I got a tip from one of my bay area contacts about a trail at Point Reyes that was particularly good for wildlife.

Since it was a holiday weekend, I made sure to arrive very early at the trail-head.

The first part of the trail was beautiful and covered some great terrain and I saw plenty of spoor to indicate Bobcat and Coyote had been here recently.

After a few miles I decided to cross over to the adjacent pastureland.

There was a small heard of cows on a ridge. Suddenly I noticed commotion among the cows and looked up to see a cow running from the heard.

It took a second to realize that it was actually chasing something.

I grabbed my binoculars to get a closer look and saw that it was chasing off a Coyote!

Quickly I moved closer and was able to put the ridge line between myself and the Coyote.

There was some brush near the top of the ridge and I used this for cover to approach within about 75 feet.

By this time the cow had re-joined the heard and the Coyote was wandering along sniffing around and such.

I was able to get several shots. The Coyote even lay down for a few minutes. Eventually the ultra-aware Coyote noticed me and got up and trotted down the hill, out of range.

A very nice encounter indeed.

This is about a 50% crop.

St Pierre is a former parish and hamlet in Monmouthshire, south east Wales, 3 miles (4.8 km) south west of Chepstow and adjacent to the Severn Estuary. It is now the site of a large golf and country club, the Marriott St Pierre Hotel & Country Club, which was previously a large manor house and deer park belonging to the Lewis family.

The manor of St Pierre was originally part of the parish of Runston, now a deserted village whose only standing remains are Runston Chapel, and was later amalgamated for civil purposes with the neighbouring parish of Mathern. It is uncertain whether the name originates from a Welsh family, Pŷr, or is of Norman origin.

Around 1380, St Pierre was owned by Sir David ap Philip, who served under King Henry V in France, and the name of his son, Lewis, was later adopted by his family and descendants as their surname. The estate continued in the ownership of the Lewis family until 1924, although they had moved out of the mansion to the neighbouring Moynes Court in the late 19th century. The last member of the family to own the estate was Air Commodore Freke William Wiseman-Clark, who died without issue in 1908. Thomas Lewis, Esq., married the daughter of Sir Richard Levett, Lord Mayor of London, and other Lewis family members also made propitious marriages. Several members of the family became High Sheriffs of Monmouthshire. Others became Members of Parliament, including Thomas Lewis who was MP for Monmouth, Newport and Usk between 1713 and 1752. His family took over and developed the "New Passage" ferry service across the Severn from Black Rock, in competition with the "Old Passage" service run from Beachley by the Duke of Beaufort. In 1925, the mansion and deer park were sold to Daniel Lysaght.

The former manor house includes an important 16th-century gatehouse which is a Grade II* listed building, but the remainder of the building was largely built in the 19th century. Major extensions have been added since the house became a hotel in the 1960s. It was bought by Tintern Abbey Hotels in 1961, and a golf course (now "the Old Course") was opened in 1962 with a second course in 1975.

Stewartdale is adjacent to a large nature reserve owned and managed by Ipswich City Council, and the management of both these properties adds significantly to the ecological values of the area. A detailed management plan exists for the property, and CWM Qld are responsible for the pest species management component of this plan.

The property is highly biodiverse, containing three threatened ecosystems (2 Endangered & one of Concern) and several rare and threatened species. The terrain is rough and steep, and the ecosystems highly varied both in structure and diversity, creating an interesting if challenging location for CWM Qld members to work.

Management of this property is complex. Several interest groups, including S.S.A.A., use this property for a number of activities, and they are balanced with the ecological management requirements, in particular where rare and threatened species and ecosystems occur. Interest groups include Birds Australia, who conducts regular monthly surveys of Bundamba Wetlands, and Landcare Australia, who have implemented programs for regeneration of the wetlands edges.

Adjacent to the "Südstadt" of Karlsruhe's city center, the "Stadtpark Südost" (Southeast City Park) was created as part of a new urban district. A dense urban district was developed on the former Deutsche Bahn repair shop between 2002 and 2016. Parallel to this, the 9.5-hectare Stadtpark (City Park) was created, which, with its diverse recreational offerings, represents an important local recreation area for the new residents as well as for visitors from the neighboring inner-city districts. A striking feature in spring is the avenue of double-flowering wild cherry trees on the so-called Esplanade, a promenade elevated opposite the park. It lies partly on an embankment and partly on the concrete pylons pictured here.

Changing light on Morecambe Bay

This one was taken after I processed the adjacent image. I'd cropped the first down from the way I'd composed it in camera, then took my tripod down and walked away. Then the light changed creating a different emphasis on the sand patterns so I went back to set up this shot. OK, the tripod was at minimum height so that didn't change, and it is stood on a window ledge so not a great deal of movement there. But considering it was a different focal length (175 v 160mm) and I had panned the tripod head between shots I'm surprised how similar the two compositions are.

The mountain bluebird (Sialia currucoides)

It breeds in central provinces of Canada and adjacent states of the northern United States. It is a migratory bird, wintering in Argentina, the Caribbean, Chile, and Peru.

The summer adult's body is white and its back and wings are much darker grey than all other gulls of similar size except the larger laughing gull. The wings have black tips with an adjacent white band. The bill and legs are red. The black hood of the breeding adult is mostly lost in winter.

Young birds are similar to the adult but have less developed hoods and lack the white wing band. They take three years to reach maturity

Although the bird is uncommon on the coasts of North America, it occurs as a rare vagrant to northwest Europe, south and west Africa, Australia and Japan, with a single record from Eilat, Israel, in 2011 (Smith 2011), and a single record from Larnaca, Cyprus, July 2006.At the beginning of 2017 has been observed also in Southern Romania, southeast Europe.[5]

March Point. Padilla Bay/Fidalgo Bay.

"Hosting one of the largest Great Blue Heron colonies in Western North America, this island of forest sits between Padilla and Fidalgo Bays. Vera and Bud Kinney donated this property to Skagit Land Trust in 1994 to protect the nesting herons. With the cooperation of neighboring landowners, each year, Skagit Land Trust conducts a nest count in the heronry. 680 heron nests were counted in 2019 in this relatively small area, which provides easy access to feeding grounds for the herons. Unfortunately, the Trust does not have access to all neighboring property, and therefore some heron nests are uncounted. The overall trend, however, shows increasing number of heron nests in the colony on SLT property and the property to which we have access -- and there are likely to be hundreds more nests on the adjacent property to which we do not have access." While I was in Kauai I made two trips to Kilauea Lighthouse. First trip was to get a feel for the spot and determine where to set up because I knew I didn't get that action shot I wanted, plus the light was very harsh. Second visit had nice overcast light and the action was non stop with Red Footed Boobies diving in like Kamikazes gathering sticks adjacent to the path to the lighthouse. I wish I had a 24mm at times because they would take off towards your head with that massive wingspan. They definitely kept your head on a swivel and you had to just focus on one. This was a great time to see them carry away the sticks back to their nest. Click for large view.

This magnificent Grade I-listed church is adjacent to Port Eliot House in St Germans in south-east Cornwall and is unlike any other in the county. On the site of an earlier Saxon cathedral and subsequent priory, it was rebuilt in the 12th century by the canons in the Norman style. There is a magnificent Norman west door, and most of the Norman west front remains. The two towers are extremely rare in England, and were started in the early 13th century during the transitional period from Norman to Gothic. The north tower has an octagonal top in the Early English style on a square Norman base while the south tower has two 15th century stages added. Simon Jenkins regards this as one of England's Thousand Best Churches.

He also regards the East Window as one of the church's treasures. This is a Burne-Jones masterpiece, a ten light composition in his most mature style. "The background is a soft green-yellow, leaving figures in red and blue to glow even more vividly in the half-light," writes Jenkins.

[This] 1980 sculpture by Alan Chung Hung [1946–1994], located adjacent to the Vancouver Maritime Museum in Vanier Park in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[1] The 4.6-metre (15 ft) sculpture of a square, cut and twisted "like a paper clip" to form an arch, is composed of weathered Corten steel that rusts to provide a protective layer. The work was installed in 1980 to commemorate the arrival of Captain George Vancouver in Burrard Inlet [...].

The work, sited on a plaza of paving stones that measures 7.9 metres (26 ft) x 8.5 metres (28 ft), frames views of English Bay, the North Shore Mountains and the city.[...]. According to Chung Hung [who was born in Canton, China, moved to Vancouver in 1969, and studied at the Vancouver School of Art]: "The objective of the sculpture is to create a symbolic image with definite visual expression, awakening an awareness in Captain George Vancouver's contribution to the world, his remarkable and meticulous surveys which included the north Pacific coast." Tomochichi (to-mo-chi-chi') (c. 1644 – October 5, 1741) was the head chief of a Yamacraw town on the site of present-day Savannah, Georgia, in the 18th century. He gave land on Yamacraw Bluff to James Oglethorpe to build the city of Savannah. He remains a prominent historical figure of early Georgia history. As the principal mediator between the native population and the new British settlers during the first years of settlement, he contributed much to the establishment of peaceful relations between the two groups and to the ultimate success of Georgia.

Locomotive History

31237 had been built as D5664 at Loughborough, entering traffic in November 1960 and is one of a batch of sixteen locomotives (D5655 – D5670) which entered service with the Mirrlees engine uprated from 1365bhp to 1600bhp following the trial with D5545. This effectively made them a Type 3 locomotive but they were never classified as such. They were allocated to March MPD for accelerated Liverpool Street – Kings Lynn duties. However by 1962 this engine started to develop major problems and the up-rated engines were quickly de-rated to 1250bhp. The final solution adopted was to re-engine the class and in October 1966 D5665 was released from Doncaster works following classified repair during which its unreliable Mirrlees engine was replaced by a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine. It would survive in traffic until June 2000 and was eventually broken up by TJ Thomson, Stockton during September 2004.

This was the fourth National Park I went to on my trip. My next upload will show one of the arches in the park for which it is famous.

Arches National Park is a US National Park in eastern Utah. The park is adjacent to the Colorado River, 4 miles (6 km) north of Moab, Utah. It is home to over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, including the world-famous Delicate Arch, in addition to a variety of unique geological resources and formations. It contains the highest density of natural arches in the world.

The park consists of 76,679 acres (119.811 sq mi; 31,031 ha; 310.31 km2) of high desert located in the Colorado Plateau. Its highest elevation is 5,653 feet (1,723 m) at Elephant Butte, and its lowest elevation is 4,085 feet (1,245 m) at the visitor center. Forty-three arches are known to have collapsed since 1977. The park receives on average 10 inches (250 mm) of rain a year.

Administered by the National Park Service, the area was originally named a National Monument on April 12, 1929. It was redesignated as a National Park on November 12, 1971.

Adjacent to the main museum building is a reconstruction of the 1870s-era Central Pacific Railroad passenger station and freight depot on Front Street, which houses historic and contemporary railroad equipment. In early 2011, the interior remained closed to public use, but is occasionally open for special events. Between April and October, the Sacramento Southern Railroad, operated by the museum, takes passengers on a 40-minute, 6-mile (9.7 km) roundtrip route along the Sacramento River on a portion of the Walnut Grove branch of the former Southern Pacific Railroad. The Sacramento Southern Railroad owns the Walnut Grove Branch right-of-way that extends south from Sacramento along the eastern bank of the Sacramento River. A few miles of track were rebuilt along the levee near Freeport, California as part of a US Army Corps of Engineers project. The CSRRM hopes to one day have a longer excursion line, perhaps as far as Hood, California.[citation needed] At that location the railroad passengers could disembark the train and take a tourist steamboat back up the Sacramento River to Old Sacramento.

Deserted on a chilly Spring day, but I found the sea colours quite spectacular!

before you ask, I have NO idea why the sea in this small area is that wonderful milky colour... I guess something to do with sunshine and algae reacting together, but who knows?! It doesn't really matter...

Spider Rock is easily the most photographed part of Arizona's Canyon de Chelly. It's quite the sight at sunset! I captured this shot as the last light of the day cast a long shadow onto the adjacent canyon wall.

Located adjacent to Halong Bay, Lan Ha Bay is a peaceful bay in Cat Ba Islands system. Lan Ha Bay has about 400 large and small islands covered with green trees and vegetation. Limestone also makes up a large portion for the small islets in the bay. Nature is peaceful on the island. There are many calm water area suitable for swimming and kayaking around Sen Islet, Cu islet, Monkey islet. Stalactite caves such as Ham Rong, Do Cung or beaches at Tung Bear Cave, Cat Dua beach are some of other natural attraction in the area.

Lan Ha Bay has 139 beautiful and clean beaches with white sand. Gentle waves and calm sea make this a perfect place for swimming. Underneath the blue water, colorful coral reefs area such as Van Boi, Van Ha is worth a diving adventure.

A 14th century church adjacent to Ripley Castle ,the home of Sir Thomas Ingilby in a village between Harrogate and Ripon. Sometime around the year 1395 Sir Thomas Ingilby of Ripley Castle, near Harrogate, built a church opposite his castle to replace an earlier chapel half a mile to the south that was suffering from subsidence. The chapel's condition had become so desperate that it became known as the 'Sinking Chapel'.

Sir Thomas reused carved stones from the earlier chapel and created a very simple building with a nave, north aisle, chancel, a two-storey chantry, and a stumpy west tower. Within a few decades, a south aisle and north chapel were added along with a small chantry. The church remained unaltered until 1567 when Sir William Ingilby (1518-1578) had the tower heightened. He gave the tower its distinctive external turret stair and added a clerestory to the nave. Inside the church the Ingilby Chapel thought to date from before 1547 with fine pews carved for the Ingilby family. On the east wall are bullet holes where Royalist prisoners were shot by Cromwell's men during the civil war

Against the exterior of the south wall are gravestones salvaged from the Sinking Chapel. With the gravestones is a stone coffin now used as a flower bed. The churchyard has a Weeping Cross and is a unique survivor of many such crosses in England.
