mother on December 6, 2020 to Ellen Kathy-Marie, her second granddaughter. Obituary

Obituary from Omega Funeral & Cremation Service, Portland, Oregon:

John Pantenburg of Portland died the afternoon of August 3, 2015 due to complications of lung cancer. He was 59.

Born in Ames, Iowa on October 12, 1955, John was the youngest son of Richard and Dorothy and was raised by his mother and loving step-father, Frank. He graduated from Ames High in 1974 where he formed many lifelong friendships, reuniting with many of these friends just last October at an impromptu class reunion.

In his 20's, John moved to Colorado where he worked as a salesman. A natural people-person, John's amiable personality put those around him at ease, customers and new friends alike. In the mid 1990s, John followed his work to Portland, Oregon.

Here, he explored his new city on his beloved bicycle, making friends along the way. John met some of his closest friends, though, during his time at Mattress World. These close-knit coworkers, including Andy Layne and many others, quickly became a second family to him. They supported each other through life's challenges and enjoyed the good times together, even attending a baseball game in Seattle earlier this year.

An avid sports fan, John loved the Chicago Bears, Kansas City Royals, and—after many years in the Pacific Northwest—even the Mariners. His favorite athletes, however, were his great niece Kristin and great nephew, Kellen. For as long as he was able, John was a fixture at the kids' futsal, soccer, basketball, baseball, and softball games. Always encouraging, after each game he asked, have fun? This simple gesture embodied John's easy-going nature and love for his family.

John will be lovingly missed by his mother, Dorothy Ward of Ames, Iowa; his brothers James (Kathy) of Ames, Iowa and Thomas (Kathie) of Littleton, Colorado; his nieces Danelle (Aaron) Isenhart of Beaverton, Oregon and Leah (Marc) McClure of Colorado Springs, Colorado; his nephew Brett (Samantha) Pantenburg of Woodbury, Minnesota; and five great-grand nieces and nephews: Kristin and Kellen Isenhart, Anthony and Christian McClure, and Caitlynn Pantenburg.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Pantenburg and step-father Ora Frank Ward.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a gift to Providence Hospice, who took wonderful care of John in his final days. Per John's request, there will be no formal memorial service, though friends are invited to celebrate John's life in ways meaningful to them.

--- Mark Dekovic Obituary

Mark Dekovic passed away August 3, 2023 and it has left a hole in my heart. I have known Mark since Junior High School growing up in Ames, IA. He was a wonderful friend and classmate and we will all miss him so much.

---

Mark C. Dekovic (Deke) Obituary

Age 67, of Crystal, Minnesota, passed away August 3, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Mark was born on May 31, 1956 in Chicago, IL, to Charles and Elaine Dekovic.

Most of Mark's childhood was spent trying to grow up in Ames, IA (some would say he never did). He attended Ames High School where he fell in love with the arts, especially theater and music. Mark reveled in the stage and performing, which he carried on throughout his life. Following high school, Mark went to work for Aunt Maude's restaurant in Ames where he developed his cooking skills that would later spare his wife from her own bland hot dishes and cans of SpaghettiOs. He continued his education at Iowa State University, pursuing his love of theater through countless performances in Stars Over VEISHA, Union Board Theater, and Memorial Union Resident Summer Theater (MURST). He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design in 1983.

After moving to Minneapolis in 1983, Mark enjoyed sharing his talents with the Minnesota Shakespeare Company and cooking at various restaurants around the city before starting at McKesson Corporation where he began his 30-year career working most recently as an E-commerce Web Designer. He exited stage left into retirement in September 2022 (because who doesn't love doing web design?). The overall enjoyment-quotient at McKesson dropped 75% when he retired as he was the go-to guy for fun at many company functions, hosting and entertaining during trade shows, United Way functions, banquets, and other events. When Mark walked into the room, everyone noticed!

In 1999, Mark married his co-star, Sue Johnson, who came with an award-worthy supporting cast of Kiernan and Karlyn. He brought his authentic zest for life and his passion for fun into their lives, for which they will be forever grateful. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. His many hobbies included being an avid photographer, playing his collection of guitars, woodworking, the Chicago Bears, and spending time with family. He will be remembered for his hilarious sense of humor and his gentle kindness.

Mark is survived by his wife of 24 years, Sue; stepson Kiernan Johnson and stepdaughter Karlyn (David) Mlostek, one granddaughter Reagan Mlostek; his mother Elaine Dekovic, Ames, IA; siblings; Charles (Sara), Queens Creek, AZ; Jay (Dalila), Tabernash, CO; Lauren (Martin) Fenimore, Des Moines, IA; Julie Dekovic (Donald Duhon), Spring, TX; Elizabeth Catanesi (Deborah Walton), Nipomo, CA; 8 nephews, 3 grand-nieces, 4 grand-nephews and countless other family and friends. Preceded in death by his father, Charles W. Dekovic, Jr.

Many thanks to the nurses and doctors at Methodist Hospital and the Health Partners Frauenshuh Cancer Center for their compassion and humor. You truly are Heroes!

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 16th, 2023, at 3125 Virginia, Ave. North, Crystal, MN, from 1-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation at the following link: curecca.link/MarkDekovic

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances;

And one man in his time plays many parts..."

Julie Landon Obituary

Julie Huisman Obituary

ROW 3, L TO R: Frank Judisch (IA), John (Jack) Steil (CA), Leverne Seversike (IA), Robert McCardle (SC), Dennis Rust (TX), Barron (Barry) Gulliver (MI), George McJimsey (IA), Donald Sprague (IA), Larry Larson (IA), David Everds (MN), Lawrence Kelley (CA), Michael Knuths (TX), Bruce Griffith (AR)

ATTENDED A FRIDAY EVENT: Jack Compton (IA), Joan Finch Bennett (TX), Jan Piper Jaqua (IA) Note: State of residence follows name in ( )

Ames' blustery weekend of Oct. 9-11, 2009 saw 41 members of the Class of '54 (and numerous spouses) marking 55 years since graduation. Kick-off was a catered BBQ picnic at Inis Grove Park, where attendees from 13 states picked up their information packets and put their cameras to work. About 20 attended the Hall of Fame game, and a few even braved the cold for all four quarters.

Duane Green, driver par excellence, procured a bus for the 19 who went to Boone for a scenic ride through the Des Moines River valley on the steam-locomotive train Saturday morning. That evening, we gathered at the Gateway Hotel for a buffet banquet and an AV presentation prepared by Barb McLaughlin Marr chronicling our Ames school years from elementary through graduation. Conversation, much laughter, and many more pictures filled the remaining hours.

A Sunday buffet breakfast wound down the weekend. Jan Blair Wilson and Mary Hosmer Shahan arranged for all the delicious meals and the autumn decorations. Keith Covey, class president, served as general chair, Frank Judisch was treasurer, and Jeanne Cooke Collins took care of all communications.

We're considering a gathering in the spring of 2012, perhaps in the southeastern U'S., because our ranks grow thinner and our memory book grows thicker. The reunion could be part of a great vacation, or even be the vacation, because we'd pick an interesting location with choices of things to see and do. Willing to help? Have ideas? Notify Keith Covey at or Jeanne Collins.

Dear 1954 Ames High School Classmates,

It was great to see all of you at our 60th AHS class reunion from September 12-14 2014 ! We hope you enjoyed it as much as the committee did. We were especially gratified by the turnout at all three events and the informal socializing that went on after each one and between times.

This is a group photo of those who attended our Saturday evening dinner at the 1954 Ames High School Reunion event. Special thanks to Karel Hedrick, Paul Lunde and Bonnie McFarland for sending 10 shots. This is the best of the set, all things considered. Unfortunately, a couple faces are partially obscured. But it's the memory that counts, right?

We sincerely hope to see all of you at the next one! Keith Covey, 1954 Ames High School Alum

Julie Ann Huisman Obituary

May 31, 1956 - July 23, 2021

--- Obituary ---

Julie Ann (Landon) Huisman, 65, of Ames, passed away on Friday, July 23, 2021 at her home.

For those who are not able to travel, the service will be available to watch through a live stream on the Tribute Wall of Julie’s obituary on the Adams Funeral Home website or www.fumcames.org.

Julie was broken-hearted to watch her husband’s three-year cancer battle come to an end with his passing on July 26, 2020.

Julie’s other great loves in her life were her three remarkable children, Kevin, Melissa and Karina.

She counted it an incredible honor to help plan Karina and Mark’s wedding on July 25, 2020, and was so grateful for the wonderful husband Karina found in Mark, and son-in-law she added to her family.

Volunteerism was an important aspect of Julie’s life, and she loved to serve her community.

During her working years, she could be seen in the most beautiful suits, but later in life she grew a sizable collection of leopard print items, which she called her “leopard-licious” clothing.

Julie’s life was guided by her rich Christian faith, and her personal relationship with Jesus.

Online condolences may be left for Julie’s family at www.adamssoderstrum.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church of Ames. The family would like to thank all who knew and loved Julie and the Huismans for their unending support and love for their mother and family.

Summary of the Ames High School 1973 football season

Even though the Ames High football team lost three of their first four games, Coach Phil Johnson felt that the little Cyclones had the potential to win them all. “The seniors just didn’t have enough game experience early in the season,” he said.

by the time the team got their stuff together the season looked quite grim. The Little Cyclones dropped a thrilling Homecoming decision to Fort Dodge and were trailing Central Waterloo at halftime. Somebody did an excellent motivational job because the team came out of the locker and ran Central off the field.

A week later the squad traveled to Cedar Falls to play the number four ranked Tigers. The Little Cyclones dominated the game with a stiff defensive effort while capitalizing on Cedar Falls’ mistakes. After rolling past Waterloo West and Ottawa the gridders wound up the season on a bitterly cold night in Marshalltown. The game went down to the wire as the Little Cyclones held on to a one point victory and a share of second place in the Conference.

Considering the first half of the season, the team did a remarkable job of bouncing back. “The improvement over such a short time was tremendous,” commented Coach Johnson. “The winning streak is a great tribute to their achievements.” Johnson added that this team was the most enjoyable team that he had coached.

ANN MARIE (SELF) PETERSON Obituary

Ann Self Obituary

Ann Peterson Obituary

October 24, 1956 - November 9, 2004

STORY CITY

published on November 11, 2004

Why one should attend your reunion?

"At this stage in life, it’s fascinating to reconnect with each and every individual, learning what they have chosen to do with their life, revisiting with them the ups and downs we all face, learning from their experiences in ways never imagined. That we all share a common experience having gone to school in Ames gives us each a connection into a relaxed conversation without pretense, letting us focus less on the past and more on what are our own life experiences. Yes there is nostalgia in any gathering like this, but in contrast to prior reunions, I felt that coming together this summer after 20 years was really about us as adults, not who we were as teenagers." - Rodney Harl 1989 Ames High School Alum.

"There is truly something special about the relationships that are developed during our high school years. The way that we can come together, often after many years have passed, and reconnect completely in only a moment ...Of course I believe the AHS Class of '89 may be unique in how close we became ... or maybe it is unique to all of AHS. Either way it is pretty special and I wouldn't miss the opportunity to get back together for the world!" - Tyler Farner 1989 AHS Alum

Ames High School Class of 1976 40-Year Reunion was held Friday and Saturday July 15-16, 2016 in Ames Iowa

AHS 1976 40th reunion info

Welcome back Class of 1976 Ames Senior High School. Saturday evening dinner event July 16, 2016 at the Memorial Union Iowa State University campus Ames, Iowa.

Ames High School class of 1976 40-year post reunion summary

The 40th reunion was amazing!! Almost 100 of our classmates met on Friday July 15 at Elks Lodge downtown Ames Iowa, which was a nice venue, it provided lots of room and great backgrounds for photos and lots and lots of re-connecting and conversation with friends and classmates. The Friday evening reunion photos are here: Fri eve

Saturday, July 16 we all toured the High School then met again at the Memorial Union for group photos out on the steps and more photos and dinner in the Sun Room and another wonderfully enchanted evening of re-connecting with old friends. It was so much fun to see classmates we had not seen for so long, in some cases not since AHS days 40 years ago. We all have journeyed 40 years to get to this spot in time. It is something ever so special to have friends that span most, if not all of your life, especially after 40 plus years. Saturday evening 40th reunion photos are here: Sat eve

In 1986 she joined the Memphis Symphony Orchestra in Memphis, Tennessee, where she was the first chair of the second violins. She played with the symphony until her retirement in 2009. She was a kind and gentle soul, who, in addition to music, loved animals of any kind, especially cats. Unfortunately, after her retirement, her health declined steadily, and she died in Memphis in 2021.

1960 55th Class post reunion summary

Congratulations to the class of 1960 !! From $0 to $10,000+ in 45 Days by Dallas (Wall) Rust, Class of 1960

It started with a conversation a few days before our 55th Ames High Class of 1960 Reunion. Meeting places had been reserved, hotel rooms booked, food ordered, invitations sent, reservations and money collected. It was time to sit back and relax until the Reunion and then … The words uttered were, “Hey, Dallas, has our class ever given back to the school as a class?” I responded with my own question, “You mean as in money?” And so it began... No, the Class of 1960 had never donated any money other than giving the Alumni Association a smattering of left-over money from past reunions. Our class was always delighted if/when we found that we might have enough money left over after a reunion to apply toward stamps for the next reunion. We have had a reunion every 5 years since we graduated. Our goal (other than to have a fantastic time reminiscing and re-connecting with classmates) was to keep expenses down and not charge anything more than absolutely necessary. Therefore, there never was any extra We started talking about the fact that Ames High shaped so many of our lives and provided us with an invaluable education. It seemed strange that we hadn’t thought of giving as a class before. The classmate then stunned me by saying, “I’d be willing to match up to $5,000 donated to the Ames Education Foundation.

WOW!! This was an opportunity that couldn’t be wasted. I quickly met with Annie Arbuckle of the Ames Education Foundation to find out how we could orchestrate this since there were just 3 days left before the Reunion. She made it very easy.

After announcing the challenge at the Reunion and sending emails to our class email list, the money started arriving. Some classmates gave $20, some $25, some $30, some $40, some $50, some $100, some $250, some $300, and some $500. Slowly it started adding up. Each week I sent an update to the class on how much money we had received and coupled it with the donated amount. When we got to the $6,000 mark I was very proud; at $7,000 I was very happy; at $8,000 I was giddy; at $9,000 I was amazed. Then when we were close to the $10,000 challenge, I started getting worried. Could we really get to $10,000? I had already received the $5,000 check from our classmate. Could we really match his $5,000?? In the mail the “final day of giving”, there were checks enough to put us over our challenge. I was ecstatic! We raised a total $10,560.

Reunions are a time to reflect on occurances and people that were important to us at a time in our lives when we are growing, maturing, and learning life lessons. Ames High School had a huge influence on the people in my class. The physical building, the teachers, the classmates, the curriculum—all meshed together into an exciting experience that provided us with the background to be whatever it was we were to become. What better way to give back to that institution which did so much to shape our lives than to contribute to the Ames Education Yes, $0 to $10,000+ seems extraordinary, but it was easy because Ames Hi Aims High!

Letter to the 1960 AHS Class about and before the 55th Class Reunion

Hello AHS Class of 1960

Time for celebration! We have actually achieved getting to the amazing benchmark of our 55th Ames High School Reunion. Where have all the years gone? Come, mix, mingle, talk, and find out what has happened in people's lives. It's pretty darn interesting!!! And on top of it all, enjoy the drinks, food, and ambiance of the delightful Gateway Hotel and Conference Center. (Reservations: 1-800-FOR-AMES)

On Thursday evening, August 6th, classmates will gather at the Olde Main Brewing Company on Main Street for sandwiches and drinks and talk, talk, talk.

On Friday evening August 7th, the first "planned" event will start at 5:00 PM at the Gateway Hotel and Conference Center. There will be appetizers available to fill your tummy while you get what you want from the cash bar. If you want to hang out in the meeting room all evening, that’s fine. If you’re still hungry after appetizers, you can get with fellow classmates and have dinner at one of Ames’s many fine restaurants. We are trying to plan a Saturday morning meeting at the Ames Historical Society and a tour of the "history" floor of the Octagon, both in downtown Ames. The newly renovated library is in the same area and is a must- see! Remember the Story Time Theater? It's still there!

The banquet will be Saturday August 8, 2015 in the evening at the Gateway, again. Cash bar will open at 5:00 PM, dinner will be served at 6:00 PM. Rather than a formal program, many classmates wanted a chance to share stories, ask each other questions, and play the "remember when" game.

Sunday August 9, 2015 in the morning will be informal breakfasts at different places in Ames, since most motel/hotels in Ames have free breakfasts with rooms.

Thursday evening at Olde Main Brewery ________yes _______no -- no charge

Friday evening at Gateway Hotel _________yes _______no -- $20 per person

Saturday evening at Gateway Hotel ________yes ________no -- $45 per person

History of Central Jr High: This was the last 6th grade class to ever attend Central. There were 4 6th grade classes total that year and they were all on the 2nd floor of the old original East Central building. East Central Building was originally built to house Ames High School until they built the West Central building and the high school moved across the street, then eventually another new AHS was built which is on Ames High Drive. The East building was torn down decades ago.

Welcome back Class of 1977 Ames Senior High School !!

Ames High School class of 1977 40-year post reunion summary

The 40th reunion was amazing!! The class of 1977 always has one of the strongest most connected classes out of all the Alumni classes at AHS, and this was no exception as approximately 100 1977 classmates met and re-connected on Friday Sep 22 2017 at Buford's Restaurant in the Quality Inn.

Saturday, September 23 we all toured the High School then 110+ classmates met again later that day at the Quality Inn for a banquet, group photos, a short program and then another wonderfully enchanted evening of re-connecting with old friends. It was so much fun to see classmates we had not seen for so long, in some cases not since AHS days 40 years ago. We all have journeyed 40 years to get to this spot in time. It is something ever so special to have friends that span most, if not all of your life, especially after 40 plus years. Saturday evening 40th reunion photos are here: Sat eve Sunday was an awesome picnic at Brookside Park with another fun group photo, then we shed a tear and said our goodbyes and we hope to see you again soon.
